Thanks for the information! I think maybe my sons are too old then for it (17, 14, and 11). It is interesting though. It seems like a very popular summer program in the USA!

The 11 yr old could probably go. My oldest is 12 and she is able to go at some places. At our church she will be a helper.

It is pretty popular. In our area there is at least one church doing it every week all summer so kids could go for several weeks in a row if they wanted. I think the most we did in one summer was 5. My kids are VBS junkies.

We are spending most of the summer in Roma and Lazio, so there is no VBS here that I have ever heard of. When they are in the city, they play football (soccer), and when we are at the countryside, they run around the groves and vineyards and chase birds!

For the fall term they are going to school in the USA, and my wife and I will stay in our house there. Maybe there is something in churches there like this during the academic year for children and teens? I will look into it.

Many churches have AWANA clubs for kids and teens, and youth groups for teens.

I will look for information on these clubs! They will be at an academy during the week but home with us on the weekends.

Are those your children with the flowers? That is a beautiful picture!

The lesson leader has the verse on a poster and we read it through several times but I don't think we ever try to say it without looking at it. We don't give any "homework" or take an offering either.


Just to be clear...our church doesn't do it either and seeing how they do it was my first experience of seeing another way to do VBS. We used to send our oldest to a VBS one town over because we know a bunch of people at that church. But after seeing the same kids "win" every year, and usually all the leader's kids...I just don't care for the emphasis on competition.

If your kids are home one weekends they could definately look into youth groups at churches. Our church has youth group for kids from 6-12th grade (6-8th grade at one time and then 9-12th grade) on Sunday nights. They have a Bible study, snack times, fellowship. THey go on a couple retreats during the school year and also do some ministry/service projects on occsional Saturdays. During the summer they have fun activities with all the kids together: swimming, picnic at someone's house or park, miniature golf, etc.

I have a funny VBS story from this year.

Our church is doing the Rambling Road Trip (yes, I know that's an old one, and I don't quite know why they are doing an old one).

Many of you are already familiar with what the Ramblin' Road Trip theme is--everyone pretends they are traveling across the country and each day takes place at a different pretend location.

I made the flyers and we distributed hundreds of them one night. The next day pastor received a phone call from a very upset lady--why would we allow little 4-yr-olds to be loaded up into RV's and taken across the country to all those places????!!!!!!

Also to add to this it is free . I had a freind a few year ago who if they when to anychurch activity they had to pay. Her children when with mine and the 9 yr old accepted Christ. The church sponsper it in most cases. A lot of the time children go to several in the summers months it a great way to meet and get to know churhes and other with children the same as yooours. Have fun !

Hi, here is a question, my pastor ask for donations for VBS they have raised 2,000 or over, but wants five thousand a lady in church I talked to was upset about 5,000 for VBS. We have a church form 250-300 people it depends on the Sunday. What do you all think as far as budget? I do arts and crafts and have nothing to do with budget. I do spend about 300 to 400 dollars of my own funds on arts and crafts each summer though. We usually have about 160 kids to 200. They are hoping for three hundred. Remember I am not in charge, and have nothing to do with money, I only contribute and work arts and crafts, so please no one take this, and be mad at me. Thanks.[:)]

Have they asked for donations of supplies? I don't know what our VBS budget is, but I bet it's not much. The director puts together a list of things that are needed and people sign up for what they want to provide.

Once we discovered Groups format we have used it many times mainly because of the way they divide the kids into smaller groups and have more crew leaders instead of just a few teachers.

What other publisher's have you done and would you recommend it to someone else?

Also, I was wondering if anyone has done any of David C Cooks programs?

Our church has only done VBS the past three (two?? this might be the third) years and we used Group each time. I wasn't involved in the planning the other years, or in finding what we would use, so I don't really know...sorry.

I don't know what our VBS budget is exactly but it's not near 5K and we had about 120 kids last year and expect 200 this year. We also send letters to local businesses asking for donation. For example we knew someone who worked for Stauffers snack food and got boxes of individual bags of animal crackers donated. I think all our snacks were donated including water bottles for the kids and bottles of lemonade and ice tea for the leaders.

For crafts they had a list of supplies they needed and put up notices. Things like yarn and fabric were donated.

We had one of those inflatable water slides donated.

Last year we bought pizza for lunch one day. This year we hope to get enough donations to have hotdogs another day.

I think they spend way to much, but then I do not know. Yes they ask for craft supplies, and many donate. They go way overboard. I remember just simple stay in one room, have one teacher. The most fun ne I went to was at the park as a kid. Simple is better, IMHO. BTW thank you.

Zoebob, have you tried writing names on blank address labels and attaching them to the water bottles?

$5000 sounds way high for a VBS budget; how many kids are expected? People are usually very willing to donate snacks and other things at our church. Sometimes ordering craft supplies from Oriental Trading can be cheaper than ordering from the publisher, and they may have similar stuff.

We've done Group's Holy Land series the last two years; this year it was Jerusalem Marketplace. Has anybody else done that program for several years in a row? Do the kids get bored with it.? I like it and we have all the stuff we need for it, so it works well to stay with that series.

Yes people donate. They are expecting three hundred children ( hopefully). I do not deal with the budget. One lady is very upset about the amount, I do not know the norm. Your VBS sounds very fun. I think they ordered from Orential Trading.

My kids have doen the Holy Land one. I think they did two slightly different ones. THey love it. They dress up in costumes all night and are in tribes that are not organized by age so the bigger ones can help the smaller ones.

Do any of you remember the one classroom, VBS. You know a teacher and assistant, do lesson,craft, so on by age group? Go outside for games and snacks. I wish instad of stations things were simple like that again. Do anyone of you do that style. I remember one in a park, that still stands out in my memory years later.

I understand Money is a hard issue for many when it come to children It take a lot at time, but it also take people that can think outside the box when it come to crafts it easier to buy some thing or pre made kits etc thant to rethink ways to do things It really depend on the money you have and will spend .I am a pre school/children teach of 30plus year i look at craft and then made the craft out of the item i know I have or can get for free or les. But again thea takes time and experance, I have also found web site that share and swap ideals,craft ideals and even shipp nused supplies for the cost of shipping ths was my God blessing this year I just frinshed up a week of teaching 2-6 yrs old and only had 7 days to prepare a, lady sended me the extra left over from hers last year! (It has to be worked in to the planing stages you need to know the budget )before you start and the est of the children that may show up I try to keep the cost per child under 1.00 per day many times it is .50 or less Buy in bulk and recycle durning the week, as many item as you can most childern really just love thet craft time not alway what it is. Paper /gule/paint/chalk all is cheap and most love it in in form!! Have Fun and Show CHRIST !! Start now the day after this years planing for the next!!! Orgzine and past the left over on to the next year or children year round activites!

Lighshine YES!! I remember them! It has change thu the years as I see it helps in some ways people that have a specail calling as craft /music can help with all the ages not just the one they are in the room with. On the other side it is harder to bond with the children because they are always going from one group to another ! Some times I think we as children workers (I need) to slow down and listen to the child and have some one on one time . It really is suprising to what the children will tell you. As some say ; children tell all the things you wish they would not!! I've head it all the past 30 years!! Teens really spill the bean sometimes!!! Christ call the little children and it alway looks like he is talking to them but i really belived He listen to them to!!

We have "Backyard Bible Clubs" in lieu of VBS ... where people volunteer their yard to host a mini VBS in their neighborhood. (They provide the yard and the snack.) This year we had 35 families volunteer. The church trains volunteers for the games and crafts (we had a lo of high school and middle school volunteers this year) ... and volunteer bible teachers ... they provide the parachute, games, crafts and curriculum ... this year we had between 21 and 39 kids at each house!!!! We start off with parachute games, move to the bible study for 25 minutes ... a short review (with lollipops for answers), a small craft, snack then end with water games. The neat thing is you reach more kids as well as un-churched children ... and it is a great way to impact your neighborhood by establishing lasting relationships with the children and parents in your neighborhood that can last for years!

I wish in many ways churchs would do more "out in the community" like this we had children in the area that wanted to come to out VBS but parents would not let them or bring them1 I hope next year we can do a few in local backyard.trailer parks etc to reach these that want and need to hear the stories etc!!
