Sing2him -> The Hopper's use of video in concert... (6/30/2008 7:00:50 PM)

I attended a concert by the Hoppers last night (which was awesome, by the way) and I noticed that they use a lot of video footage during their performance. i thought it was great. They edited in footage from some live concert DVD's that they had for sale plus some Gaither videos during their live performance of particular songs. The tracks were all synced up. At first, I thought it was a little cheesy and wierd, but then it kind of grew on me. The first song they did this to was "The Ride". The video they used had clips of Ronnie Hinson (writer/producer) writing and performing the demo, and then eventually he even sang a part with them via the accompaniment track and video. I thought it was neat. They also used a lot of video during "Jerusalem". I couldn't decide if I wanted to watch them onstage, or actually singing in the holy land on the video screen.

I was wondering if anyone has seen them do this or if any other groups out there were using similar means of media. And if so, what do you guys think about it?

We saw the Hoppers last year and they were using video in their 50th anniversary concerts. Karen Peck & New River uses videos sometimes.

Saw same thing with Hoppers Sat night. Amazing how in sync everything is. I like it. 2nd time to see this used by them.

I have seen the Hoppers several times, but not since they have been doing the footage in concerts. But I do have their 50th Anniversary DVDs where they used it a lot and I think it is great!

I like it in moderation (which the Hoppers do).

Yeah, I think I'm the same way. I've not ever seen it overused (obviously, since this was my first exposure to this kind of media usage in concerts), but I think it could definitely become distracting if overly utilized. The Hoppers sprinkled it in only a few times during the concert. There was always something on the screen, but more times than not, it was only a basic moving background or a peaceful video loop. They did have a flag waving throughout a patriotic song that they performed (I'm not sure what song it was. I hadn't heard it before, but it sure was good!!!). All in all, i think it was tasteful and subtle.

I saw them Sat. night...I liked the use of the video on "The Ride" but found it distracting on the rest.

I've seen Karen peck & New River use some video at concert last fall. Didn't bother me but it wasn't neccessary. I would have just as happy to hear them sing if the video wasn't used.

Carroll Roberson used video before his concert as the auditorium was filling But not during the concert. Basically playing one of his DVDs shot in the Rocky Mtns. So people that arrived early got an extra 45 minutes of his music. But since he sang for nearly 2 hours no one should have felt shortchanged if they hadn't used the video. Might have helped him sell a few more DVDs though. The scenery in the video was gorgeous.

I have seen the Hoppers use the video at least three times, and I was very pleased with it.

I particularly like The Ride video, though it's not my favorite song.

The Hoppers have been useing video for at least 3 years that I know of. I have seen it many time. In fact Saturday night was the 3rd time I have seen it in 2008 alone. I like it very much.

I saw the Hoppers over a month ago and it was (2) hours of music with no video. Of course, I have seen them many times use the video. I don't mind either way.

I saw them in January and they didnt use it. I am unsure if I would prefer it but then again, when I go to a Church service, the singing is kinda in back of mind and any video would not even be thought about.

You ain't jokin'!!! As someone who dabbles in video editing, I know that what they were showing sunday night was incredibly difficult to pull off.

And I was struck by the way that Kim sings the songs exactly like the recordings and DVD's. That's tough to do. She is definitely a PRO!!!

HigherNote4U -> RE: The Hopper's use of video in concert... (7/1/2008 3:42:55 PM)

I have only seen the Hoppers in concert once and I really enjoyed them and the video footage. I know that the Talley Trio and as someone else mentioned Karen Peck and New River do the same. I think that used in moderation if really helps push the emotional side of certain songs. When Karen Peck sings "Four Days Late" with the video about Lazarus' story it is really touching. The same can be said for the Talley Trio singing "His Life For Mine" to clips from the movie "The Passion of The Christ". There isn't a dry eye in the building by the end of that song when the video is accompanying it.

Note: I want to also add that the one time that I saw the Hoppers I was blown away by one major thing. Dean was having some serious issues with his microphone. It kept cutting in and out and making popping noises. He eventually walked back and traded mics with Mike and kept singing. As someone else said, when they sing it sounds just like the CD. I thought that they were slammed with stacked vocals on their tracks, but when Dean's mic would cut out, his voice completely left the sound until the mic would start working again. That amazed me because every really good pro group that I personally have ever heard uses a lot of stacks. I know that there are a few out there that can pull it off without them, but I've never had the chance to see them live.
