I agree, I would love to have my mom's old Kenmore back. It was the best machine!

I have a Singer now and it makes me crazy with the bunching up and such. Very moody

Mine did the bunching up on the bottom thing until I took it in and had it serviced. From what I've been told its typically a tension issue.

So, I bought a *very* old Kenmore machine. I need to have Micah bring it in the house so I can fiddle with it and maybe find a manual online. It was the sewing machine of a 65 yo ladies step father, so I'm guess it's about 30-50years old. I didn't ask... Anyway, he was a tailor so it's a great machine and it came with all sorts of neat things. It's also mounted in a sewing table and has the cutest little chair!

Oh, and I was doing the today! I basically have a serger!!!

Yay!
The sewing table is awesome too. Dh's uncle's mom had a little sewing table that I want, even though I'm not sure where I'd put it. For info on the machine, try the sewing forums at craftster.org- there are lots of knowledgeable people there. I think my favorite game is trying to figure out what all of the different feet I have are for.

Yep...mine needs to be serviced pretty bad

My mom's old machine was mounted in a sewing table - it was awesome cause you could set it anywhere when you weren't using it and the top folded down to use like a regular table.

..... my mom has an older machine, too... it is heavy... which is very nice for sewing... the weight keeps it from moving around the table when she is trying to sew odd stuff...

She tried my newer one... and doesn't like it!

I have an entire stack of things on my sewing table to make. I am waiting on parts for one of them, but it's all cut and as much sewn as possible. I also have a tote bag, a laptop sleeve, and a baby carrier for myself that need to be cut.

HERE is a cute knot bag pattern. They are super easy and don't take much fabric.

Handbags! Fun, fun, fun... all shapes, sizes, and colors! Right now I am just playing and experimenting, but I love it.

Next up, skirts, I think.... Or pajamas... I have a couple ideas for both. Right now my favorite spots for inspiration are Sew, Mama, Sew and www.Etsy.com. It's so cool to see what other people are making!!

I'm still working on purses. I'm also considering making a reusable grocery bag since one of ours ripped across the bottom and probably isn't sturdy enough to use anymore. I'm thinking about taking it apart to make a pattern, but I don't think I have any fabric stiff enough to get the shape right (like a paper grocery bag), so I'd rather make more of a sack/tote bag type shape.

Claire -- you CAN'T go wrong with a cute throw pillow!!! Make a few for your house, make some for your friends, etc. until you get the hang of the machine.

Stacy -- you asked last page about closing a seam like on a beanbag? On things like that (like pillows) I sew all the way around, then on the remaining side I leave open a hole just large enough for stuffing, then I fold the edges inside and kind of whip stitch it down inside, not on the outside. It's hard to explain, I might have to take a pick of something I just recently made.

I most recently made a pillow for Isabel's bed, with a Tinkerbell pillowcase to go over it. She loves it! It's just her size.

I actually just found a tutorial for sewing a seam down like I need to. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks like it should work. It was here.

I LOVE to sew! My mom used to own a sewing machine store, so I got a great floor model when she closed it.

I just got married and my new MIL gave me a stack of beautiful quilt blocks that her mother (I think) gave her. The fabric dates to the Depression. My challenge is to find fabric to do sashings, borders, and backing fabric. I'd love to hand-quilt it myself but I'm a newly wed with a little bit of college still to finish. I'll see once I get the quilt top done.

After that, baby clothes We've got a few years but it's fun to start planning.

Sarah - don't forget about my Mai Tai!!

I don't really know how to sew all that well. The last thing I made were wipes for Gwen =)

I would love to make some of these nursing shirts - this lady's got great tutorials ... see here and here. Alas, I'm not sure I could do it right! I'm hoping when my mom learns her new machine (she bought a new Janome that also does embroidery!) sometime in September she'll make them for me =)

I taught myself how to sew on my grandmothers machine. It is an older Singer, maybe from the 70's or 80's. That is the only machine I have ever used. It doesn't do all the fancy stitches but works for my needs. I am trying to sew a bonnet for my dd. It is the first I have ever tried. I usually sew jumpers and skirts for me and my girls. I have also done bloomers and such. Most things I don't have a pattern for. I just take something I already have a sew up something close to that.

..... this is wonderful!

It only hit me a few years ago.... that it's okay not to be 'correct' while sewing.... if it works for me (or you!) it works!

Of course.... my mom was horrified to find out that I deviated from a dress pattern once....

I got my sewing machine out today for the first time since Zaphyn was born. We're making more costumes for people (some for family, some being sold online). I also have some other items on the go too. So my list is:

-2 "Jedi"stlye robes
-Avatar Aang costume
-receiving blankets
-large purse

I just finished the wedding dress & 3 attendent dresses that I started earlier. I think the mother of the bride is going to want a dress also. She told me she has not found one she likes so far.

This thread also inspired me to sign up for serger lessons...I have a great serger (so I am told) that has never been out of the box, and I got it for Christmas 2006. I have used another serger before, but I am afraid of mine for some reason.
