When my wonderful DH leaves, I always have a hard time sleeping ... for me that lasts about 3-4 weeks. I tend to get pretty jumpy around the house, too ... especially at night ... and every little sound sends my heart racing. I spend a lot of time checking and rechecking doors and windows. Yes, I'm a noodle. We found out yesterday that Marsha Cat (an outside stray that wandered into our life 2 months ago) has cancer, so we're paying to try surgery to save her fuzzy feline life. We spent a lot of time looking at and tweaking our budget to make this work, and talking about how much we can afford to put toward this. (Did I mention that she's not actually our cat? Well, after this I suppose she is ... she needs to live inside from now on.) I've been buying fun things to send to my wonderful DH in care packages ... I just love the Oriental Trading Company. I found some great Autumn rubber duckies (Halloween and Thanksgiving), plus 12 dozen plastic spiders (won't that be fun?), and lots of autumn leaves .... It's sort of "fall in a box." Anyway, I seem to have a LOT of this stuff, so if anyone wants some (free of charge, of course) to send to your deployed solider, just drop me a PM with your address and I'll send some your way as soon as the order gets here in the next few days. And let me know if Halloween-related items are (or are not) OK for you.

Hey, what's so funny about theme boxes, anyway? You should've seen the stuff I sent over there this past summer ... an entire flotilla of rubber duckies, lol! (Military rubber duckies, at that!) And red, white and blue EVERYTHING! LOL! Anyway, one of you has PMd me, so now both of our honeys will be getting "Fall in a box" ... hee hee hee. I'm just waiting for my catalog order to arrive! (Did you know that you can buy gummi candy shaped like rubber chickens, fried eggs, and roadkill? LOL!) Nothing says "I love you" like sugary roadkill, right? Thanks for the well-wishes for Marsha (short for Marshmellow) ... our fluffy white cat. Well, she's our girl now, at least! As my wonderful DH quipped tonight "Of course she's ours, we're paying a lot of money for her!" I also have a lot of fun and funny military avatars and sayings if anyone is interested ... let me know and I can check my Photobucket account. I use them a lot on my blog and on some other forums I frequent where we can post photos and graphics, etc. Tip for the day: Boston Market gives you a 10% military discount ... just ask!

Thanks Sarah for the info about what we can post. It's interesting they talk about tickers. I have one but it points to a wrong date. I figured no harm if it's not actually the right date. It seems I've been OK so far in that all I've said is province and country, not the base or anything. I'll have to add that page to my favs. Haven't had much contact with hubby lately, we've both been so busy and he's now in an area that doesn't have good phone or internect connection. I did get my Flat Daddy though. Has anyone gotten one? A friend gave me the money to get one as a gift. Now all I need is to find a big enough piece of cardboard to put the sticker on and hubby can join us for dinner again. I also have all the materials together to make a Daddy doll for each of the kids. I printed out a picture of Rob on transfer paper and bought fabric to iron it on. Now I just need to find the time to finish them.

Did any of you ladies see an interesting documentary on The Military Channel? It was called "God's Soldier", all about Army chaplains currently serving in Iraq. I didn't get to see all of it, but what I did see looked very well done.

Update: Cat's cancer surgery The surgery was delayed 2 days because the vet was ill ... but occurred Thursday afternoon. They decided to keep her overnight so she could stay on morphine/transition her to a pain patch. (She's wearing one of those cone things.) The plan is to bring her home today (Friday) and get her set up all by herself in our office. Since she's been an outside cat, living inside will already be a big switch for her (she was a stray that is now "ours") ... and of course she's recovering from major surgery. So she will be a solo kitty in our office for a while. It's a nice sized room ... with a big window / ledge overlooking the backyard bird feeders (a shady window), a 4-story cat condo, her own litter box, food, water, desk, bookshelvers, filing cabinets, plus a futon-couch. Spacewise, it's very roomy for a cat. There's a locking clear plexiglas cat door in the door .... so she can SLOWLY get acquainted with the rest of our kitty herd, but still be safe and alone. Once she is all healed, we'lll work slowly on getting her introduced to the rest of the kitty clan. Our goal (fingers crossed) is to give her access to the whole house (2700 sq ft/4 bedroom) with all its windows, kitty condos, etc. We'll just have to see how she does as part of an indoor cat colony of ... twelve. (12?!? How did that happen!?) All rescues, of course. She will be one of four other female cats ... the rest are boys. Continued prayers for an infection-free, cancer-free, complication-free recovery are requested ... plus a smooth and peaceful transition into being a "whole house" kitty who gets along with the gang. And please pray for our vet who has stomach cancer, too! Harvie

Sandy, I have been thinking and praying for you and Justin. There was a segment on NewsHour yesterday about Army chaplains -- there is a video feed of the segment on this page. I thought it was well done and very fair. Praying for the rest of you all, too. Sarah, I was thinking that you needed a flat daddy years ago.

It's funny, when Rob left I told myself to beware of the six week mark. During a class I was taking on long term, overseas missions I learned that this is when "culture shock" hits really badly. Last week I had a really rough week. I was depressed and couldn't explain why or shake it, grumpy - VERY grumpy with the kids and just had a couple of really rotten days. After things started to look up I realized that, sure enough, it was the six/seven week mark that this happened. I guess it was a home version of culture shock, the new culture of our home with no daddy around. Last weekend it didn't help that Zion and Gideon were quite sick and I couldn't leave. I needed meds and ran out of bread, milk, and juice and was stuck at home. Gideon's temp was 101.6, I was SO not taking him out. It was frustrating at times. This week was a TON better. Sunday a neighbor who bought a new fridge brought over the box so I can use the cardboard for my Flat Daddy. I'll let you know when I get it done and post a pic. My hubby got to do training on horseback today. I am so crazy jealous. I can't remember when I got to ride last. Not a day goes by that I don't think about it though.

I have 5 nights to record my husbands snoring before I don't get to have that anylonger- We are buying a digital voice recorder today that I can load the files to the computer and burn them to CD. My idea--- and i am unsure if it will work or not yet--- is to burn the CD in several tracks and get a CD player I can set to shuffle/repeat(loop?) and let play all night and slowly wean myself off of the snoring. *sigh* it is a good idea no? Hoping it works... I am going to make a mark for the 6 weeks thing. TWICE once for the Ft Bragg time and another for the sandbox time. NOW I need to go entertain visiting family. (They brought him a Camel Spider box, you know a plastic bug box LOL!)
