CherishedbyGod -> The Seriousness of Perjury & Lying (6/6/2008 4:41:16 PM)

Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

1Timothy 1:9-11

In these verses, the Lord puts perjury and lying in with murderers, etc. I was kind-of surprised when I read that. They are listed as an example of lawlessness.

I know all sins are horrible but why does the Lord put those two in with murderers, etc? Are they particularly offensive to Him?

Bluethread -> RE: The Seriousness of Perjury & Lying (6/6/2008 7:11:31 PM)

Paul is starting his instructions to Timothy with a warning against false teachers who are given to long-winded self-righteous theological arguments. The good news(Gospel) is that the guilt associated with Ha Torah(The Word) has been removed through Ha Meshiach(The Messiah). So, now we are free to see it as loving correction as it was intended and not for condemnation. So, it appears to me that to enforce the urgency of this instruction he is reminding Timothy that bearing false witness to and misuse of this good news and Ha Torah(The Word) is equivalent to being a murderer or a pimp.

Thank you! That was something I had not even remotely considered[8|] And thanks for helping to explain your answer to this unscholarly type.

Cherished.... I think I might be able to shed a little light on this one. God is love, and God is true. In fact, in the description of Jesus in Revelation 19, His name (indicating His very identity) is "Faithful and True". In that regard, nothing is more opposite of God's character than being untruthful. Just as in how the two greatest commandments are to love and God IS Love, so also, God is passionate about us having truth and being truthful. Art Katz actually wrote a heck of a book on it called "Spirit of Truth" (you can download it for free on his website). It's a convicting read, but it's a good pain.

I agree! And that is exactly what I had in mind when I posted this! The foundation of our faith rests on the faithfulness of God. Can He be trusted? For, if He is unfaithful or untrustworthy in one tiny thing then the whole gospel and the very character of Christ is worth nothing because we could no longer trust Him.

I will check out that book - thanks!

Hi, Cherished,[sm=wave.gif]

Do you think God ever deceives anyone?[sm=wink.gif]

Oh, by the way lying is an abomination (detestable) in God's eyes. So how much more God is incapable of doing that. Look at what company it keeps in this list:

16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him:

17 haughty eyes,
a lying tongue,
hands that shed innocent blood,

18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,

19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. (Prov. 6)

And like many sins, lying is just another way we hate people:

"A lying tongue hates those it hurts..." (Prov. 26:28)

Hi Spongey,

Thank you for your reply. I guess I am surprised at just how serious it is in God's eyes. I knew it is a sin but I did not realize it is one of the big 7.

I am very concerned about a so-called believer who has become a chronic lier and has committed purgery. Maybe they were in the past and I did not realize it.

No, you are correct...God never deceives. Satan is the master of deception. Sigh...another one caught in his trap...
