Let me preface this whole thing by saying I am no expert on KISS and I'm not even really familiar with their work aside from the songs that were at the top of the charts, but my observation is this:

For all their "scary" appearance and stage presence, their music is pretty tame. Am I wrong? [:)]

freakofnature -> RE: KISS (6/19/2008 10:39:22 AM)

No, not so much, Songs like "Lick it Up" "Heaven's on Fire" and "Domino" and most of every other Kiss song has pretty explicit lyrical content. I am no fan of Kiss, they are juevinile delinquents in 60 year old bodies.

gambit -> RE: KISS (6/19/2008 10:41:12 AM)

They were a real concern for the parents of kids during the 70's
There was a movie called Detroit Rock City and the parents portrayed in that movie were not that far off of being the real ordeal.

Never was a big KISS fan, but those first two live records are KILLER!!

Tame for then or tame for now? Lyrically or musically?

I say not but I hadn't thought about it until now. The messages to the fans in the "Alive" liner notes are very suggestive of sex, S&M (Gene Simmons and his boots) etc.

Were you a fan 30 years ago?

30 years ago my friend... I was 4! I tried to get into Kiss when I was in my teens and "Crazy Nights" came out... I just never have ever thought that their musicianship was all that special, and I hadn't much thought about the juvenile lyrics. Just overall ridiculous.

I was 8. I liked "Beth" when I was 8.

I think many "Kissheads" would consider that their worst album. That or "The Eldar" but "The Eldar" was totally different from normal Kiss.

I like some Kiss but they definitely are style over substance.

Now you're trying to make me think. I guess for now. I don't take issue with their abilities to perform musically, but I'm thinking back to when I was a kid and how out there they seemed. Lyrically, now, I wonder what the big deal was. Someone enlighten me.

(I guess now I think their makeup and theatrics were the most interesting thing about them.)

Rufas2000 -> RE: KISS (6/19/2008 11:47:46 AM)

It definitely was the makeup, theatrics and image that scared people. Musically they were compotent I guess. Lyrically they were at most not much different than any 70s hard rock group.

Alice Cooper was definitely way more disturbing lyrically (challenging base assumptions on life) and different musically (with all the nods to musicals and theatre).

I mention that because they both staked their reps on image and "shock rock".

doinkdom -> RE: KISS (6/19/2008 11:49:13 AM)

IMO, and being a teenager during their hayday...KISS is tame especially in comparison to the Marilyn Mansion's and Rob Zombie's of today.

I get a kick out the couple of times I've watched Family Jewels and the interaction between Gene Simmons and his mother...very funny.

WHTim -> RE: KISS (6/19/2008 3:47:35 PM)

I love KISS period.
In my opinion they are more than a band but rather an experience.
They were the right thing for the right time in history and I venture to say there will never be a phenomenon like them again.

mapachito13 -> RE: KISS (6/19/2008 4:14:55 PM)

I'm a big KISS fan! Member of the KISS army in grade school (remember them?) I liked their music! Plenty of hooks in the music but as far as how hard their music was ...

They were rockers but I agree that their look was harder than their sound. Although live they cranked it up a notch plus that show with the pyrotechnics and smoke (oh, and the infamous blood)! Compared with Judas Priest, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Motorhead (late seventies), Black Sabbath, The Who, and other bands they sounded like pop rock.
