The days of Gourmet "this" and Premium "that" appear to be over or at least on a serious downward spiral as Starbucks is planning to close 600 of it's company owned stores nationwide. Story HERE

I think this could be a dangerous time for America as caffeine-starved fiends rove our streets looking for a fix, moaning, "Beeeeeans..must have beans!"

Gas or overpriced and overrated coffee????? People can buy a pound of good coffee for a little bit more than the average priced coffee at Starbucks. I found pure Kona coffee for $6 at World Market the other day.

You can't walk down the street without tripping over one, so I'm not all that surprised frankly, the market is swamped with them. Especially when the economy is a tad shaky, things like fancy coffee drinks tend to be the first thing chipped out of the budget (in fact, I've watched about 5 news segments on "how to save money" in the past couple weeks and EVERY SINGLE ONE had "stop buying coffee at Starbucks" in its top 10 suggestions).

Well they are everywhere, plus there are kiosks in tons of places like Kroger, so its not like you can't get one if you need one. Coffee drinkers know what I mean. I like McDonald's coffee better. But there are a lot of competitors to starbucks, I can literally get a coffee on every corner if I wanted too.

I like McDonalds coffee as well. They've been making it better these last couple of years or so. And their iced coffee is really good.

I wonder if this was planned from the start - completely saturate the market and develop an incredibly strong customer base and brand identity, then prune back the less successful stores so that you can maximize your profit margin with the others. -Dan.

I think it's just that they've been losing customers. Could be wrong though!

We buy Starbucks coffee to make at home--super duper cost-effective. And I don't know about where you live, but we can buy that Starbucks coffee at Wal-Mart and it's about the same price as any other. Starbucks is everywhere, so I can't see that it would make much difference to close some stores.

I never got the appeal, myself. And I think their practice of setting up across from small, independent coffee shops is disgraceful. We have one about to open in a small, quaint town. Tara P

We have three local coffee shops and none of them were harmed by the influx of Starbucks. Now we just have more coffee shops.

Thank God I never saw the attraction to spending $4.00+ for a cup of liquid beans! Some would say that your aren't paying $4.00 for a cup of "liquid beans" but rather paying $4.00 for the right and privelage of calling yourself an elitist snob who can drink a $4.00 cup of "liquid beans." I will say, however, that I do enjoy a good flavorfull cup of coffee, and while my wife manages a Starbucks, we prefer another brand of coffee which if I name here may be a violation of TOS

The Starbucks closest to my house actually has a "coffee of the day" that costs a dollar for the 16 oz. size. That's cheaper than some fast food restaurants.

ORIGINAL: WesP Heh, heh! I can brew a full pot of Folgers or Maxwell House every morning for about .35 or .40. Pity they are closing! Blah, that stuff tastes about as good as putting an old pair of socks in the coffee maker. I don't get coffee out that often, but will readily admit that most of it tastes better than anything I have at home.
