For when I preach the Gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel. I Corinthians 9:16

And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to Him to God the Father.

Colossians 3:17 (NASB)

The Lord Almighty has sworn,
"Surely, as I have planned, so it will be,
... and as I have purposed, so it will stand."

To me this means to always remember Jesus in everything you do. Never forget Him or what he means to us.

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love.

Be on your guard against what? Perhaps falsity in religious doctrine. Stand firm in the faith may mean know what you believe, why you believe it, and be able to defend it if necessary. Be men of courage; be strong could mean don't be afraid of defending your beliefs and don't defend them weakly. But most importantly, whatever you do in the defense of your beliefs make sure you do everything in love.

You (Lord Jesus) prepare a table for me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

The version of the Bible I have doesn't have "Lord Jesus" in parenthesis in this verse. I wonder how your version came to add that to Scripture.

Actually, none of the versions of the Bibles that I own have "Lord Jesus" separated with parentheses "()" included in the verse Psalm 23:5. I included the "(Lord Jesus)" words in the one that I posted here on this thread because I wanted to specify to whom the prayer (and sentence) was directed to.

I apologize for any confusion or misrepresentation.

As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

Don't worry, be happy!!

Worry doesn't profit a man anything, so why worry.

Great verse Niki!

Hi Greatdivide!

PopsiLufsJesus -> RE: Bible Verse and Discussion Thread (10/27/2008 1:49:01 AM)

I have to confess that I'm a HUGE worrier and this isn't even the confession thread. I've realized over my 21 or so years of worrying that my worrying changes nothing. My circumstances aren't provoked to change just because I worry about them, but if I give them all to Jesus He knows how to handle them...

This calls for wisdom.
If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man's number.
His number is 666.

I think way too much attention has been given to this verse. What does it mean to calculate the number of the beast. And while 6 is the number of man and its repeated three times, what does it really mean?

Trinity_3persons -> RE: Bible Verse and Discussion Thread (11/5/2008 5:31:34 PM)

And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. He had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on his thorns, and on each head a blasphemous name.....

The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months.

Revelation 13:1&5

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.

Colossians 3:8

Trinity_3persons -> RE: Bible Verse and Discussion Thread (11/19/2008 5:56:57 PM)

The Lord answered Job out of the storm. He said....
.... Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid it's cornerstone--- while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?

Job 38:1 & 4-7

Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed.
Proverbs 16:3

This seems pretty straightforward to me. If you commit whatever you do to the Lord, your plans will succeed. However, I don't think that means that everything you think will happen regarding your plans is actually going to happen. You will be a success in God's eyes, not necessarily the world's or even your own.

Humans set goals, define the metrics of accomplishment, strive to achieve and then declare victory when defined outcome results, anything less is failure.

I believe your commentary on this verse is accurate, and sadly in the minority of understanding even in most circles where people profess to be reborn. We often assume our way of thinking and expectation should be what God's way of thinking is. We fix our mind on a successful outcome and assume that meets God's measure of success as well and His plan. It's sad when we see this unbiblical logic masqarade as bibical truth, but it does. From a worldly viewpoint, the disciples were failures more time than not when they meet with beatings, imprisonment, and death, yet they were a success in God's plan of spreading the gospel and followed his commandments.
