When we lived in Germany we spoke german to our daughter in addition to english. Her babysitter was german and spoke german to her. She went to american school but she played with german and american children. English was her first language but she spoke fluent german. It was never a problem, when she was in school or with english-only speaking people she spoke english, when she was with german-speaking people, she spoke german.
