During the 12+ years I lived in Indiana, the weather could get pretty bad. However, if you needed help you only had to look to your neighbor - who was probably already helping you.

I'll bet your favorite passage of scripture is Proverbs 25:21-22.

My question is...where are all the "prophets" proclaiming this is God's wrath? It seems with every natural disastor there is some preacher going on and on about how the region deserved what it got.

Must be that racism I hear about that inhabits america and its churches. Middle america gets hit with terrible floods and no one blames their sins for the weather because middle america...is white...????

Gotta be racism....eh?

Post 26. I think I was the first to bring up race in this discussion. I brought it up because I knew sooner or later race would be mentioned as the difference between New Orleans and Iowa. It was inevitable.

The reason why many gave that NO did not recieve aid "fast enough" was race. Did the government act faster in Iowa? Will there be more of an outpouring of support for the Iowa floods than NO?

How come its so silent on this issue? Where is Jesse Jackson proclaiming Iowa is getting special treatment because they are white? Did the government swoop into Iowa because so many white people were in harm's way?

Iowa disporves the racial components some used for the NO disastor...100%...but you will NEVER hear that on tv...eh??

Peter_Gunn -> RE: No fuss about flooding? (6/18/2008 8:09:04 AM)

My mother (in Iowa) told me yesterday that FEMA is already there and working very hard...everyone affected already has a case number. She even commented that they were much more efficient than they were in New Orleans.

The first thing I thought was, "Well, they've had plenty of practice now."

When Katrina hit, it had been quite a while since our own country had experienced such a huge natural disaster. I really hate to "defend" anything governmental, but, in defense of FEMA, they were very out of practice.

Now, before you scream...that's not a sufficient excuse, I admit. But I think that's really all it was and is, and has nothing to do with race. It's just much more "fun" to play the race card.

With the midwest flooding, which by the way also is and will be further affecting New Orleans, the people working with FEMA will be more efficient due to their recent experiences.

greetings fellow hoosier,
I have lived here all my life. The tornadoes that hit a few weeks ago hit just 2 blocks down where I live. I praise God that I was spared but immediately my only thought was to help. When I toured the "hot spots", I couldn't believe my eyes. The apartments that were hit were just demolished. Not just one apartment complex, but many. And the line of the tornado hit in a low-income area. An area I 've been interceding for a long time with high crime, drugs, etc. I believe the Lord is getting folks attention. But anyway, my 14 yr old son and I donated 6 bags of clothes and shoes. I made him give up his "nice" clothes. I told him just don't give away something you don't want to wear anymore, give away something that means something, something that you like and have just worn. He fussed a bit but eventually I made him understand the lost that people are experiencing. I gave up my good stuff too. I told him as you give, you are giving unto God and is a sacrifice. I walked in a church that is a holding spot and seen cots and cots of displaced women, men and children. It just wakes you up to understand that the pettiness and silliness that we read on different forums is just so unimportant & irrelevant to the things of God. Lots of people lost everything and most of them didn't have renters insurance so it is just terrible. It looks like a war-torn neighborhood for a 30 block stretch. Boarded up aprt bldgs, suburban houses that folded in like a stack of cards, it looked like, well...New Orleans, except it was a tornado. There just isn't any preparation for it. We heard the sirens but what do you do when all you have is a bathtub and the roof is being ripped off @ 10:30pm? Nothing but cry out to God for His mercy. I pray that those who cried out, remember on Whom they called when all this is past. To repent and turn away from sin and receive life from the Lifegiver.

God bless you,

greetings fellow hoosier,

Hi there!

I'm not in Indiana anymore. Unless God has a plan that hasn't been revealed to me yet, I won't be living there again.

jstbeliev -> RE: No fuss about flooding? (6/18/2008 8:26:21 AM)

greetings,

Umm, no. Actually one of my favorites is this:

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. 41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: 42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: 43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. 44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. 46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

The Lord's blessing to you,

Why not? We have tornadoes of every size and color, why we even have flash floods and muy mucho rain...not to mention all the big beautiful white stuff that comes down hard in the winter [:D]

Other than that...it is great living here...lol.

Take care and have an abundantly blessed day in the Lord,

There were a lot of problems from top to bottom with FEMA and part of the problem was that they were not prepared for a natural disaster the scope of Katrina. That is a fact. It was disorganized and floundering until the military took over with the appointment of Honore and Allen. Those two brought immediate control with how they handled the situation. The bureaucrats were unable to meet the task. One thing Katrina did was to show the ACOE that their levees and dams are not necessarily built according to the latest information to the building requirements of the soils and ground beneath the structures. Just last night on the History channel this very issue was highlighted.

There were many locals helping their neighbors but they didn't get the press. I mean showing a bunch of regular guys doing what they always do when trouble hits isn't as newsworthy as showing the distortions that passed for news.

in the good ole' city of Naptown, you know...Indianapolis, the place to be when you want to take a lot of naps cause aint much else to do? yeah that would be us...LOL! Well, its not that bad, slightly worse. Seriously, we are striving to make the city more touristic other than the "500 race", we need to be more art-oriented. There's just so little happening as far as artistic cultural events other than the Museum of Art & Eiteljorg. But, we are going to hold the Superbowl in 2012! Whoohooo.

God bless,

Oh I'm sure all those poor black folks had "fun" during Katrina. In fact let me call some of my kinfolks that we're there and ask again.

As for race, this is a very racist country.

Some people cannot stand the honesty about that. Oh well.

You want me to say you have a heart , but really you got a spade?

Sorry no can do!

You don't understand. With Tracy, even traffic lights are race-related because they don't have black or brown lights.

Jimbo, RMBAOTF

Did you give the BLACK man who help to create and patent the Traffic light credit?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garrett_Morgan

Garrett Augustus Morgan, Sr. (1877 – 1963) was an African American [/s inventor who originated a respiratory protective hood (similar to the modern gas masks), invented a hair-straightening preparation, and patented a type of traffic signal. He is renowned for a heroic rescue in which he used his hood to save workers trapped in a tunnel system filled with fumes. He is credited as the first African-American in Cleveland to own an automobile.

As I'm seeing is the norm, you've misconstrued my words. The "fun" that is/was to be had is playing the race card...not suffering through a natural disaster.

Sorry, but that's nothing like a traffic light, no purty colored lights a'tall.

The Morgan traffic signal was a T-shaped pole unit that featured three hand-cranked positions: Stop, Go and an all-directional stop position. This third position halted traffic in all directions to allow pedestrians to cross streets more safely. Its one advantage over others of its type was the ability to operate it from a distance using a mechanical linkage. Morgan sold the rights to his traffic signal to the General Electric Corporation for $40,000.
