Sorry for the misunderstanding QTFan, I too agree.. I think no naked singing is a dress rule that all groups ought to abide by.[:)]

But what if they're singing at a come-as-you-are church and they only had enuf time to jump out of the shower?[;)][:D]

Well, I don't normally wear suits, but when I do, my wife has commented that I look "hot" (as in attractive).

So...you're telling us that marrying a woman whose eyesight has gone bad has at least one benefit! [:D]

Qtman -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/14/2008 5:41:56 PM)

DBM I'm glad yousaid that. I didn't want to hurt his feelings. My wife thinks or at least says I look hot when dressed up. I think it is on of those wife biases. I have not seen tafkam but I have had a chance to look at me.[:D]

GospelProducer -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/14/2008 8:13:24 PM)

My wife thinks I look hot in a suit..and she's right. You try putting this 300 lbs in a suit and tie and see if you don't only LOOK hot but FEEL hot as well [;)]

Bassinger24 -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/14/2008 8:22:06 PM)

This is a great topic. As for my group, we always dress in suits and ties unless of course we are outside. We keep a dress casual outfit on the bus for such occasions. We travel alot with some of the top evangelists as well as the georgia baptist convention, alabama baptist convention and texas baptist convention so we are always careful on how we dress. We have taken some flack in the past because we are always in suits and it seems like alot of groups are going more casual. I have nothing against casual dress but feel more comfortable entering a church to sing in a suit and tie. I guess its just a personnal conviction of mine. I feel like Jesus gave His best, His only son, for us so I should give him my best in uniform as well as vocally. Again, I have nothing against sg groups dressing more casual but as for me and the group i travel with ,we will be in suits.[;)]

GospelProducer -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/14/2008 8:24:50 PM)

Seriously, I think the whole thread boils down to the fact a group or artist should dress how they feel is appropriate. I know artists that wouldn't think of getting up in church without a suit while others sing in a button up shirt and jeans. As long as you feel good about it, then whatever you have on is probably ok with the Master, and he can take care of anyone that disagrees lol

I think this approach with a touch of knowing the audience you are singing to works. Even if you feel comfortable in a shirt and jeans if you in a church that is 'all suits' chances are at least a few folks are going to feel you are under dressed. It shouldn't affect your outreach but truthfully if you are there to reach them, considering what they think is appropriate can be important too.

Right on Brandon! Jesus gave His BEST for us and we should give our best to Him! Does anyone know where the saying "Sunday best" came from? If your best is jeans and a t-shirt, then that's YOUR BEST. If we have the means to do better, then we should. We all know God is not impressed by "outward appearances" - He is interested in our heart attitudes.

A classy, professional appearance on stage.....suits get my vote! [;)]

hoppersfan -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/15/2008 1:35:59 PM)

I don't think SG artists have to wear suits and formal wear in all of their concerts. And I don't think it makes sense to wear this type of attire for an outdoor event. It's really hard to be a blessing when you're having a heat stroke! I think modesty and neatness are very important, and you don't have to be in a suit to be modest and neat.

preacherman2210 -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/15/2008 8:04:30 PM)

I would like to give my take on the way groups dress. I am a pastor, and we dress casual. I was raised to wear a suit and tie to church, no matter what. However, I have noticed in my many years, that the days of men wearing suits to church, is ALMOST a thing of the past. These days, MOST men don't even own a suit. So, we decided to "go casual". The worship team, band, and anyone in leadership, still dresses nice, but NO SUITS. I invited a southern gospel group recently to sing for the morning service, and told them they didn't have to wear suits and ties. They wore them anyway. They looked like funeral home directors. I did not wear a suit, and I am the pastor. The group just looked out of place.
Yes, I believe you should look your best. However, sometimes suits and ties can make some unapproachable.

Groups- Look at the way the pastor and staff dresses, and dress approapriate.

The "MOST MEN" you talk about are not the "MOST MEN" that I know. I know ALOT of guys that own a suit and tie, and they look, oh let me see, how do I want to say this.......PROFESSIONAL.

EDIT: let me explain further my position. I don't think casual is wrong or that you MUST always wear a suit and tie, but I think that the church is in a spiraling downward path of giving up things that are good. To me, this is just one more thing of many. First the KJV to, no, not one other version but MANY versions, meeting less often, getting more wordly (in all ways--this includes dress), in faith, etc. Someone said the church is at any time only 10 years behind the world, so as the world degresses, so the church follows only 10 years behind. Does this makes sense?

But for the Professional Group a suit and tie IS what they feel is appropriate. I do not think it is a suit and tie that makes someone unapproachable but rather the attitude that some will often have due to their attire and how they feel about others not dressed like them. I do not know of any SG Artist who is "unapproachable" and believe me when I say that I and others on these threads know plenty of them both onstage and off.[:D] The fans are a large part of what the SG industry is built upon so why would anyone feel an SG artist is "unapproachable"? [:D]

Please don't take this wrong but I don't know how you equate dressing in a modest and casual way to giving in to many loose translations of the beloved KJV bible.

If you want to discuss the KJV, do it HERE, not in this thread.

Thanks!

Bassinger24 -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/16/2008 1:23:22 PM)

Here is what i am thinking. Aren't we, as presenters of the gospel, suppose to be set apart? Don't get me wrong..again i have nothing against casual dress but as an evangelist I feel that I should look a little different than everybody else coming to hear a singing. I think that fans actually expect that out of a group. I know I did! That's one of the things that drew me to southern gospel as a nine year old little boy.....seeing Gold City, The Inspirations, The Cathedrals, The Kingsmen looking sharp! It was a "wow" factor that drew me to what they were saying and singing on stage. An "attention getter" if you will..lol!

Kerrlaw -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/16/2008 2:46:59 PM)

I've been reading that only 6% of men wear ties to work now.

Fashion trends come and go over the years. It wasn't that long ago that almost every man wore a hat every day.

Personally, I look forward to the demise of the tie.

Ok on youtube I found The Kingsmen in suits and casual singing the same song....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9wJ2v_k6FQ

The recording quality is different but it seems the crowd loves it either way.

Just my opinion.....

Qtman -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/16/2008 3:05:07 PM)

If it was a group I wanted to see I wouldn't let their style of dress keep me away. But, just for the record when we were singing, a very very local group, we always wore matching suits and ties.

TQ_Fan_4_Life -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/16/2008 3:39:59 PM)

Brandon, I disagree with one thing.

I don't want to be an attention getter. I don't want the attention. God needs it from people not the singers.((personally the style I will be doing, I will weight 20 pounds from sweating in a suit.))

Seems a lot in here have same feelings i do. I just am not comfy in a suit and won't be uncomfortable to appease people when God deserves the praise and He is the One I am trying to please.

preacherman2210, you are the kind of preacher i love to be in Church with.

now, so what if a singer decides to be more comfy. as was said, you dress all casual but since he IS the singer, he has to suffer by wearing suit and tie. and yes i am one that will be buried in jeans and cowboy shirt. in my will, bury me in suit and i will haunt the ones who did. [:D]

smithtim -> RE: Southern Gospel Group dress (6/16/2008 3:42:26 PM)

I have a 22" neck and I can and do wear a tie with a suit when I sing with no problems. However, with that being said I just want you to know that I hate wearing a tie! Also, I do not always wear a suit when the setting calls for something else. A few weeks ago I sang at a two day singing at a cowboy church and none of the guys singing wore suits.
