No, they did not have the problem I did 25 years prior. I was there pretty much by myself and was an extreme loner; whereas the girls were all there together (3 of them) and my son always had LOTS of friends.

K -- public kindergarten in OK, then we moved to inner-city St. Louis, went there for a few weeks, mom and dad were afraid sending me into a big scary school all by myself every day and pulled me out to homeschool and really got bullied by the school system for it (homeschooling wasn't popular yet in the 80s, LOL)

K-5th grade -- homeschooled

5th grade -- attended public school in Owasso, OK, this was the year my youngest brother was born (that made 4) and it was a little overwhelming for my mom homeschooling 2 older children and having 2 other little bitty ones, so I went to public for a year

6th-7th grade -- homeschooled

8th grade -- went back to public school in OK, Mom and Dad decided to send us public at that grade level so we'd get the most from our upper-level subjects. They later decided that wasn't best, and homeschooled my 2 youngest brothers all the way through, neither of them have ever attended public school.

9th-12th -- we moved to small-town MO and my brother and I went to public high school. I graduated in the top 5 and got a full academic scholarship to the local community college. I also attended community college my senior year, concurrent enrollment, since I had all my credits.

Attended community college for a year. Got married summer before freshman year of college.

Hubby and I moved to Oklahoma City and I attended a private Bible college for 2 years, got my Associate Degree

I finished my last 2 years at the University of Oklahoma and graduated with my Bachelor Degree.

I was sent to a private preschool, but I was kicked out after about two weeks. (I believe my next sister down went for two years, though)

I went to public school from then on--K and 1st in a school that was then shut down (and the district regretted that later!). Then 2nd through 4th at another public grade school, then transferred to a third for 5th grade so I could be in GATE (here they put one GATE class, by graduating year, in each grade school, and the teachers rotate yearly). Back to the 2nd school for 6th (because I was very unhappy in GATE), then two years in what was then a Junior High and is now, that my sister is going, a Middle School, then 3.5 years in the high school up the street until I dropped out.

College--I went to one college for two years, then transferred to another to major in Spanish, but they canceled the Spanish major program, so I spent just the year there, and then went back to the original one, took some here-and-there classes, and still have about five to graduate. But I have moved, so it will be at yet another school.

Also, if you made a different educational decision than the one you made for your child, please tell, if you wish, what led you to that decision

I went to public school (as did/do all five of my brothers and sisters) but I homeschool my kids. A large part of that decision in the beginning was the uselesness of my own public education (and their dad's), and the harm that I came to while there. Nowadays, though, even if the public schools were great, I would not send the kids there, because it is simply more natural to have them home.

I was such an angry child that I was a pain-in-the-neck to myself and to most of my teachers until college. However, I had three very outstanding teachers, probably more, but I didn't know it.

One was a high school English teacher for my freshman year, who saw something salvageable in me and strongly encouraged me to both write and draw.

Another was a high school sophomore English teacher who had the reputation for being the meanest teacher in the area and for being on probation for failing all of her students except 2 from each of her classes the year before. I failed the first quarter, then determined that she was not going to beat me. I passed with a solid A and a whole lot of very important lessons she taught me.

The third was my high school biology teacher when I was a junior. She was a wonderful woman and a strong believer. She kind of let me get by with things, but at that point in life, I needed that. She knew I was trading off my dissecting by doing other students' drawings of the dissections.

I grew up in a small midwestern town and attended public school until my sophomore year. My grade school years were less than perfect, with a horribly emotionally abusive 2nd grade teacher and years of subsequent bad feelings toward school in general.

My family moved to another small town my freshman year and again my sophomore year. I was in a time of rebellion and inner turmoil at that time and ended up losing my temper with my 10th grade choir teacher and walking out of her class. Permanently.

Another teacher (I guess you could say she saw the potential, rather than the problem) pulled some strings and got me enrolled at a local university at age 15. I attended that university for 3 years and then (for various reasons) moved to the west coast to finish school. Instead of graduating, though, I met a wonderful Christian guy, got married and had babies. It may not have been the best choice (not finishing my college education), but it was the choice I made and I really have no regrets!

I always said that "one day" I'd go get my degree, but so far that hasn't happened. No worries! There's still time!

We now have 6 kids and have always homeschooled. The oldest will be a junior this year and the youngest will be doing basically 5th grade work. When we first moved to Mexico, we enrolled the boys in the local public school. It's a small school -- about 30 kids in the combined 5th and 6th grades -- and we thought it would be a great way for them to learn Spanish. Well, they didn't learn much Spanish there, but it was a learning experience!!! There were some positives to their time in the public school, but the biggest (IMO) was the affirmation I got about continuing to homeschool!!!

I went to a private kinder. This was before there was public kinder. It was in Mrs. Birds basement. Her daughter was a year behind me, but she did kinder every year until she was 6!
public school with the same kids all the way through High School. Even though I lived in a small town (pop.2000) our High School district was huge, all the farm kids, so my grad. class was about 700 students.

I liked school up until 7th or 8th grade, Jr. High. 9th was the worst year of my life.

I threatend to quit and go to college during my sophmore year, so my dad enrolled me in eng. 101 at the University. I could handle the coursework, but the girls wouldn't have anything to do with me, and the boys...a little too much. I got a C, because I couldn't type.

So... I went back to High School, learned to type, and then waited till I was 24 to return to college. I have an assoc. RN and I am currently homeschooling myself for my BS in Psych (Liberty University Online)

My husband also grew up in a small town (different one) and went to public school all the way through.

That is where we live now, Most of the teachers are either the same ones he had, or the kids he went to school with.

Mostly the kids are in PS. I am going to homeschool ds for 6th grade. (rather than middle school) dd went to ps for 2 weeks of kinder, and we were in the office a bunch... she was sooooooo bored. So she did private christian until 5th. (she is a sr. this year, and sports are very important for her... she is concurrently enrolled at the University.) youngest ds is in 3rd at ps, he has done fine there, but our choices of teachers aren't great for 4th and 5th... so (as he says) "actually I am considering homeschooling myself."
I like the idea of next year, with the girls out of the house... homeschooling both the boys and having some freedom in vacations and all.

I don't have kids, but I'll answer.

  • K - A public school in Maryland
  • K - 1 We moved, so I attended another public school in Maryland
  • 2 - 4: A public school in Alaska. The best school I ever went to.
  • 4: A public school in Washington D.C. The Alaskan education was very good so I was ahead of the students there - they put me in different classes than my peers so that I wouldn't fall behind.
  • 4 - 5: Third school for me when I was in the fourth grade. In fifth grade we moved again. We were in Texas. One of the schools in Texas really pushed me - we started learning Algebra in the 4th grade - which helped me a lot.
  • 6: Elementary school in Maryland. Worst school in terms of education - I didn't learn anything for the whole year (the surrounding neighborhood was very poor and the school system was bad). But the principal really loved and cared about us - and she encouraged me a lot.
  • 7 - 8: A middle school in Maryland.
  • 9 - 12: A high school in Maryland. I was really involved in the arts but spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get into a career field that would guarantee that I wouldn't have to struggle. Started working in the 11th or 12th grade. My grades suffered a lot during those years so I couldn't go to the colleges that I wanted to go to.
  • Undergrad: Went to two different community colleges and finished at the University of Maryland. Worked my way through school, picking up scholarships here and there. Graduated with a BA.
  • Post Undergrad/PreGrad: Studied psychology, computer science at a public university, but didn't complete any additional degree.
  • Grad: Public university in Florida.

I'll soon be finished with this degree and am already thinking about another one, if God allows me to do it.

I have no children, but I think that I'd be ok with sending my kids to public schools providing that I can afford a house in a district that has a great school system. I plan to be heavily involved in my kid's education and to supplement what I can, whenever I can. I would not have a problem with sending them to a private school however, particularly during the early years (or for the entire K-12 experience) so that they'll have a good foundation. The main thing that I would do differently with them is to stress God's plan for their lives and to help them discover and develop their gifts and talents early. We'd also talk a lot about planning for college early and I'd make sure that they understand and know the process - that they are informed about grad school - and that they know what they need to do to get there should they desire to go. I'd also make vocational education an option for them in case they are not interested in college.

I guess, my position on this in general is I'd have to look at the bent of each child. Some would do well in public school, some private, some homeschool, some in a magnet school. I see that one of my jobs as a parent is to prayerfully make sure that they have the correct educational opportunity to match their gifts, talents, and temperament and that would help them to develop as individuals.
