Thats kind of where I am sitting with that. I WANT one pretty badly, but if I cant afford it, we'll skip it, at least at first. But the one we want is about $12 so it will probably be purchased at a shower.
I have seen inexpensive baby tubs used as punch bowls at showers, so you could always suggest that as an idea to a possible shower host if it's something you're looking for but don't want to put the money into yourself. It's actually quite cute...they froze teething toys and used them as ice cubes as well, so it provides some decoration for the shower but provides the mom-to-be with some great supplies that may not be neccessities, but are nice to have around.

We also have this swing. I really like that it can plug in or be battery run. I like that this swing can also go back and forth and side-to-side...and with those bright colours and cute animals, our babies will be swinging in style.

OK, my swing must have been a hand me down from the dark ages... it has a crank... and works wonderfully.
It winds down in about 15 minutes, but that's about time to at least visit a baby in a swing anyways.

My swing for two of my kids was a wind up one. It worked just fine! I didn't have a swing for my oldest child. I probably would have used it for my last, except I'd gotten rid of it.

I don't know why you are all saying things about the umbilical cord. Here we are told a washcloth with warm water when they are having a bath and then drying it with a towel is enough...
Some nice soft baby towels would be good, not sure if you have that on your list.
For me, this is what I find I have
Baby bath (our sink is terrible and our laundry is outside). I put the bath on the floor or the dining table.
Baby towels
Sorbolne cream for bathtime (I don't use soaps, they can dry out their skin)
Baby shampoo
Nappy Rash cream
Diapers (I hate that word  )
Dummy's (Pacifiers)
Single cot sheets to wrap baby in for bed (its alot easier than a blanket as they get too big for the baby blankets and a sheet means you aren't making them overly hot either).
Some cotton and flanelette sheets for the cot
Cot (or crib as you guys call it) and mattress
Diaper bag with changing mat
Bottles
Plastic feeding bowls with lids for when they get to eating solids, you can put the bits they don't eat in there and store in fridge, and handy for taking out
Sippy cup
Onesies and some nice outfits for church
singlets
beanie or hat if its cold
little stroller and then bigger one
teething toys, soft books, hardbooks, rattles etc etc
medicine droppers (I am always losing them so I have a few in the kitchen drawer)
U-shaped pillow is good for when they are learning to sit, you can put that behind them and it kind of supports them
I have a playmat because I believe tummy time and floor time is important and our carpet is yucky!
Rocker chair (bouncer)
Highchair
That's pretty much everything we have for Nathaniel and had for Grace.

When we had Noah, we lived in a TINY one bedroom trailer. We had a crib, a changing table where we stored all his clothes and supplies, and a swing. When he got too big for the swing, we switched that out for a high chair. In retrospect, we should have gotten a high chair that attaches to a regular kitchen chair, but I'm not sure they even made those when Noah was born.
Will you keep the baby in your room or some other arrangement? We turned the living room into Noah's room, but looking back, we should have made the one bedroom his and the livingroom ours. We were sometimes trapped in our room (no kitchen, no bathroom  ) because we didn't want him to see us when we were trying to get him to sleep.

We actually thought about putting her crib in the closet.. it's big enough. But the bar/shelf is low enough that bending over into crib could become problematic. And then I had guilt over Jer pointing out we could just shut the door when she fusses. He was kidding of course but preggo hormones are killer.
The only thing I'm remotely considering getting, and won't until I absolutely need it is a pack n play for living room.
I'm hoping that with her swing and car seat and the giant couch we have we can have her out here and not have to hold her 24/7. BUT if we need it we need it.

You can also get a booster seat with a tray that would work instead of a high chair. I'd wait on getting anything like that though since you'd just have to store it quite a while.
Our youngest never slept in a crib; just a pack and play.
When we had our first we had just a crib and dresser for her at first. Her infant carseat or a blanket on the floor were fine places for her to just hang out when we couldn't hold her.

Amy, what about a few of those standing tupperwares with the multiple drawers? There aer some that have like four drawers a piece, those are kind of small, and would hold the necessities for clothes. You could also store future clothing in either a thin tupperware that slips under your bed, or maybe even in the bottom of your closet....

I have one of those now for Levi's clothes because we didn't have enough dressers. It's one of the real wide ones and has three large drawers. It's still big enough for all his clothes.
But...a changing table with baskets will be more useful for a tiny baby. You could also look for either a crib with a drawer under it or buy a tote thing to go under it, for extra blankets, sheets, and stuff.

When we started out with Evan, our honeymoon baby, we lived in an apartment. He stayed in our room with us. We bought a tower bookcase (tall and skinny) for his clothing and supplies.
We had a porta-crib which doubled as a cosleeper, but you could also have a playpen with changing table insert or a basket sleeper.
Later on, when we had a larger place we got a changing table with shelves underneath (my mother picked it up for $10 at a garage sale) and a crib.

we don't use the crib til they are much older...Jack got into it about 16mo. Until then he was in a small travel size pack n play. It has an insert for the top for a bassinet...and the bottom part for when they get too big for the bassinet part. The travel size is what we have though...and it is small....I think it's about 2 feet side and 3 feet long.
As far as a dresser....if you have a bed that is up off the floor, could you put some plastic drawers or under bed storage containers under there for baby clothes? That would save lots of room on another piece of furniture.

yeah I agree with that for sure. I just put the baby's stuff in the dresser today and it all fits into one drawer.....well, the clothes do at least. The bibs, socks, shoes, and hats are all in another small drawer that we keep on the changing table...so you may need two..depending on the amount of drawer space you have.

I also had a crank swing.
Donna: I think they did make those high chairs that attach to a regular chair when Noah was born. My MIL bought one for her house when DD1 was a baby and she's 12.

Oh, I know...we have two of those also. I meant the ones that are actually high chairs...like THIS. I like that one because it reclines a bit for when you're feeding them baby food...easier than them sitting straight up in the booster seat.
