ORIGINAL: car2ner This thread just confirms why so many churchs use choir robes, as tacky as they are.... it keeps the congregation from spending time judging the singers' clothing. That's a good point car2ner. I go to a Presby church now where the pastor wears a robe in the traditional service but goes casual in the contemporary. He's got a pot belly that is always spreading his buttons apart, and I'll bet that more than once he's had his barn door open. The point is, clothes draw attention either way. I used to have a couple roomies that had a competition on Sunday mornings to see who dressed better. They had girls at the church be judges. Shallow. But I've also seen guys wearing sports jerseys or old shorts and a dirty t-shirt, and women with clothing that was WAY too revealing (though I suspect every one of them would have said 'what's the big deal, God only looks at my heart') Society has gone to an extreme of rebelious, adolescent sloppiness and sensuality. What we wear can make a statement against that and, like it or not, it can effect others in their worship and growth.

Well as long as a womans or mens personal parts are not in view, I do not care what they wear. Upon stage a PW leader realy needs to make sure that ( women esp.) who jump and bounce need suppotive under garments.

People who make the excuse that G-d only looks at their hearts so they can wear revealing clothes, those who say they have no responsibility if their revealing clothing distracts someone, and those who wear revealing clothing then blame the other gender for being distracted are not fooling G-d in the least, and I seriously doubt they are even fooling themselves. G-d cares about what is worn in public worship. He says we are to dress modestly, and that includes not wearing revealing clothing -- both men and women. Good night! He even told the priests to wear breeches under their robes so that they would not be exposed as they climbed the stairs! However, those who say that women bear the responsibility if they dress decently, but men still look and are distracted, are just plain foolish. The day I put on a burqa, or burqa-like clothing, will never come.

I wore a rock T-shirt to church once back the 80's. It was the first time I ever felt that maybe what I was wearing at church wasn't appropriate.

Dear Tricia, nothing wrong with that, but, let us pray the deodorant is still hard at work. My husband stinks after soccer, softball, fishing and such. But my hubby is a big guy, and maybe he just stinks more when doing sports activities. quote:

But I've also seen guys wearing sports jerseys Hey, nothing wrong with this. When you're heading straight to the game after church, it saves you the step of having to change!

I meant going to the game AFTER church, not beforehand, so yes, the deodorant would be fully effective. I more had in mind going to a professional sporting event. At my old church, there were a LOT of purple jerseys in the service on the days the Vikings had a home game. Never saw anyone wear their face paint, though - I guess they applied that later.

Oo-oo-oo-oo! The Vikings! The Twins! When my first husband had such a fun-loving, wacky way. We lived in Bloomington, MN, and he would have me bake a cake around the time of the bigger games, then he would come home and frost them, decorating them with Vikings or Twins stuff. He used almost only stars, but the cakes looked fabulous when he was through. he would take them to work the next day, and his employees would devour them. He never wore purple to church, though. Unacceptable in that church. We all had to pretend that we didn't care about sports and never went to any games. Professional games were EEEEEEviiillllll!

I looked up that scripture about man looks on the outward appearance ,but God looks on the heart.God was not meaning He did not care what we wear, because He does.He was talking about the people choosing a king because he looked comely,or rather looked "good".And even that He was not meaning his clothes,God was referring to his countinence. This is why God said" Man looketh upon the outward appearance,God looketh upon the heart."He was not referring to the clothes.

At my last church (still looking for a new church home now that we've moved) we had a message that involved taking someone, putting them into an GA Dawgs jersey, face painting and spray painting the hair. Our volunteer didn't really know what we were going to do to 'em, and were good sports (no pun intended). Clothes do give a message. God sees past the clothes but our brothers and sisters sometimes don't.

I don't really care what people wear so long as it is modest, and respectful. But much of it is not modest. The bathing suit comment, yes it was to extreme. However I do still wonder where the church will draw the line.It seems we as Christians are trying to see how close we can live in the world and still call ourselves Christians.

I am not sure "in the world" has clear cut definitions. What line is crossed when we start wearing clothes that are "worldly"? I would say immodesty would always be "in the world". I am not sure expensive clothes are always "in the world". I would guess the purpose behind wearing expenisve clothes might be worldly. I think for the most part....covetness comes into play. Maybe its not being offended by immaculate clothing that is the true problem. Maybe..we are...jealous? Maybe not but there might be a factor of this involved. Maybe we should institute a church uniform like they do for schools? Wear what you want to outside of church but in church you must wear the church uniform? ( I could see this might also help with funding... ) Outside of modesty, I don't care what you wear. Suits or shorts as long as you are there for Jesus.

Yikes...Larry King? I personally wear jeans at times, especially in the winter when we may have to help shovel out a member or help someone across a snow covered lot, shovel snow, what have you, sometimes wear jeans in the summer, sometimes walking shorts and a polo shirt. As for flip flops, I prefer the sandals that don't go through the two toes.
