Help, help, help!

When I use the common computer translators to translate this, I get an absolutely hilarious mess! Can you help me with these signs?

In English, sign 1:
Please place all toilet paper in the toilet and flush.
In English, sign 2:
Wrap used sanitary napkins in toilet paper and place in trash.
In English, sign 3:
Please clean the toilet seat and lid.

I need each sign in Spanish.

Put a large trash can in the stall and that should help.

What's more important is that you understand the culture. There are septic problems in several countries around the globe and just get used to it because they can't flush the paper. It's just as odd to them that we need to flush the paper.

Want to know a hilarious story? My son and I were traveling in my car one day when a used strip of toilet paper STUCK to the hood of my car!!!! It was covered with poo! It flapped in the breeze like a flag announcing, "I live in Mexico!" We laughed so hard. Finally, I had to pull over and my son pulled it out. What state are you living in?

Oh, we have a pretty good understanding of what some of the people have gone through , but they are in the U.S. now, and there are laws and sanitation issues here. This is going on in a church, and we need to take care of the problem.

We can't just put a large can in each stall; the stalls are small. We need the signs because the janitorial help is going nuts! This has been going on for way too long -- years!

We need translations for each of the signs.

The problem is that Spanish varies so much from region to region (even within the same country) that what might work with one dialect will not make sense for another. For example there are about 10 different words for "toilet"

Anyhow, you'd probably do best to get someone local who could translate for you. Do any of the janitors speak Spanish? Do you know what area the majority of the people you are writing this for are from? Here is my best attempt, but Spanish isn't my first language, so take it as you will. At the very least, have someone who knows what they're talking about look it over!

In English, sign 1:
Please place all toilet paper in the toilet and flush.

Favor de poner todo el papel sanitario en el inodoro y [I can't remember how to say flush!]

In English, sign 2:
Wrap used sanitary napkins in toilet paper and place in trash.

In English, sign 3:
Please clean the toilet seat and lid.

Take it as you will. Believe it or not, I've never had to say "sanitary napkin" in Mexico, so it's not on my list of high frequency words

Oh, and I never use online translators for anything other than a good laugh

It's called hygienic paper and you forgot to conjugate your verbs...if they've had Spanish people in their church for years she's going about this all wrong. They need to go and talk to one of the Spanish ladies and have them tell the others and make a sign if they need one.

Que Pena!

For toilet paper or for sanitary pads? I've always heard "papel de baño" or "papel sanitario" for toilet paper (or just "papel" if the context is clear). I can imagine that "papel higénico" is correct as well, depending on where you are. Ay, this is the problem with Spanish!

quote:

you forgot to conjugate your verbs...

With "favor de..." you do not conjugate the verb. For exampe, "favor de no fumar," but with "por favor" you do conjugate the verb. As in "por favor, cierre la puerta." (or "cierra la puerta" if you are using the informal imperative)

Thank you, everyone! One way or another, we will come up with the right words!

Just to explain the dynamics of my problem, I work for the English-speaking church. The English-speaking church allows two other congregations to use the facility, both of which are not native to the U.S. On a Sunday, for example, the English-speaking congregation has their services. At a set time afterward, another congregation has theirs, and at a set time after their services are over, the Spanish-speaking congregation has theirs. Then throughout the week, the congregations have their specific times for evening activities.

The congregations each do their own services and only come together for one service, all at once, once a year. Each congregation is a completely separate entity, and congregations rarely really even see one another. I see them the most, being an employee of the English-speaking congregation. The pastor of the English-speaking congregation, however, has monthly meetings with the pastors of the other congregations.

Understanding a little of the dynamics of this Spanish-speaking people, it is difficult for their male pastor to take care of this problem. Further complicating things, when I try to communicate, I never know that we have an understanding. In fact, indications are that verbally-given ideas are not understood. Even when I have used a human translator, I learned that the young lady, because of the dynamics of this group, was telling me what i wanted to hear and telling them what they wanted to hear: a total break-down in communication.

Therefore, all such communication from my office is done in short notes or by signs that are all written in both English and Spanish. The other congregation reads and understands English and complies very well.

Thus, I appreciate all your notes, helping me. Very much!

Regarding Babelfish, I have tried them but more recently have used another online translator. Even it, in this circumstance is impossible!!

To overcome my translation problems (as much as can be done using an online translator), I first input my English words and retrieve the Spanish translation. Then I input the Spanish translation, to see what I get back in Engish.

"Please place all toilet paper in the toilet and flush" comes back as "Place please every role of washroom in the washroom and clean." And when I tried various versions of the above, I got even more ridiculous translations. I finally gave up and came here!

How about I type you a note to give to the Spanish lady or pastor.

It will be a great offense and not understood if you do not go through the proper channels and have it come from one of the members in the church.

This note states God bless you and what a blessing they are. The English church is there to serve them. You are delighted to share this building that the Lord has given to you with them.

Please let everyone know that the American laws do not allow us to throw away our toilet paper in the trash and only the napkins should be put in the trash. Could the Spanish church please help us take care of the restrooms? We are one body and always want to be a blessing to everyone with this building the Lord has given us for His glory. Could you also put up signs in both the men and women's restrooms.

Thank you so much and go forward in the things of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

I think that is a great start, as a note to the congregation! I will need to shorten it, though, because I have learned over the years there that the shorter the note, the more likely it will be read. I still also need to shorten it to a simple sign, because the janitorial service has made the request for such a sign. I feel so bad for them, because they really . . . well, you know.

I really appreciate this!

Artemis and Funny_girl:

When I wrote above that I would be giving the note to the "congregation," my intention was to give the note to the pastor of the congregation and let him take care of it. The signs, however, will be placed in the ladies' restrooms.

This is what I did for the signs:
In English, sign 1:

In English, sign 2:

In English, sign 3:

Then the letter is merely shortened a little but mainly as you suggested.
Does all this seem all right?

And thank you both so much for your help!!!

Even if they're not worded 100% correctly, I think they'll get the gist.

Makes sense to me! Just a note... "inodoro" is the word that I use for toilet, but "retrete" is also a pretty common use, too. I'm not sure which one is more universally understood. I thought about that after I wrote my original post. Or, as funny_girl translated it, "taza" is the toilet bowl, so that might be a better word choice.

Thank you!

So change sign 1 to:
Favor de poner todo el papel sanitario en el taza y tirar de la cadena.
?

Also, I changed sign 3 to
Esté por favor seguro el
asiento de lavabo y cobertura es
limpia para la próxima persona.

Does that get the idea of "Please keep the toilet seat and cover clean
for the next person."
?

Oh, yes. And I put them all on one sign and made it pretty. They can still be changed.

la taza. And since I don't know how to say "flush," I have no idea if "tirar de la cadena" is correct or not. I'll just assume it is

quote:

Esté por favor seguro el
asiento de lavabo y cobertura es
limpia para la próxima persona.

This one doesn't make sense to me, but that doesn't mean it's wrong I would just say "favor de limpiar el asiento y tapa para la próxima persona." ( or "por favor, limpie" instead of "favor de limpiar")

Please place all toilet paper in the toilet and flush.

Wrap used sanitary napkins in toilet paper and place in trash:

Envuelva las servilletas sanitarias en papel higiénico y coloque en la basura.

Please clean the toilet seat and lid:

Por favor limpie el asiento y la tapa de tocador.

Hope this helps,
Danny

Just pick something and go with it. Even within Mexico, there are different ways to say things. I was teaching English to kids one summer in Mexico and we were going over clothing words. When I taught them "sandals," I put the word "sandalias" up on the board for the Spanish and my students laughed at me and told me that no one said sandalias... everyone said chanclas. I drove across town to teach my afternoon class and used chanclas for sandals. Those students laughed at me and told me that no one said chanclas... everyone said sandalias When I went further south, no one used chanclas or sandalias... they said guaraches.

Seriously, though, people will understand things that aren't necessarily what they would say. If you told me you were "drinking a pop on the couch in the den," I'd understand you just find even though I would say you were "drinking a coke on the sofa in the living room." English is just as bad as Spanish, we just don't think about it. And I've seen enough signs in America that were written in horrific Spanish that I think you'll be understood even if you're just close

Well, I just appreciate all the help! Thank you, all of you, so much!

I made my signs and put them in the janitor's mailbox -- one type printed in one color; the other in another color.

I think that the signs, with the suggested letter to the pastors, will help, if not do the trick!

Only put toilet paper in the toilet. This is not a delicate issue. We women get it. It's universal.

I needed to send another letter, this time to both of the congregations that the church I work for allows to use the building. For the Spanish-speaking congregation, this is the letter I wrote for them.

Would anyone like to tell me if it makes sense, if it works, or should I just quit trying to use the free online translators?

quote:

July 1, 2008
Dear Pastors:

(my name), Administrative Assistant (Ayudante Administrativo)

And thank you So Much!!!
