I believe I clearly deserve a raise, based on the compensation structure of my employer, my new responsibilities, and my success.

If you truely feel this way this ask for the raise, but don't be suprised at not getting it or being let go for asking.

Also do not let your other "Ministry" efforts cause you to expect a raise at your current position you are at at the "Headquarters".

I am sure the "Headquarters" has a pay scale basis that is on performance, senoirity, etc. of work at that place.

Thanks
RC

<sigh> Why do I get the impression you're one of the those people it's impossible to "win" with?

I do not expect a raise at work because of my volunteering in my church. I only mentioned my volunteer service because you asked why I thought I shouldn't have to work a second job to support myself in ministry. I do work a job to support myself, it just happens to be ministry-related. However, just because I get a salary for ministry work doesn't mean I love Jesus and his church less than those who don't get paid. I also volunteer in my local church.

As all/most have said I would look at the rate other in the same or abut the same are getting paided.

If only I knew what that was. I think I'm paid near the top of the "Class B" employee level. I know I make more than the other "Class B" employees in my department. I also know I'm on the same pay grade as an employee in another department, who has a job with similar, but fewer, responsibilities to my old job.

The thing is, I don't do "Class B" employee level work any more. At my job analysis meeting the other day with the HR head, we kept haggling over the language in my new job description. At one point, it said I assist the "Class A" employee in another department with one of my key projects. But I don't assist that person; that person assists me. The HR head agrees (and so does the other colleague), but HR is clearly bothered by the idea that I call the shots on the project with the "Class A" employee's assistance. This colleague is above me in pay grade, yet I work with him in the exact same way I work with my employee.

To me, the best times to ask for a raise are before you take the job (ok, too late for that one), and at your regularly scheduled review. You're kind of stuck between the two at the moment. 6 weeks might be a tad early to actually ask, but it's not to early to start assembling data. The 6 month point might be a bit more appropriate - people by then have had the chance to see you perform over time.

Lay out all the data ahead of time - what's the increase in your hrs worked, what's the income lost due to leaving the second job, plus all the other reasons you can think of & have listed here.

The more hard data you can provide (hrs worked, people managed, deadlines met, etc) the better off you are. Other than that:

Ask humbly,
Be prepared to hear "no",
Be well prepared for the discussion,
Practice the discussion on someone outside the organization before you go.

That seems like good advice. I don't intend to make it sound like a demand, more of a "my job description is being revised. I think it also needs to be reclassified, with an appropriate pay increase of x%. Is that something you can help me with?"

Most of the time, in my experience, people are only paid in churches for things that either (a) require a substantial time commitment or (b) they can't find anyone to volunteer to do.

I just had to come back and add a third scenario as an afterthought. Another reason people in churches get paid is when the church desires and can afford a professional in an area where a volunteer might not do as good of a job.

And my job would fall into that category. It pays more than the other "Class B" jobs because it requires greater skill and training. It's also much more stressful, with constant, competing deadlines to deliver resources that will be effective in raising funds. Helping with VBS or teaching our young adults class at church requires some time and effort, but my job demands results. Volunteers may be committed, but they are still just volunteers; you can't tell them "no, that's not good enough" repeatedly and still expect them to show up. With employees, you can. :)

Yep, that's true!
