ORIGINAL: GrahamCracker Something is funny here. If he's addicted, why did the doctor put him back on it? Were they not communicating with the doctor that there was an addiction problem? Larry, I'm sorry to tell you that doctors (not all but too many) are a big part of the problem. It can take as little as three days to become addicted to Oxycontin and too often they do not tell families how very powerful this drug can be. This quick addiction is my second time to see this happen with some friends. Another friend of ours had back surgery, and when they put him on Oxycontin and didn't really give him and his wife instructions about how very powerful it is, he quickly (meaning about 5-6 days) developed an addiction to it, and within a couple of weeks, he flipped out and had to be confined in a mental hospital. While he was there, his wife kept saying it was the drug, and it took two weeks for the doctors to listen to her. It was a nightmare, and I will never forget my husband and I visiting our friend in the mental hospital, and he did not recognize his wife or any family (including his three kids) much less us. A few weeks later he ended up in a rehab unit to be weaned off of it. After he began to be weaned, he started to recognize his wife, and today, he is dumbfounded by what happend but glad to know it can happen and he should be leary of drugs even if they're prescribed by his doctor. At the time this happened, his wife was completely at a loss and not able to do a lot because he had not been officially declared incompetent. He could still talk and act coherent at times. So she could not make decisions for him as if he were out cold. Again, it was a like a nightmare. It was like being hit by a car you didn't see coming. I knew this could happen with this drug, but I thought of it as pretty rare and therefore figured this was an isolated case. Now, I have another friend who appears to be headed down the same path, and all with the assistance of his physician. His wife is very frustrated, but she now knows not to completely get rid of the pills and to push for him to be weaned. BTW, he's only been taking the drug for about 2-1/2 weeks, and his situation has deteriorated so quickly, it would make your head swim. This is a person who doesn't drink or smoke, is a strong Christian who is usually joyful and peaceful, and yet this drug has completely changed his personality, and he's a jittery mess, and that only took about 10-12 days. If it's not obvious, I'm not a big fan of Oxycontin, and I'm really not a fan of family doctors or even orthopedic surgeons prescribing the med. They simply don't know enough about it to prescribe it or they are derelict in describing it and not advising the family of its strength. I'm just sickhearted that people can stumble into this addiciton. The reason I put up the thread is to hear from others who may have experienced this very quick addiction.
