Have any of you ladies found any magazines to be useful?

Sort of. I stumbled upon Women's Health one day while getting my nails done. There was a great yoga routine in it. So I found it online and have perused their workout articles when they are put up. They have some good ideas, but mostly it's a fluff magazine. It has a lot of sex topics in it, so I have to skip all those. But since I look at the articles online, it's not sitting around the house.

I really like the workout ideas they have. Moving out of my apartment I'm losing my workout facilities, so I might think about some of their non-traditional things.

Muscle and Fitness Hers and Oxygen are the more hard core fitness magazines. Oxygen I think is aimed at bodybuilders and heavy lifters.

Shape and Fitness are really bad. They are ok for a beginner but they repeat the same things over and over. They airbrush the covers like crazy and have the ads for plastic surgery and diet pills in them.

Women's Health is kind of in the middle. They show some more realistic fitness models.

Runners world is good too, if you are into running.

Oh, I missed this one. I just subscribed to Women's Health which I really like, especially since they had an article about NOT dieting and instead making healthy lifestyle changes. I have yet to see a diet plan in their magazine although there are some workout plans and this month's edition has some great recipes for Quinoa and Bulgar.

It's really hard for me to find those flavored water packets since I don't "do" artificial sweeteners but there is a brand that has "True Lemon and True Orange" that are good in water.

Is it the stuff called "True Lemon" ? There are printable coupons online that you can print to get I think $1 off. I have a few coupons printed, but haven't yet bought the stuff.

I've used that before...its pretty good. A squirt from a bottle of lemon juice will do the trick too.

Jessica- I like that chickpeas idea! I love hummus, so I'm thinking chickpeas with lemon juice and salt. I can picture popping those into my mouth a few at a time and not making too much of a mess, assuming the container doesn't tip over.
Most of what I was used to eating for lunch is reheated leftovers, but I have no way to reheat anything. I did do the tortillas with lunch meat and lettuce for a little while, but I simply got tired of them, and tuna or egg salad is too messy to put inside.
Should I start the "what can I eat in the car" as a separate topic in H&G? I don't want to feel like I'm taking over here.

No fast food today!

I think starting another thread about "what healthy foods you can eat in the car" would be a good idea. It's not that I think it doesn't belong in this thread or mind seeing it discussed here... I think you would get a different crowd to give you more ideas.

Ok. I'm having a problem going from the theory of doing 50/25/25 to figuring out what to eat.

I'm aiming for 1400 calories/day which translates into 175g/88g/39g. If you should only eat 25 grams of protein/meal, that gives me 7 meals/day at approx 25g/12.5g/5.5. What would meals like that look like? All of the lean proteins I currently have in my fridge aren't adding up to this. FYI, I can't have too much milk product due to mucous production and singing/vocal health not being compatable and I don't like any fish that isn't 100% fresh, including all canned varieties. I like most anything else.

Am I wrong about not eating more than 25g of protein at one meal? I'd prefer to eat 5-x/day instead of 7x.
I'm really concerned about being hungry enough to eat every 2.25 hours, especially with all that protein. I mean, if it was all fruit and veggies I could eat all day and still be hungry!

Six meals/day is ideal. Women can sometimes get away with five. I just woofed (more like choked) down my 194th gram of protein for the day. In six meals, that was just over 30grams. Dh is sticking religiously right now to a plan put together for him by "Mr. Florida" and he's getting about 270g of protein every day in 7 meals. It's unreal. He grills chicken 10lbs at a time!

I really only eat meat 2-3x/day. Here's my plan on a "moderate" day (1500 calories, 188g protein, 115g carbs, and 32g fat), if it gives you any ideas....

M1: 1/2 svg pancakes (made from 1 egg white, 2T oats, 1T cottage cheese), 1 scoop protein w/ 1/2 c milk
M2: 1 scoop protein w/ 1 c skim milk, 6 oz banana or apple
M3: 1c LF Cottage Cheese & 3/4c pineapple
M4 & M5: 32g protein, green veggies
M6: 1 c LF Cottage Cheese and 1/4 c pineapple
or 1 svg protein (w/water) & 1/2 T peanut butter

I have been told I should cut back on the dairy. Cottage cheese is a bit of a staple for me. Just take stuff you like from this list (you'll notice this list doesn't include dairy at all) and plug it into fitday.com or whatever you're using until it comes out to what you need it to be.

While you're devising your plan, if you want to get really crazy technical, one step beyond what you've got here is to "partition" you meals which just means concentrating the carbs in the morning and fats in the evening with the exception of allowing for extra carbs around your workout if that needs to be in the evening - something like...

quote:

Those who train in the morning (preferably around 8:00am) should do the following:

Upon waking: Carb and protein meal/drink
Post-workout, around 9:00am: Carb and protein drink, like Surge
12:30pm: Carb and protein meal
3:30pm: Protein, fat, and green veggies
6:00pm: Protein, fat, and green veggies
9:00pm: Protein, fat, and green veggies

Obviously, not everybody can apply this exact schedule. For those who have to train in the evening (preferably around 5:00 or 6:00pm), the following schedule is appropriate:

Upon waking: Carb and protein meal
10:00am: Carbs, protein, and green veggies
12:30pm: Protein, fat, and green veggies
3:30pm: Protein, fat, and green veggies
Post-workout, around 6:00pm: Carb and protein drink, like Surge
9:00pm: Carb and protein meal

Did that just make your head explode?

I believe there is a limit to how much protein you your body will absorb in a single meal, and it was a little over 30 grams. Maybe 35, I don't remember. Thats when i was trying the body for life.

So 30 grams per meal is good.

Yes, but I'll read it again twice tomorrow and probably get it.

I did understabnd that I can eat more than 25 g of protein at a meal which is one of the things I wanted to hear. I like having my ears tickled.

I've subscribed to both Shape and Fitness. I found that Fitness had a lot more exercise routines and ideas than Shape did.

The lady who owns my gym once told me that too. But I don't buy it. I found this on it by Tom Venuto. No offense to the lady who owns my gym - she's great! But I think I'd go with Venuto.

We'll see how much you like hearing that when you're choking down 5oz of tilapia before you go to bed! Honestly, before too long, eating every 3 hours starts to get to you. When you start eating really clean, it can feel like all you're doing is eating! And I'm still "cutting". I've had a few people tell me I need to do a "bulk" phase soon, which I've never done before. I'm not at all sure I could handle that much more food! With 6 meals/day, I quite often get to this time at night and have to force myself to eat again. I'm just not one of those people who gets hungry at night either, though. But I have to eat within minutes of getting out of bed in the morning or I get downright ugly so maybe that's just me.

If it makes me grouchy, you'll be the first to know Miss Encouraging-Me-To-Eat-All-Day-Long. I already eat clean, but am eating more fat and carbs and less protein.

I did my second run from the C25K last night. It was MUCH better than the first time.

First of all, I had a better starting point, and second, I went in the evening and it wasn't as hot. I was able to run ALL of the intervals, where the other day I could only do half, so I'm much more encouraged this week!

Can somebody ask me on sunday night or monday if I've done my third run??

I'll check up on you, Yolanda!

I'm planning on doing my first C25K workout tonight, so I'd appreciate someone "nagging" me.

Query, I live in Florida... the land of over 90s temps all day, every day! Can I do the C25K on the treadmill? We have one set up in the garage with a big industrial fan pointed at it, so I'm thinking that would be far more doable than getting out in the heat.

I'm sure you can do it on the treadmill, you'll just have to change your speed often. Could you program the two speeds in there so you only have to push one button?
Or is it a manual treadmill?

The first week is 5 mins walking, then intervals of 60 seconds running and 90 seconds walking then 5 min walking cool down. So if you don't mind switching your speeds back and forth (unless you run and walk at the same speed )

I am wondering about continuing this program into the summer, I don't deal with heat well. I started going in the evening, and once summer is in full swing, I might even have to start going after dark. I really don't want to give up on it!

Kat, I would check on you tonight or tomorrow, but we're going away for the weekend and won't be back until sunday. But I'll ask you Sunday when I get back

Do any of you have cardio machines at home that you use? Ideally I'd love to get the Bowflex Treadclimber but it's so expensive. A treadmill might be good. We just don't have any place to put it right now, unless I steal the playroom!

I used to have a bike. I couldn't do it. Even at the gym, the machines are torture for me. I have to be a in a class to stay motivated enough for cardio. I just can't do the same thing mindlessly for 20 minutes+. It's a personality thing.

Space is a problem, though. I'd absolutely lift weights at home and do other things. Dh really wants the mac-daddy bowflex but it's really expensive to and it just takes so much room! Not gonna happen. I could make do with just a little bit of equipment at home and, if I had to, could find the space. But dh needs enormous weights and it's just not feasible.

For us, the cost of gym memberships is well worth it. But I even get bored at the same gym all the time. That's why I teach, so I can get free memberships all over town. They really don't even have to pay me - but I don't tell them that!

Now that I'm moving, I really want to get an eliptical or something. (Tony Little's Gazelle!!!) It's not very smart though right now. I live in Cali and have decent weather all year long to be able to go outside and do something outside. So I should just use the bike that I already have for my cardio. sigh

I'm looking into a gym membership, but it probably won't happen. I have one at work I can use, but it's always full. I can also get a discounted membership to a local gym near work, but it's far from home to be convenient all the time I wonder how often I'd use it.

I've had the munchies all week. This is bad. I need to figure out why and end that habit soon.

I am out of room in my apartment, but a step / bosu is great. A bosu can be used for pushups as well.

i have a gym membership til I own a house then I will slowly build my own home gym.

I bought a mountain bike and have shoes for running and walking so I use those when its nice out.

Do you have a Wii already?

The Wii Fit is about $150 I think, same price as a couple other games I want that would get used just as much. I think I could justify it if it gets used enough in the first few months to be equal to a gym membership. Say a membership is $25/month, I use it every day for 6 months and it's paid for itself. In that time, if other people also use it, it's more than paid for itself.
