And it allows you to do the things necessary to free yourself up for tonight.

What do you do on the holidays? Hang with friends? Family? Sleep til 6 then go back to bed at 7? Work? Wish you had someone to hang with?

I do it all except the working part (lol).

This a dual question really. What are you/ have you done today? What are your 'usual' plans for the holidays? Does it change by the holiday?

Normally I spend time with my folks in LA. We BBQue, swim and then we close out the night by watching an annual fireworks show in El Segundo. This year, the annual camping trip our church sponsors coincided with the 4th of July weekend so I'm packing my bags and heading for the mountains in a couple of hours.

Have a Great weekend everyone!

How does being single affect how I spend the holiday?

Yeppers!!

This year for the 4th, I was invited by friends to come to a pool pary/cookout. We all brought something to contribute to the meal. Then we went to watch the big fireworks display downtown. Even though fireworks are legal here, it's been so dry we opted for just a few sparklers and pavement level items for the kids.

As far as other holidays, it depends on what the holiday is and if the kids are with their dad as to what my plans are. I just have to roll with the punches. OOPS should be better to say; "I have to be more flexible."

Plans? What plans?

I plan to eat, sleep, work, enjoy the summer and NOT get burnt, if at all possible. I think those are reasonable goals and expectations, don't you?

Keeping in mind that I am fair-skinned, this would mean that sunscreen is my friend. A close, dear friend.

I spent yesterday afternoon at a picnic. I ate too much and caught up with some friends, some of whom I hadn't seen for a long time.

I went dancing last night for the first time in a long while. The turnout was pretty good for a holiday. At least it gave me the chance to burn off some of what I ate at the picnic.

Kaman, I can relate. I applied quite a bit of SPF 45 yesterday before heading to the picnic.

It was a nice outing, though I was clearly out of practice. At least I didn't forget everything. However, my ankle was quite sore this morning. (I've had a recent flare-up of tendonitis, one reason I haven't been dancing much recently.) I'll have to pace myself more carefully next time.

Now that my last child is about to leave the nest, it's been more of a challenge on holidays. Affter my husband died and my 3 children were little still young - those well meanig friends who thought being single was the worst thing on earth that made holdiays stressful. Brothers and sisters not close by and all my friends who ended up getting divorced have since remarried and are now busier than ever with their new lives. What am I doing? finding places like this to go to and trying to make new friends. As for the 4th. I went to a new place to see fireworks; with my youngest whose plans fell thru.

Well, we had the party, and it was pretty nice. I didn't feel too out of place, but I did get my feelings hurt. I was talking to this couple that are always really nice to me, and are hispanic. The husband works outside alot, and he was showing me how tan he was getting on his legs (I know that sounds bad in print, but it wasn't, he was wearing shorts, and his wife was right there), and I said even his not tan ankle was darker than my skin. And I thought they were just going to chuckle, or say, not to worry, and point out some attractive feature I DID have (I do have some, even if I am miss paleness), and the wife said, "Yeah, look at your leg,it's as white as the chair." Yes, I was sitting in a white chair. I was really really hurt. And I wasn't wearing shorts, just capri pants.

How inappropriate! I would have the hardest time not shooting back some tactfully yet nasty remark (assuming I could think up one quickly).

You know, I would have said, "you know, you're right! Pale is the new tan." I would not have let it bother me, especially when it's a statement of fact.

Well, it wasn't a statement of fact, because while I am fair skinned, I am NOT as white as that chair was. I do at least have a peachish tone, and the chair was snow white. Besides, the person who said, while attractive isn't perfect herself. I could point out a flaw or two of hers, and I never have, I've always been very complimentary of her appearance.

However, I can't deny that you have a point about not letting something get to a person, and to respond with humor. That is something I haven't learned yet, though.

Thank you, Craig. My older sister was always the type that could come back with a quick witted comeback right away. I never could.

the OP mentioned it being a US holiday- though I am QUITE surprised that it is not one in certain other places too!!!! I worked with neighbours to our north, and if there wasn't a holiday a week, they'd just celebrate one of ours

You are aware that we had our own holiday this week? Tuesday?

I went out with some friends to a BBQ. They live close to the sports complex that had a fabulous show, and we all dragged our chairs out to their backyard (they have a couple acres) and had a fabulous view while eating watermelon.

It was pretty hot yesterday, and during the evening a huge storm looked like it might spoil the evening plans. There were giant dark rainclouds in the distance, and a really strong wind kicked in and lasted for quite a while. Well, God blessed us muchly by cooling the temps down at least 20 degrees, the clouds overhead dispersed while remaining in the distance, and during the fireworks show, we were treated with God's fireworks as well - some of the lightning flashes outshown the manmade fireworks.

It was a spectacular night!!

My mum and her best friend took the Things and their cousin to the beach all week. My dad, their Pop and I met them on Thursday and we stayed until today. Yesterday Kyoudai and Llama came out to visit and we ate dinner, played games, and watched different firreworks displays. Today was a lazy day. We got home, did laundry and then saw Hancock. Good movie.

Also, OOHJ, those are the type of comments people make in jest. I agree with Lisa; make a comment about it right back. Although it did seem you were fishing for a compliment and were more upset because you didn't get one. *shrug* However, if you felt it was an insult, you should have said so. Otherwise that person will think its okay and continue to make them. I have a sense of humour about a lot of things but those I don't I nip in the bug quite quickly. If they say it again, just say something and move on.

As for being single and celebrating...*shrug* The only difference there would have been had I been married is we would have had to choose between my family and his, or combine the two families. It was fun either way and I was pleasantly surprised.

Actually, I wasn't. I know reading back over what I said, it seems like that, but when I really thought about it, I realized I didn't really say correctly what I had been thinking. I think really I was thinking more like the guy was going to thank me for complimenting him on his tan or something. You see, their aren't many hispanics in our church compared to the church as a whole, and I KNOW they feel funny about it sometimes, not to mention the fact they aren't as educated/professional as most of the church, so I always try to make them feel good/welcome/part of the group, and in that moment, I felt she did the opposite to me. But I was actually pretty much over it by the time you saw my post, anyway. And I do know her well enough that I think I'll say something next time I see her anyway.

I dunno, I NEVER say anything negative to anyone about their physical appearance, and I just wish others would extend the same courtesy to me.

However, at my house, the boys and I are serial killers of bugs so you may not wish to visit when it's hot and humid out.
