Thanks for that, Cappucino.

Interesting tidbit I picked up today, in reference to the Amish not being evangelical enough. Apparently some are. Inoticed in the Voice of The Martyrs magazine that we recieved today a mention of an Amish bishop who was one of their missions directors, and who smuggled Bibles into Russia on a regular basis. That seems to me fairly "active" as far as evangelizing and missionary work. [;)]

I'd have to agree with you there.

Can somebody please tell me about the beachy Amish?

I was raised in the Mennonite church and went to a Mennonite university. Most Mennonites fit into society pretty well -- the ones I've associated with have no trouble with computers, cars, buying stocks, etc. They are "just" a group of Christians who believe that Christians should not engage in any warfare. They also tend to be highly concerned about social justice issues, feeding the hungry, etc. The Mennonite churches I've been to had good Bible-based preaching. So it's not a weird cult or anything. [:)]

Thank you! That's one of the main things that stands out in my mind about the Mennonite people I've known. Pacifism and social justice.

I can't say that I totally agreed with them on some of these issues, but I certainly respect their integrity and consistency!

I know nothing of them, but this is a Wikipedia site about them. I hope it helps just a little.

I didn't look at the link.
I was raised in a mennonite church and have plenty of amish relatives.
if there is one commonality within all of the many various varieties of religions it is that they are all anabaptists.

some amish trivia: [:D]
in the area I live in, there are 5 amish churches. in one of the churches you cannot put a motor in your boat. In 3 of the churches you can put a motor in your boat, but you cannot have a steering wheel in it. and in one of the churches you can have a boat with both a motor and a steering wheel.
it is completely the bishop and elders' call.

Ok, that's just weird about the boats.

Thanks for the link.

In my experience they are more "liberal" than most and much more missions minded. My dad got to go on a missions trip to eastern Europe with a Beachy family and he never forgot that. That was just before the Berlin Wall came down and they *did* smuggle Bibles. [:D] That particular family ended up putting together the Christian Hymnary which many different anabaptist groups use. They were incredible singers and very muscially talented, even though they never used any musical instruments.

That's awesome!
