This topic came about from the Abortion thread in which I had this comment:

It just occurred to me that if is not a man's right to have an opinion on this, then why should they even be "required" to support the baby if the woman decides to keep the baby instead? Its a double standard I think.

What do you think? If it is a woman's choice and she then decides to keep the child, should a man still be liable to pay for his or her upbringing as well?

I think that is one of the reasons that for a while here, pro lifers here in CA were trying to get a bill passed that if a woman wanted an abortion, the father of the baby had to sign too. This would have helped limit a lot of abortions because a lot of times the father of the baby doesn't even want the mother to abort. We lost this victory by only a margin.

Yes, he still got her pregnant, he still should take responsibility. But it would be more consistent if we had the rule mentioned in my previous post.

I don't get it either- a sign of the times I suppose- society attempting to diminish the man's role/responsibility. (yes I am a female!)[;)]

It's a huge double-standard... But of course it doesn't remove the responsibility... God more than frowns on those who don't provide...

I absolutely believe that men should have a say--father or not.

If a man fathers a child, he should have a say in whether the mother has an abortion, gives the baby up for adoption or decides to keep it. Should she keep it, he should be responsible both financially and emotionally for raising the child. (This is all hinging on pregnancy out of wedlock.)

Regardless, it is ridiculous to say the opinions of men should not be considered in the abortion debate. It appears some women have forgotten that sperm is necessary to get pregnant. [8|]

Part of the problem I can see with this is that paternity might have to be proven before he can legitimately be forced to be a cosigner of the abortion.

And, at that point, the potential parents are not even on speaking terms. Forcing them to deal with the such an agreement already causes more legal problems. My solution would be to outlaw abortions.

They jointly made the decision to hit the sack together, so they are jointly responsible, unless there was rape, statutory rape, or incest. In those cases, the law-breaker should be in jail, whether male or female.

But should the male have a say in whether or not the female has an abortion? If the laws were not so sexist, they would, but we live in a world that is sexist, and right now, by law, men have little say in certain circumstances.
