Hi everyone! I had plans to take a friend out this afternoon but it didn't work out so I'm sitting at one of my favourite places, relaxing with a cup of Earl Grey (hot). It's a beautiful day outside and there are tables there on the other side of my window but I'm inside anyway. I don't feel so well. Ginny, I like your dad's attitude. My mom had a friend, a man who wanted to marry her, who was dying of cancer. He too refused treatment. It wasn't until the very end that you could tell he wasn't well. He was a fun guy, living life to the fullest like your dad. Your parents have been married over 60 years. Wow! So cool! That is a huge achievement. quote:
Maggie, I didn't know your DH was taking dancing . . . I'd like to see that! These lessons are short term, for a specific performance this Thursday. There will be a fair bit of media coverage, I'm thinking, so I'll send you a URL when I've got one. Cows? Sheesh! I like cows but not in my back yard. Mind you, even a couple of cows would find themselves crowded in my backyard. Barb, I wonder if my dh would be willing to try creating something like that for our grandchildren once we have some. His skills with tools is limited but kids wouldn't care if it didn't look perfect, so long as it was safe. I'm curious about your camp meeting. Would you be interested in telling us a bit about it? When I was a kid (40 years ago or so), camp meeting was held once a year in one of our national parks. Churches from across two provinces gathered for a weekend (sometimes longer) on lakeside property we leased from the government. I loved going because not only did I get to see friends from other places but also because the place was such a cool place to be. Nearly everything was done with tents--large tents. A small town of large, white, army-style tents, each large enough to hold four bunk beds was set up in neat rows. I loved watching these being erected and then a truck would drive up and down the rows, first with various-sized metal beds as pre-ordered for each family, and then with mattresses. The mattress run was a lot of fun and we kids could go along for the ride, sitting high on the top. I think my favourite thing, however, was watching the Book and Bible tent being raised. Huge wooden stakes were pounded into the ground by two men wielding sledge hammers in a rythmical beat. The centre of the tent was held up by two large poles, like telephone poles and a large group of men was required to pull on the ropes that raised the tent and the poles together. I loved the products the Book and Bible tent sold: theology books, stories of missionaries, and yummy foods we couldn't buy anywhere else. The meeting hall was a permanent structure built by my grandfather. The floor was covered with wood shavings and we sat on narrow benches, some of which had no backs. The shavings were fun to move around with the toes when meetings got boring. BUt they seldom were because there were tents as large as the book tent where classes for kids were held. Though we had a large clearing for our camp, we were surrounded by forest and going on hikes was a lot of fun. So were the water activities. The lake was icy cold and the bottom was covered with large, smooth rocks instead of sand but we didn't care. Even the bloodsuckers lurking near the dock didn't keep us away. Camp meeting was fun. I miss it.
