I need things that are easy to pack and can be eaten while driving, but I'm sick of granola bars and wraps. I take a big bag cooler with me just about everywhere I go. I rarely actually eat while I'm driving but I do eat every three hours and running home for all those meals, obviously isn't always an option. My on-the-go meals most often are protein shakes. That I guess I do quite often while driving. I also take cottage cheese and pineapple as that's pretty easy - doesn't require heating...I've forgotten to pack a spoon a few times and that really stinks! The planning ahead can be a pain, I know. But once you get into a routine with it, it's not so bad. I've finally kicked a bad habit of turning to protein bars 2 or 3 times a day (Zone, Slimfast, or the higher octane protein versions found in the health/diet food section). Haven't had one in months just because real food is a much better option and I was really just being lazy. But, in a real pinch, they're better than granola bars or junk!

I need mp3's. Here is a link to c25K links. If you scroll down there is a set of mp3's with Christian Indie bands and the timings for when to walk and when to run. I think my goal is to start this next week.

Ok, here is me NOW - 35 weeks pregnant and 189 lbs. HERE I was just before getting pregnant - or maybe a couple days pregnant 155 lbs, 8 months after having Judah. HERE I was when we got married. 118 lbs, no muscle to be seen on my body. I am not sure what I would like to strive for body-wise after I have this baby. My body has never been very strong, so I don't know what a good fit, muscular weight would be for me, so I am not striving for a number on a scale. I am a little bit scared about starting to lose weight after the baby comes ... I think it's going to be really hard to do, and I don't want to give in to discouragement. My goal right now is to start working out hard core in November. Between July and November I am going to do walking with the goal of being able to run by November. (I'll also do biking and other cardio, but in moderation and as I feel like it.) I will also do crunches and the plank to strengthen my core (again, adding a few other exercises, but those two I know I can do well and efficiently, and it helps me to plan to do stuff I *know* I can do.) And then I'll also work on pull ups with my goal being to be able to complete a full pull up properly by November. (And along with pull ups I will do other back strengthening exercises.) Once I get to November I should be able to run, have a stronger core, stronger back and be able to do at least 1 pull up. I will then set out new goals and a plan to make those goals work.

The problem is that I literally need things that I can eat with one hand on the steering wheel (no safety lectures please ). Most of my food is eaten while driving between appointments. That lets out veggies and dip, cottage cheese (or anything else that could be messy). Some fruits work, but don't fill me up enough for the entire day. Lately I've been doing Ritz crackers with lunch meat (sort of homemade Lunchables), but the crackers get soggy since I put them together in the morning.

I'm not sure I could handle the thought of drinking cottage cheese- I mostly only like it with applesauce, and I think that would be a little high on the potentially messy scale. I've considered cucumbers, and celery...I'm a bit too picky about other veggies . For a while I was eating lots of tortilla wraps with lunch meat and lettuce in them, but I'm tired of them now, and tuna/egg salad/pbj is too messy (I've tried it). So far my best bet is the lunch meat and crackers...some fruits (ones that aren't too juicy/drippy/strong-smelling). I've also attempted trail mix, although that gets a bit messy just from dropping crumbs. I'm still open to ideas- I've been wrestling with this for the past year and a half, and not come up with much. I think most of my coworkers just eat fast food.

Sliced cheddar cheese, go-gurts (freeze them and they'll be just the right temp when you want to eat them), pretzels, sliced apples (just put a sprinkle of lemon or OJ in with them so they don't brown)... Could you put a bit of lowfat dip in a small cup that fits in the cup holder? Then you could still dip veggies?

The amount of time it would take you to drive through a fast food line should give you enough time to eat a heavy salad you've packed for yourself. You could add nuts, meats, your favorite veggies, eggs, cheese and a variety of other things to your salad, and then take 5 minutes to eat it. Cheaper and healthier than fast food, and yet probably about the same amount of time it would take you to drive through a fast food line.

The go-gurts idea could be interesting...I wonder if there's a way I could sort of make my own without having to buy them individually packaged, so I could use yogurt that I like? I've done apples and pretzels- the pretzels are particularly good in the summer b/c of the salt. The trick is getting enough of something, or enough variety, to hold me over for an entire work day (6-8 hours) My cup holders are nearly useless for holding anything- everything just tips over. Jessica- good point, but unfortunately, I flat just don't like salad, unless its taco salad, and that doesn't travel or re-eat well. I'll have to think more about that, though. Whether I have 5 minutes extra somewhere depends on the day, and I can't always predict it ahead of time- there are days I eat 3-4 granola bars or packages of crackers all while driving, and days I have time to stop for 1/2 hour to eat- although eating in a hot car is decidedly not appetizing, and I'm not sure a restaurant would look kindly on my walking in with my own food. I'm getting some good new ideas, and adding to my grocery list, so if you have any more, feel free to toss 'em at me!

ORIGINAL: TammyIsBlessed Starting weight (Feb 8 - 2 weeks after baby#4): 145 Goal weight: 120 Total pounds to lose: 25 Current weight: 132 Pounds lost: 13!! Pounds left to lose: 12 - just over half way there! I'm a little confused with the way my body's been losing weight this time. I've lost weight very slowly at first - using Body for Life exercise program and just trying to eat well. Then after a couple days of bad eating I'd lose a pound. During our Disney vacation (where I definitely didn't eat well, but did walk a fair amount) I lost 2 pounds. Then after wisdom tooth surgery I hardly ate anything and lost nothing. I have not resumed exercising since then and suddenly lost another 3 pounds last week. My only guess is that I'm actually undereating causing my metabolism to slow down which slows down the weight loss. I don't feel like I'm undereating though, so I'm a little nervous to eat more in case I start gaining weight! Are you following the womens guide for what to eat from Body For Life For Women? It was no where near enough food *for me* when I was following it. I tried following it to a T - I had everything in correct portion sizes, in individual containers, each grouped in their own category in the fridge. I was always hungry, so decided to stop eating the portions they suggested and just eating for my body. Things got much better I have always eaten a lot. I can out eat Paul almost any day. The trick is to just eat healthy stuff Paul has a good system he has been doing for a year or two now, no matter what other "diet" he is following (right now it being Warrior Diet.) Anyways, he basically has one junk day a week. He's very careful about eating no junk 6 days a week - and then the 7th day he eats whatever he wants in whatever amount he wants to. It's been interesting to see that he binges less and less on junk on his junk days! According to the link CSL7037 gave, I have a daily expenditure of 2185 calories per day. That doesn't include calories necessary for nursing though - which I think is 500? So that's 2685 per day. I really don't think I'm eating 2685 calories per day! I'm not following the Body for Life eating guide at all. Just trying to choose healthy foods and eat till I'm satisfied, not stuffed. I do eat a lot. I sometimes eat as much as Nathan even though he works in construction all day! In the summertime, he actually eats even less as the heat makes him less hungry. I don't seem to have that problem. I think I mentioned on the general Weight Loss thread that I tried doing phase 1 of the South Beach diet for 3 days and that totally did not work. It's virtually no carbs. I made sure to try to eat a lot otherwise, but it obviously was not enough, especially with nursing. During the middle of the 2nd night of that I woke up absolutely starving, sweating and dizzy. I got up and tried eating cheese and peanuts first, which didn't help a thing. So I finally had one mini chocolate egg and some crackers and then I felt better. So, that bombed.

I agree that you could pack real food and pull over long enough to eat it in less time than going through a drive through. If you can't build in a 5 minute cushion between appointments, you need to decide if you're willing to let this job kill you! Even on my crazy eating schedule - every three hours (which is how we need to eat to be healthy and to lose weight), you shouldn't need to take that 5 minute break more than twice - three times max anyway. Like I said, one could be a protein shake (driving) and then three hours later, pull over and eat a chicken breast with an apple. Most of what you're talking about having in the car isn't even real food. Your poor body can't keep that up and keep working for you. quote:

I had to think about this more. And I'm certainly no expert! But I'm assuming you got 2185 from the BMR Formula: BMR = 655 + [9.6 x (pounds/2.2)]+[1.7 x (2.54 x inches)]-(4.7 x age) I plugged in a weight of 135, height of 5'6", age of 30 (just trying to assume or average height and age) and got 1371. I really think, to account for that extra 500 calories/day they say is expended nursing, it would put you in a "High" activity level (at the very most) which would say to multiply that BMR by 1.8. That is more like an extra 1000 calories cushiion and brings it to 2468. It's from that, that you'd subtract 20% to get a goal of 1974/day. Does that sound better?

I was also wondering about those who are married, does your husband help or hinder your health and fitness goals? And how does he do that? He hinders it, though he wouldn't think he does. He is completely satisfied with me as I am, which IS a good thing, but when *I* am not satisfied and I need his help with the kids in order to be able to exercise alone, so if he's not on board...then I'm stuck. That's why I thought of hiring the teen down the road. Her parents wouldn't have let her do it before next year anyway...she will be 14 then, and 3 little ones is a lot, even for an hour. I've worked with her in the nursery though and know she will be great! One thing I know I will need to change is drinking more water and if I drink soda, making it diet. I don't like diet soda, but I'm going to have to get over it if I want to still have soda. I don't drink much now...probably 3 20 oz of Pepsi a week, but I want to cut it all out.

Is anyone here willing to be my workout accountability partner? As I've shared before, the food issue is somewhat out of my control until I've got my own place again, but I can and should be exercising. I REALLY want to do the C25K program. I used to run cross country and LOVED it but haven't in years. Let's do it. I need a partner too.

My husband is one of those freaks of nature who can eat a bazillion calories a day and not gain weight. Mine too. Except both of his parents have diabetes and he has signs of pre-diabetes, so I at least try to monitor the quantities of junk he puts in his body. We all started eating much healthier 3 years ago when he started having signs.

ORIGINAL: paulsbride I can tell you that if you faithfully exercise daily junk food will seem less and less appealing - it may take a few weeks until your body starts to feel the "healthy high" from exercise, but if you are carving out time every day even just to walk for 30 minutes - 1 hour you will eventually want to start fueling your body differently on your own accord. For me, when I get into a groove, eating well becomes easy. But when I'm surrounded by junk food it's nearly impossible. Kat, you could try some realistic goals to limit the junk you let yourself have while you can't really control it being in your vicinity. Maybe plan some little rewards for youself when you manage to resist - go 1 week without it and go get a pedicure!! Just a thought. quote:
ORIGINAL: paulsbride More Questions! Have any of you ladies found any magazines to be useful? I was also wondering about those who are married, does your husband help or hinder your health and fitness goals? And how does he do that? I get magazines sometimes for the photos for motivation (bodybuilding magazines, the "fitness" mags irk me). But most of the stuff in them, workout and food advice, I find to be 99% fluff. And my dh either really helps or really hurts. He gets on kicks, like now, where's he's really hard core. That's when I crank it up a notch and take advantage of the zero tolerance for junk food policy that he enforces and I'm able to make some progress. But then he'll go off the wagon, because he an afford to (I can't!) and life gets difficult for me - Haagen Das and Domnoe's!! Life is definitely easier when we're on the same page. It actually becomes a bit of a competition and we're able to push each other - sometimes too much. Right now he's working with "Mr. Florida" and I'm trying to prove a point that I can find and learn what I need to do on my own and don't need someone telling me what to eat when and what to lift when. It's my personality. He can take Mr. Florida's plan and follow it mindlessly to a T. I can't do that. If someone wants to teach me what to do and why, then I'll take it from there. So I've kinda got something to prove right now which has been fun. Fitness is something dh and I share an interest (obsession?) in but we approach so entirely differently that we don't actually do much of it together. Weird, I know.
