What is he trying to do is not specifically target McCain but some GOP groups or supporters who would try to use race. Just like in 2000 election, some in the GOP, who supported bush implied McCain had illegitimate "black" child. So he is preempting some who would use any scare tactics to woo those who would support Obama.

The whole thing is actually pretty insulting to the general public though. Obama seems to think that a lot of people would be afraid of him because he has a "funny name" and "he's black"?

Why doesn't he just say he thinks the country is made up of a bunch of ignorant racists? The meaning is the same.

Because when we were going through the primary time.........people thought he was muslim because of his name......and people in the South showed their true colors.

You would have a point about being insulted if it weren't for the fact that many people (especially some on these boards) still believe that he's a muslim or that he will somehow subjugate the white race if he becomes president. It's along the same lines as those who believe he will somehow single-handedly eradicate our democratic system and replace it with socialism or marxism.

Unfortunately, some people will believe whatever they hear or are told and won't be convinced by the facts.

I don't see this as "playing the race card" at all.

An example of "playing the race card" is a defendant claiming he was singled out because he was black, and not because he had drugs on his person. Or that a store won't give someone a refund because they are asian, even though the refund policy is clearly stated on the receipt. Or someone claiming that they didn't get a job because they are white and lost out because of affirmative action.

He's playing the race card every time he represents himself as black and a savior to minorities. And he knows it's politically expedient--there are many people in our church who are extremely conservative, and supported Bush whole heartedly the last two elections but feel like they just have to vote for America's first black president, no matter if his politics run completely counter to their own.

It's amazing to me how people of every race cling so tightly to that "one drop rule" (if your great-grandma was black, even though everyone else in your family line was white, you're "black"), which originated as a way to *oppress* them. [8|]

U know for a fact these people are voting for him ONLY becuz of his color?????

Have u had hearts to hearts with them, and that is what they have said........the grand thing of living here is choice.......being able to choose for oneself what is better for yourself.

Just a thought........maybe they dont want to be in Iraq for another 100 years........or maybe they want something done w/No Child Left Behind.........or w/preschool for families that cant make it on one income.........or a whole myriad of reasons!

Seriously though, let's get real. Some people, none in this forum but some people in those forums across the street, actually yearn for someone to call them a racist. Kinda validates their Christian conservatism. Like you're not a REAL conservative until a liberal, preferably a black liberal, calls you a racist. That's your rite of passage, so to speak, into the ultra-right wing conservative dimension of the political galaxy.

In fact, you so want people to call you a racist, that after all the baiting fails, you just pretend someone called you one, or make up scenarios where, if you fit the scenario you make up, you can consider yourself a racist and move to the next dimension.

For example. Pretending that if you don't vote for Obama someone will call you a racist, even though they haven't, they must be thinking it. Pretending that because you criticized Obama, that makes you a racist, although no one called you one, still, somebody probably wanted to. Or pretending that people think you're a racist because you're a republican.

I'm glad we don't have people like that in this forum.

I said this months ago. Any attack on his policy fronts will be characterized as racist, any questioning of his character or lack thereof will be blamed on race, and if he somehow loses, it will be solely because of America's racism, and will have nothing to do with the rejection of his ideas. And, heavens to betsy, if he wins, that is completely how he'll "govern" too.

It would be very interesting to see the mainstream media have to deal with the sort of kid gloves this candidate requires, except for the fact that all of the major media is completely in the bag for him already based solely on ideology and identity politics.
