ORIGINAL: TMeeks The first extra lens that I purchased was the 100mm macro. It is an excellent lens. But, it's a specialty lens that is not likely to be used all that often. I've rarely found it to be suitable to use as a 'walk around' lens. Right. I think it is useful for pretty much anything that fits in the frame. Unfortunately, that's rarely the case for things you see when walking around, unless you can back up quite a bit. However, it's good for more than just macro shots. I also plan to use it for portraits of people. I also just ordered the 50mm f/1.8 lens, which is only $90. Really wanted the f/1.4, but it's $320, so that will wait. I'm hoping this one will get decent handheld shots in low light. Next I want either a super-wide angle 10-22mm (the Sigma is $500 and the Canon is $700 so that will be a tough sell to my wife) or a decent 55-300 zoom. Once I get both of those I should be about set for anything! Ezri -- just BUY the 100mm macro if at all possible. You won't regret it! I think it would be hard to justify renting unless you need it for one specific project and then likely won't need it again. Also worth considering is just buying it, then selling it on Craigslist after you're done. Since it will be in virtually new shape, I bet you would get more than the "new" price minus what the rent place charges.
