Hi Lisa!

I'm glad you were a good girl. I was gonna call you in that space I had between grocery shopping and church yesterday, except that things took way longer than they should have and there was no space.

Isn't it amazing how that space never stays put if you have something planned for it? But if you have nothing planned to do it will actually grow? I actually had a lot less time in there than I had things to do. It helped that The Princess Bride was on on the first night I was there.

Personally I always wanted a bionic fingernail. Lindsay Wagner did a whole lot of cool stuff with that fingernail.

I want to be able to control electricity, especially the current in loud obnoious cars with their radios blaring, no muffler, tailgaitors, policemen following me, cars the refuse to start, people's cars of whom should visit longer, the hair on women acting catty, static charge on guys who need to give me more space, tiny "zaps" to misbehaving children sitting across the room or standing on stage or who are supposed to be in prayer,... You know, that kind of thing.

RE: FOT in NY

Hello ladies,

Jerry and I have been going round and round all week about august.

Situation- #1 Uncle Sam has added that 3rd week back in . #2 Gas is now over 4.00 a gallon too. that is twice what it was the last time we made the trip north.

He knew how much the girls and I really wanted to go north so he put it to all 3 of us and we cannot see a way to make it happen. He suggested that we attempt another plan for when he gets back and take more time to go north and see friends then.

We are sad about it all but at peace with the decision that has been made.

Sorry to disappoint-

~e

SOrry to miss you Ezri

WElcome back Lisa

CLothes: My kids are all different
DD1: darker colors. Likes purple if it's dark and burgendy and black. Doesn't care about brand names. Happiest in jeans and a t-shirt
DD2: light and bright. Loves pink. Having to wear plain old blue jeans with no embellishments is a tragedy. Would probably happily wear a frilly dress every day except that she likes to play hard too so we go for pretty jeans and such as much as possible. Brand names aren't important to her either
DS: Doesn't really care too much. He does like to look nice though and will gladly wear a polo top or more casual button down top all day on Sunday. Loves to wear a suit and tie

I got my evaluations done today. Now I just have to write up my plans for next year and get it all turned in on Monday. FOrtunately DD2's next year looks a lot like DD1's this year.

I went to a picnic/planning meeting at the park today for our homeschool group. My whole face hurts. I'm wondering if one can have sunburt eyeballs. My neighbor, the neighbor's daughter, my son, my daughter, my other daughter have all mentioned that my face is burnt. Uh, yeah, well I thought that awful sensation was from something. MM got sunburt shoulders and I'm quite concerned about it. They look terrible. Poor thing. She had on sunblock, but it wasn't enough.

My neighbor is going to homeschool this year. They have a nine year old daughter who they want to take out of school, but they could see no way to do that. Over the last few weeks, I have been praying about helping those who cannot homeschool and how I could get involved. I thought this had something to do with the school our church wants to build, but then my neighbors told me how they have been praying about what to do about school for their daughter. They said there was no way they could afford private school, but they must have a way to get her out of the public school. It was then that the lightening bolt hit me. That night I had a dream about teaching their daughter. I spoke to my husband, my mother and the children. They all agreed that it would be a good idea, so I told my neighbor that if they wanted to homeschool, I would teach their daughter along side Mr. Manly, as long as they paid for all of her books and supplies. They were thrilled and said that would answer their prayers.

So now I will have four children next year, plus my mother is doing some babysitting for my brother's daughter, so we will have up to five kids here at once. My niece is 14 months old.

I don't think I've lost my mind to add another child to this mix. I realize that Mr. Manly has been extremely difficult, but he has made amazing progress in the last few months. His attitude is improving. Everything is improving. And all this time I have worried about how behind he is; well this neighbor girl is a grade ahead of Mr. Manly and was passsed on to the next grade in school. She is going into fourth grade. Mr. Manly is going in third grade. They are the same in reading, math and everything. At least I know that he wouldn't have been better off academically in school. He would have gone to the same school, which is one of the best schools in our district. So all my headaches and worry over him being "behind" really have been for nothing. He is actually doing just fine.

It is interesting how the Lord has moved in the situation and how we are going to have another student this year. There family is very excited. I sat down at the computer, with the mother, this afternoon and she bought all the curriculum and stuff she will be needing for her daughter to step right in where Mr. Manly is. It is amazing to me that they are at the exact same place academically and it should be a seamless transition to add her. I think it will actually help Mr. Manly, as he is a very social person and doesn't like sitting by himself while I work with one of his sisters. This way Mr. Manly and NG (neighbor girl) will be sitting at the table together working on the same stuff. Even if one of them passes the other in math, it won't be a big deal.

I know that Shadowspring has done this, but those kids moved in with her. Has anyone else done something like this? I read the law and this is perfectly legal. Her parents still have complete control over what she is doing, they will be going over her work with her at home, they will do any grading (if they want to grade), they will keep all her records and will handle the testing. Basically I'm a tutor and a babysitter. They came to the planning meeting for our homeschool group and joined up. I'm really happy for them. They do not want their daughter to stay in the school system here. It is not a place for Christian children and they know it. They just didn't know how the Lord was going to move. It's really cool that the Lord promoted me weeks ago and now it's so clear.

I haven't done it, but I would. I told my SIL I would gladly hs my niece if they want her at home. SIL is in nursing school, so it would really be too much for her. Like you said, her parents are still in charge of her education...you're really a tutor and babysitter.

I'm glad you could help this family in this way and hope it is a blessing to both families.

A long time ago my SIL asked me to homeschool my nephew. I told her to deal with her discipline problem and I would be happy to do it. Funny thing, but she never brought it up again. I would have done it if I thought my nephew would listen to me, but I thought it was unlikely. I thought it even more unlikely that he would listen to her and actually get his work done. At the time they lived about an hour from me, so she would have run him up a couple times a week and the rest of the week would have been homework. I just couldn't see it happening. I'm glad you'll be able to bless this family, Cynthia.

I'm really glad too. They live right next door to us, but are in the process of buying a home. They are renters. The house they are buying is two door down from us, the other direction. They did not want to leave the neighborhood, because the Lord has placed us in their lives to mentor and help them. I just never thought it would be to this extent, but it is really exciting to be able to do something this major to really step up to the plate and do this. NG is over at our house almost every day as it is. She is a nice little girl who gets along very well with my children. She is respectful towards me and we like each other. She is excited about me tutoring her. That makes me very happy. She will be easy to teach, because she already knows we love her and want her around and she likes to be here. She had wished she could be homeschooled like my children and now she is getting her wish.

I know some of you don't venture out of this area much, so wanted to update you on the hysterectomy news. (Thread HERE.) We were planning on the surgery being in January, but my doctor now wants to do it in early November, in hopes of being able to do it laproscopically. Timing-wise, this will be better for us in some ways and harder in others. Better because the furnace will not be such an issue in November as it would be in January and as long as someone can come take Hannah and Levi if I need them to, I should not need anyone here with me. Worse because Brian's time off starts over December 15th, so he won't have his extra week he gets next year yet, which we were planning on using for this. But my step-MIL is taking off a week in Sept to help after the baby is born, so my mom is now planning on saving her time off for November. It'll all work out...

Wow, Donna. That seems like a big change. Why is he in such a hurry? And I have a question which I’m sure is naïve, but I’m going to ask it anyway. Could they do a c-section and a hysterectomy right after? I know that would require a different method and everything, but wouldn’t it be easier to do it all at once or would it be worse? Just asking.

Cynthia, I hate to tell you this, but in this state, it is not legal for you to be the primary teacher of another family's child unless you are a certified teacher or working in a school. The homeschool law states that the parent has to be the primary teacher.

I am exhausted. But I can now beat you up with tsai. So be nice to me.

I forget how old Mr. Manly is...but if this girl won't be 8 until the school year is over, then you are off the hook for the year. That might be a nice loophole. But only a short one.

It sounds to me like the parents still are the primary teachers. They bought the curriculum, will go over it with their daughter at home, grade, etc. The child will come to Cynthia's house while her parents are working - that's babysitting - and will bring her school work with her. Admittedly it's a little grey, but I think a good case can be made that Cynthia is just helping like any other babysitter might help with homework.

If you belong to HSLDA, you could ask them.

Yes, I have, for a year, than a year off, than two more years, I home
schooled two children for a single mom. The second two years, the boy had lukemia. In California the law is that someone else can be involved in homeschooling your kids up to half the time, so the first year I taught, I had the kids M-W-F, and she did stuff with them the other 3 days, and I taught at "my" (my parents') house(she was a cleaning lady at the time, so had a flexible schedule), the other two years, she had a full time job at a company, and I taught her kids M-F mornings at her house, and then she did stuff with them on evenings and weekends. It was a blessing, but the boy died . However, the girl, and I, who this fall is starting a nursing program at the community college, still have a relationship. In fact, she comes for coffee on Friday afternoons.

Ellie - so good to "see" you back!!

Cynthia - how wonderful that you can bless your neighbors! I would do that to if the situation was like yours! I'll be praying that it all goes smoothly & benefits everyone!

Donna - thanks for sharing the other thread for those of us who don't venture over there! It sounds like you are at peace with your decision. I'll be lifting you & your family up in prayer!

We have no place to go today!!!! Not even VBS tonight!! But we have plenty to do around here. Ds should have left from the place in Mexico this morning. They should arrive in TX tonight. Prayer is appreciated!

My mom used to do that when we were really little. But I believe Jenny is right--HSLDA won't cover you if you are teaching other children besides your own, because then it's a private school and not a homeschool anymore.
