I did read that turning the incline up to 1% is a good idea to mimic the effect of running on a "real" road, so I'll do that next time too. I'm a little stiff today, but not too bad.

I can't do a treadmill between about 3.5 and 5.5. It's too fast for me to walk and too slow for me to run. So I either have to walk about 3mph or run 5.5 or more (which I can't do for long). Anything in between that and I feel like I'm going to fall off!

My warmup speed is 3mph, walking is 3.5, and jogging is 5. I've attempted 5.5 or 6, but that's MY speed where I feel like I'm going to fly off the end. Hillary- yesterday was my first day "on the loop", at least as far as exercise. The idea is to get ON, and stay there. You can do it!

Ya'lls speeds on the treadmill are great. I'm still a long way from that. I start walking at 2.5 for five minutes & then walk at 3.0 for the next 35 minutes & slow down to 2.5 for 5 more minutes. I occasionally bump up to 3.3 for about 5-7 minutes sometime during the 35 minutes. I try 3.5 but can't hold it for long (maybe 3 minutes). I doubt I'll ever do running. Not sure that my knees will ever accept that at my point in life (I turn 47 next month). The important thing is that I'm walking 2 miles every day. I hope sometime in the next 20 pounds I lose I'll do two days of pilates a week. I used to be in a class for circuit training & the instructor was my son's age. It was just a bit too much jumping for this old gal. In the last several months she started a pilates class on alternating days. I think this will be good for me, but I just don't want to start it too soon & then wind up quitting. Just being consistent on treadmill now is a huge milestone for me. I'm managing a one-two pound weight loss per week. kd

I walked for 20 minutes this morning. I was wanting 30, but I got up a little later than I planned. I did begin jogging a couple of times, not sure how long I kept it up, but it really showed me how OUT OF SHAPE I am. Wow. Anyway, it was good, it was fun...I feel better today... In the loop now...gotta stay there! I have also been watching what I eat. I shared a couple of eggs and one piece of toast with my dd this morning...so I'm not sure of my intake exactly, but it wasn't a lot...and it was reasonably good for me... :)

ORIGINAL: christsstar I must have a long stride. I walk about 4-4.5 mph, and run between 5.5 and 7, depending on how limber I'm feeling. I run better on a treadmill than on the street. I was told the other day that I run straight up and down. I blamed it on trying to keep my sunglasses on, but when I tried to lean forward a bit, I was able to run a bit faster. But with the c25k, I'm trying to keep the tempo set by the music. Wow, that seems fast to me. But if I remember right, you're taller than I am, so I guess it makes sense. I'm about 5'2" with proportionally short legs. I'd love to have someone critique my running style- I've been told all my life that I walk like a duck, but never gotten anyone to tell me exactly what they mean by that. Well DH and I both got more sore as yesterday went on, and my hips are definitely feeling it today, so we may wait until tomorrow to go again.

I think I walk an average of 4 mph, even when not on the treadmill.

My speed on the treadmill is 4.8-5.2 right now. I have some 6.0 1 min intervals in there. I am about to move my speed up when i run tonight, as this was easy for me the last time I ran. I am working toward a 10 min mile, which is 6.0. I beleive that you have to have a 9 min mile before you are considered running. Up to that, you are only jogging. I have short legs, so I think running would be at a slower speed than that!

Yeah, 5.0 feels like a jog to me, and works out to a 12 minute mile. I think trying to do a 9 minute mile on a treadmill would leave me practically sprinting with how short my legs are!

Ladies, I'm so frustrated today. I really just want to find a corner somewhere and cry. I'm up several pounds this morning at weigh-in. I'd like to say this is some mystery and I have NO idea how it happened, but I know. I've been eating horribly. Food is flat out an addiction for me. I use it to stuff down emotions I don't want to deal with, to prolong emotions that I enjoy, to self-medicate, to... to... well, to anything. I really need help with this. I don't have time to join Celebrate Recovery or Overeaters Anonymous... I'm lucky to have time to do laundry each week. Can anyone recommend a Bible Study or book that I could do when I do have time. And pray for me, please. I just want to give up, but I can't. My mom has weight problems and I've always sworn I wouldn't, but here I sit, weighing more than her now. My biggest concern is developing diabetes like she has. --Kat

(((Kat))) I'm so sorry. I know what you mean about food though. I LOVE food, the more the better. I do pretty well in the weekdays, but weekends are always a bust. I can't control it, especially when it's good food. And to make things worse, everyone in my family is a good cook...my mom's family are all good in the kitchen, and my MIL is a great baker... Anyway, right now, I'm off to make some healthy snacks for camping this weekend. It's supposed to be a rainy weekend, so lots of time for sitting around eating! Are you interested in a book about eating styles? That's what I got last week, and I've worn it out already. He talks about how to eat healthier, but taking regular food and making it healthier. I love this way of eating, I can eat lots of food, so I don't feel like I'm starving, it's just eating the right foods in the right combination at the right times. Or are you looking for a Bible study type thing?

My sister has agreed to do it with me because she suffers from a lot of the same struggles. --Kat

I gotta back on the wagon when I go grocery shopping on sat or sunday. Yuck. I am going to try to go to spin twice a week, I am only going to run maybe twice a week. I don't know if I have the right shoes or something because I keep getting aches from it.

My sister has agreed to do it with me because she suffers from a lot of the same struggles. --Kat I know exactly where you are. I'm the same way and it all came to a head after my mom died - well about three years of binge/constant eating after my mom died. I started to catch myself consciously going straight to the fridge when I got upset or sad. It went beyond some mindless reaction I was having to a conscious decision like taking a Tylenol or something. That's what got my attention. One day I just thought, "WHAT am I doing to myself?!?!" For me, even now, I pretty much just have to keep the junk away from me or I'll be all over it. As a matter of fact (let's be real), I just had a giant bowl of corn pops that I swore I wouldn't touch today! It's to that point now because there's truly nothing else bad in my house so I'm having trouble with temptation from the kids' cereal. Frustrating? Yes! Insurmountable? No! It's going to boil down to avoidance - just cut that stuff out of your life so that, in weakness, it wont be there to reach for. This might take having a serious sit down with dh and telling the kids "too bad" because they don't need it either! Eventually, after a while of just avoiding it at all costs and shutting bad food out of your life, it'll gradually become less a part of your life. That wont solve every temptation, for sure. But when you get a handle on it, it does make it easier and makes you stronger. And there will still be an element of sheer willpower involved. And there will be weak moments (like me kicking myself over the corn pops) but you'll learn to just pick up from there and get back on track instead of letting that destroy the rest of your day. It's a process. And it ain't easy. But I totally understand. Pray about it for sure. Maybe read through the Bible for help on temptation. But there's not a magical Bible study or book that's going to bypass what you have to do to get it under control and keep it under control.

I still keep gaining, so I am going to do low carb for the next month. I start on Sunday, as Sat we have dinner with some friends. I am going to do the low carb until I go camping in 4 weeks. That will be my time off. :) But I am so active camping, that I lose weight there too. It is very hard though. I do so well all day, then blow it every night. So I am going to take the snacks out of the house. If it is not there, then I won't blow it. My other thing is, why am I so hungry all the time when I eat healthy. I am hungry all the time. I eat my salad, I am starving almost as soon as I am done. But if I have some carbs, I feel fuller.

Not ALL carbs are bad!!! Go for the ones that are more fiber...or are made from whole grain and you'll have more success (at least that's been my experience). Eating bad carbs (ie: sugar and white flour items) tend to make me hungrier. Cereal is one food that no matter how much I eat of it...I'm still starving and then will overeat later. So I rarely eat it! I completed Week 4 of the Couch to 5K today. So, I don't think I'm doing too bad with it. Sandy and Ryanne...have fun starting it next week. Stacy, how is week 1 going for you? Kat and Yolanda, aren't you doing the C25K as well? Hope y'all are able to keep on track with it. Down a couple of pounds...we'll see if it stays that way. I guess I just tend to see a LOT of fluctuation there....I know...I need to measure....that requires buying a measuring device though...so will probably do that. Also, I want to get a pedometer. Do you ladies have a good recommendation for one?

Unfortunately, I've never found a pedometer that actually counted my steps accurately. Maybe it has something to do with the way I walk? I think I have one I picked up for free that I can put in an envelope and mail to you. I'll hope someone else has a suggestion for you. I'm still on day 1 of the c25K. I think the plan is to go and work out tonight, which will be my day 2. We were going to go yesterday, but the stiffness from Tuesday's workout seemed to kick in a day late and DH and I were both sore yesterday.

Here is an example of what I am eating: Kashi Cereal or Rasin Bran Yougart (fiber one) Salad (lettuce, spinich, brocoli, kidney beans, olives, carrots, cabbage, tomato, cheese and salsa) and it is a good size salad. Something else. 1/2 sandwich or lean cuisine Fruit - 2 peices necterine or apricots dinner - meat & veggies - no carbs or hardly any. My work is doing a 5K. It is the day I am leaving for camping at lunch. It is July 30th at 12noon. What are these people thinking? I live in CA. It is going to be HOT HOT HOT! I want to do it, but I am leaving early that day for camping, so taking time out to run might not work out. Plus, it is going to be HOT HOT HOT!
