I love cookbooks as gifts! It was my fav to receive, so I like to give it. A blank one to hold all the family recipes is awesome, too. Do you all have a family secret meat rub, or a beloved sidedish that you could share?

Kath - mark the page that has a great grilling / picnic recipe with a post-it that says "Have fun, love you, praying for you, bless this marriage', whatever and sign it 'Aunt Kath' and leave it go. It would be neat to have another note from you 'hidden' in the book.

Let's see. Grilling tools, good picnic food recipe to eat outside and add some grilling spice and you're golden. And, within the theme.

I really need to WORK now.

I refuse to address the envelope for my thank-you note, but would gladly put my address in a book that was passed around.

Grabbing the soapbox right out from under ya....

One of my pet peeves! The 1st time I encountered this was right after I got married....and looked up the addresses and addressed all the envelopes myself!...it felt like cheating and cheapened the whole idea of the thank-you.

I just went to my niece's shower last week and she did that. I was most annoyed. but I complied.

Yeah! If I can buy a gift, drive 30 miles to go to the shower then you'd think they could address an envelope.

But, why can't you?

I don't know, I guess I'm a rules follower, which is probably why I make a good admin.

Not really. I've been searching for a good pulled pork recipe, but I can't think of anything that I make that is unique.

I'll have to look in my book to see what's in there for grilling. I've never looked. I just slap some meat on the grill and call it good.

When my nephew got married, they did the envelope thing and I was refusing. The other nephews girl told me it was for the doorprize and it wasn't her idea. So I wrote Auntie Bee and DeeDee. No last name, no address.

I did not get a thank you note.

I figure that someone had the address to invite me, they can give them the address for the thank yous.

I like the idea of passing around an address book.

Easiest pulled pork ever:

Boston Butt (browned on all sides) into crock pot. Cover with 1 can of regular coke or root beer, top with one medium onion, sliced. Cook 7-8 hrs on high.

Hey! You could throw a can of soda in with your gift!!

Or you could give them that recipe for Beer Can Chicken cooked on the grill and throw in a can of beer.

I remember when I was a kid on the 4of july we'd get together with the neighbors and they'd throw beer on the steaks. They were so good!

I don't know how old they are, but you're calling them "kids." I don't think you're THAT old, Kath, so they can't be that old either.
I'm younger-ish yet, and I vote for yard games! Bocce Ball or Ladder Ball or Lawn Darts or something like that. I guess it depends how much they like gardening, but the yard games are under $20 and you can get them almost anywhere (Walmart, etc.) And they're fun.
Or, to go with the grilling thing, buy a cooler and put the grilling utensils, cookbook, and maybe some kind of beverage or baked beans or something with it.

That sounds like a good idea. Do kids really like to play games like that? I really don't know.

Well, I'm 24 and DH is 26. I can only speak for ourselves, but we have cookouts all the time with friends and BIL & SIL's who are all around our age. We cookout and play yard games and have a great time. Like I said, just a suggestion, but it might be something different from all the gardening stuff.

My hubby and I love to play outdoor games....frisbee, catch, bocce ball, etc. Have you ever heard of Washer toss? If you know anybody that is good with wood, you could make some of those? It's a great outdoor game!

Or, I just thought of something else...a Ladder toss/Ladder golf game.

There are instructions HERE
It looks pretty easy. I'm going to build one of these for me soon too for us to take camping!

Kath, you can make ladder ball/ladder golf yourself, but you can also buy it in the store, too.

You are one I do not have an address for! I would have tried to look you up if I had (I hope that doesn't make me sound like a stalker! )
Kath, did you look for me?

I hope I wasn't running through the house with the blinds open while not, uhm, being adequately dressed.

I'm coming to the thread late, and since it's 3 days till the shower, I'm sure you have decided what you're going to do.

I like the cookbook idea . . . and if you wanted it to match the theme, you could always include perhaps a spatula for the grill, etc.

Last month, when I was gathering things for a thank-you basket for one of my house-hostess, I found matchbook herb and flower seeds. I bought one of each . . . well, I bought 2 of each; one set for her and one set for me I had never seen nor heard of them before; I found them in, of all places, a stationery store.

Or, perhaps, the cookbook, along with an apron.

Or perhaps the cookbook, along with one of your beautiful smiles.

I used to belong to a spa and everyone ran around like that so it would not phase me a bit.

But alas, I could not figure out how to find you. *sigh*

I know! Can you believe it? And you know, it's been almost 2 weeks and even with a self addressed thank you envelope I still haven't gotten a thank you.

Yeah, you'd think so but... I'm going shopping tomorrow. I was going today but it's 95* so I decided to wait. Tomorrow it's only suppose to be 80. The car a/c doesn't work very well, and could never keep up with 95*

I'm just not sure, I bought the last two fanny farmer from BN last time so I don't know if they've stocked more by now and it's too late to order. So it just depends on what I find. If it's gone I may go with the lawn games thing. (and of course the grilling set Larry got for a prize at work)

You are too sweet! :) but you know, I think they are immune to those smiles after living with me. They might wonder what I'm thinking behind the smile.

No time to post everywhere I want, but the tackiest thing I ever saw was being handed my 'thank you note' at the shower. We were given prepared cards with a thank you sentence and a magnet with a verse, their name and the wedding date. Coordinated colors and very beautiful.

Apparently the right someone complained because we also received a real thank you note on a very plain card.

I'm sure she learned her lesson.

I hope the heat wasn't too bad while you were out and about.

WOW! That is probably the tackiest thank you I've ever heard of too.

Sharon-Marie, well, I went to get the lawn games at walmart and they were sold out. I had bought the last two fanny farmer at bn and didn't want to try and find a borders, it's way out of the way and I wasn't real sure where it was, just the main street but not the cross street, so I could have driven a lot trying to find it, and with gas prices the way they are...

So I got them a cute bird feeder and a bag of seed. Linz hates it. It's really cute though, we have one too. It looks like a gazebo. I don't know how squirrel proof it is but they don't bother it here. Larry had a squirrel proof one and they finally just chewed through the wire to have it drop to the ground. I don't know how they chewed through wire.
