Oh, I know...we have two of those also. I meant the ones that are actually high chairs...like THIS. I like that one because it reclines a bit for when you're feeding them baby food...easier than them sitting straight up in the booster seat.

oh those....yeah they had those then too, we just chose the fold up kind since we used it for traveling purposes.

Me niether, Nicole. Our docs told us water and Q-tips and absolutely no alcohol or GV.

Oh, yeah, one more thing to add to the list...Q-tips! Good for the cord, circ, ears and for administering nystatin to a yeasty mouth.

If, say, you were living in a one-bedroom apartment with an infant, what furniture would you "need." A crib and a dresser? We are not planning on co-sleeping (hence the crib) and I assume I'd need a dresser or something to store clothes and what-not in. That's about all we can make room for, so I hope we can get by with little else [8D]

I've got that same one too. I'll never use a high chair either--I just know I'd hate it! High chairs seem like such a waste of space, and I can't stand clutter. [:)]

I am once again reviving and hijacking Erin's thread because I thought my question fit best here rather than in an entirely new thread [:)]

My mom and I are going to pick out a pack n' play this week and we will probably be using it as a crib. Does anyone have any advice on brands/styles/etc.? What are some things I should be looking at as I compare the different models? Since we won't be buying a real crib, I can probably spend a little more on the pack n' play. I guess I probably need something with a bassinet? Also, we hopefully won't be living in a one bedroom apartment forever, so we will eventually have a nursery with a crib or a bed for the baby, so I'd want the pack n' play to still be good for use as a play yard. Thoughts?

Also, I'm so confused about car seats and strollers [:o] I see some car seats that are attached to a stroller and can come off to go in the car. Did anyone have those and are they worth it or would it be better to buy an entirely separate stroller and car seat? If it matters, we aren't planning on this being our only child, so we'll be passing things on to all future children (i.e., I don't necessarily want to buy things that "grow" with your child to the point that he can take his crib to college with him--rebuilt as a full size bed [;)])

car seats/strollers.....
whatever model you buy, make sure you try it out in your vehicle before buying it. It will amaze you how small that trunk gets and that back seat is when you try to put things like that into it.
As far as the stroller system...do you plan to get a sling/wrap/carrier to hold the baby in? If so then it might not be very practical to get the stroller car seat system. Also, how often do you go places now where you would not want to be carrying a baby (either in your arms or in a carrier)? If it's not very often then you probably won't need the system.
We have the car seat/stroller whole system thing...got it with Jackson when I was at my moms and all our baby stuff was in Germany. Honestly, we have used it together twice...that's it. For us it is definitely not worth it. However the stroller I love...it has big wheels that make it easy to push on grass (like when we go to the park). It also has a bug guard netting I can cover it with so that bugs stay away from the baby (worked great when we have used it).
Mostly, we use shopping carts the normal places we go all the time, so the stroller doesn't get used too often...but when we do have need for it I like the way it is made (even if we have never used it with the car seat too much...we pretty much got the system because the regular infant car seats we could find were only about $10 less then the ones with a stroller too...so we opted for getting both for basically the same price).


playpen...most these days come with a bassinet for the top for when baby is small. We have several different kinds...one is a German one that is basically the sie of any baby bed...(one was given to us a few weeks ago so we are trying to figure out whether we will use it or not)...and the one we have for Justice (and that Jackson used as a baby) is a travel size pack-n-play. It fits into our small room very well. It's about 3 feet long and 2 feet wide...so much smaller then the regular sized ones, but we love it's versatility!! Jack slept in the top from the time we got it til he was sitting up (so a few months, because we got it when he was 3 months old)...then he slept in the bottom until he was about 18mo. From there we moved him to the baby crib outside of our room, but we could have easily moved him to a toddler bed at the time he got out of the playpen. (Of course remember that he doesn't grow too much...he is small for his age, so not all babies will be able to stay in something like that as long). Now we are using it for Justice, and it is still in perfect condition.

Amy, if your going to use the Pack n Play full time, then what about buying one of THESE? A mini-crib would be nice, and they aren't that much more expensive then a pack n play(I think ours was $100). I think they are a tad bit bigger then a PNP, but they would be better in the long run and you probably wouldn't have to buy a full sized crib. Gabby is 11 months, but the PNP is getting cramped for her and she doesn't especially love sleeping in it...

As for carseats.... It's really up to you. We used an infant carrier this time, I'm getting rid of it and we'll either buy another one or use a convertible seat with the next baby. There are pros and cons to each situation. Remember that car seats have an "expiration date", most of them are only good for 5-6 years, although there is one brand that is good for 8 years. We just bought Gabby THIS seat(I got a good deal on it), that will last her the next 6 years, it harnesses to 65lbs and can rear or forward face. Oh, and it rear faces to 35lbs which is the highest in the "industry" right now.

Amy, the only brand I would say to avoid for a pack'n'play / playpen is the Avalon ... they don't like to fold down that easily ... I've had a few different Avalons, and each time it took 2-3 of us fighting with it to get it to collapse so we could take it to my inlaws for an overnight visit.

Amy, I think the infant car seats are a nice feature when traveling with a baby up to 12 mo. They double as a bed when on the road. I think the best feature is they snap into the car and come out easily without waking the baby, which is a benefit when they are so young and need the rest. It allows for the mother to bring baby in tow without dealing with the crying from waking them. The down side is they only work till baby is 1year and 20 lbs.

The nice part about getting a pack and play for a bed is the pack and play can be taken with you easily. So if you are staying away from home, the baby has a bed. Plus, as baby gets a little older he can play in a confined area.

Basically, all this stuff is a preference depending on the baby and mother. I don't have any particular guidance on a brand though.

When my son was an infant I used an infant car seat (didn't attach to a stroller) until he was 1. Then I switched to the type of car seat Mrs. Wifey mentioned. Fortunately, the infant car seat was given to me which is also the case with this baby. I did find it helpful for the reasons mentioned above.

If money is a concern, then going with the convertible only would probably be a better bet.

Amy, I find the strollers that come with the stroller/carseat combos pretty useless for the most part. Depending on how often and for what purpose you will be using your stroller you might want to consider getting a different stroller and make sure you can clip your car seat into it.

We have this stroller (I bought it from ebay) and I *love* it!!! I wanted a jogger stroller because we do quite a bit of hiking/walking/camping but I wanted it to have a swivel wheel because it makes it so much easier when you are in smaller more confined spaces (like the mall or grocery store). It came with an infant car seat adapter and a huge list of car seats that attach.

I just want to clarify that the weight limit on most seats is 22lbs and the height limit is usually 29 inches. If a child is smaller then that at their first birthday then it's perfectly fine to continue using the infant seat. Likewise, as long as there are no extenuating circumstances it's always better to leave a child rear facing for as long as possible, preferably until they are 35lbs(or whatever the RF'ing limit on that seat is). The absolute bare minimum for turning a child forward facing is 12 months AND 20 lbs.

I used my Graco pack n' play for both my kiddos and I love it (still use it for Isabel some). It has the bassinet/changing table features at the top. I used those for a few months (when baby stayed in our room), then I've used it as a playpen/crib ever since. It folds/stores SO easily. It's the one like THIS

Strollers/carseats, I liked having the carseat carrier with the base and the stoller. It was nice and easy just transferring the carseat like that when baby was small. I think mine were the Evenflo brand (carseat, base, stroller). So I don't know much about other brands, but I liked mine.
