Yep, its a copyright church. And yes, we pay copyright fees. How are these people who are making this good music will make a living if their royalties are not paid?

Most of the points I would have made in response are well covered already. When the church I was attending moved from hymnals to an overhead projector I remember the discussions about the fees. I have no problem with the fees and I don't think that calling it stealing is too harsh. I remember all the rationalizing I heard about the video licensing when we decided we needed that too. One person argued strenuously that since we were not charging to view the videos and we had paid for the DVD's we were OK. I told them to read the FBI warning and explain to me how it means everyone but a church. Too funny.

quote:
ORIGINAL: Covaan_Meshuga They would have thought it especially funny when someone had dropped in, noted that there was no license number(s), and reported it. All it takes is one knowledgeable but disgruntled person -- or a representative secretly sent to the services. There are secret worshipers that attend services then write reviews on churches for an Internet site -- so why not? Besides, how did we hear about the first ones who got caught? Someone had to have come and told. Sorry I'm OT, but there is a site that writes reviews written by covert worshippers? LOL! I don't mean to laugh. I believe you, but isn't that par for this consumer mindset we have about church. Sad. BTW, would you mind giving me the website. Thanks.

Yep! I believe it originated somewhere in Europe, so most of the posts are on churches around there, but there are some in the States as well. I tried to find my info about it before I wrote the post to you, but I couldn't find it for some reason. I am a member, but I just couldn't bring myself to start doing it!! Besides, I like my sleep on Sunday mornings. I think it was just called "secret worshipers" or "secret worshippers." Basically, one visits the church and joins in their worship. After the service is over, before leaving, one leaves a business card at the church which informs them that they have been visited by an official secret worshiper. There is a series of basic questions one is to answer immediately after visiting a new church, then the report is written and submitted.

Ah! I was using the wrong name for the search! A quotation from their site: quote:
What is this? Since ancient times (ok, 1998), Ship of Fools has been sending Mystery Worshippers to churches worldwide. Travelling incognito, they ask those questions which go to the heart of church life: How long was the sermon? How hard the pew? How cold was the coffee? How warm the welcome? The only clue they have been there at all is the Mystery Worshipper calling card, dropped discreetly into the collection plate. http://ship-of-fools.com/mystery/index.html

The church we attend does have the CCLI licence. But here's a question for you about my former church (from my childhood): They have had the same hymnals for ages ... most (at least 85%) of the hymns in there are definitely classed as "public domain". That being said, all of the hymnals are printed in a standard sized font (they didn't have the option of buying a large print edition, as there wasn't one available at the time ... not sure if there is one now) One of the congregational members who was a retired teacher, donated an overhead projector so they could post the lyrics for those who had trouble reading the smaller print. Would this be classed as a copyright violation?? (For the record, they did get the CCLI licence as well, just to make sure they were covered) But had they not purchased the CCLI, would it be an issue??

public domain is free of copyright issues.

It definitely is an issue for those who make any copies of any songs/writings/etc. that are not public domain.
