It's very painful, no? *shudders*

It hurt like you wouldn't believe. It makes me cringe just thinking about it and it's been quite a few years ago.

I like to mix it up so I don't get bored. I use to horseback ride 6 days a week and do pilates often, but now that I no longer own a horse I
walk/jog 2-3x/week
bicycle 2-3x/week
pilates 3x/week
yoga 1x a week
I also mix common popular strengthening exercises, like squats and sit ups, into my routines.
I most prefer horseback riding!!!! It's soooo good for your stomach, arms, butt, legs...everything! And it's super fun. :) And for the winter, I switch walking/jogging and bicycling with skiing.

Is exercise a way of life or necessary evil?
I don't necessarily always like to exercise, but I do like to feel healthy and strong and look good, thus I must.

How important is it that any prospective mate share your level of fitness?
Very. It shows me he has determination and discipline and realizes his body is a temple and a gift of God. Active = attractive :)

You're so right about horseback riding, cowgurl. A friend of mine used to ride competitively when she was younger. She recently went riding after many years of not riding, and she said she felt it everywhere.

I've wanted to take up rowing for a few years now. It's another great full body work out. Rowers also have really good posture.

Yeah, when I win the lotto, the first thing I am buying is four kayaks (my sister loves to paddle with me..but I don't want to paddle a double kayak on my own when she isn't around, so we will need at least four of them).

So, as soon as I figure out how to win without buying a ticket, I will see you on the river!

Since my computer's been at the computer Dr. for a few days I haven't been able to post as much. But I wanted to chime in on this thread.

Exercise is not something I'm very committed to. However, I've learned some things about myself that make it easier.

1) It has to be something I like.
2) It has to be something that doesn't hurt or make me so tired or sore that I can't function
3) There has to be accountability...i.e. someone to meet up with to do it, or a class, or something. Otherwise I just won't stick it for very long.

With all that in mind, here is my list of enjoyable physical activities, listed in order of preference:
Dancing--of any kind. Ballet, tap, jazz, jazzercise, step aerobics, yadda. Only drawback is that sometimes it leaves me too sore and isn't good for my knees and back at my current weight. I would love to have a SO with whom I could dance regularly!!!!
Swimming--doesn't have the drawback of above, and improves my breath capacity for singing. Sometimes is too time consuming (what with showering and dressing and all) for my current very full schedule.
Walking--I love to walk, but I hate doing it alone.
Kayaking--see above. Difficult to get kayaks to/from water...this is a sometimes activity to do with others, not a regular exersize...but I LOVE IT.

I don't run or bike (except stationary biking when I can't swim for whatever reason).

I have had a regular exersize routine since January when I had to complete a class in PE to satisfy a degree requirement. Even though it was only twice a week, I enjoyed it enough and felt so much better during the time I was taking the class that I bought a membership at a local gym with a pool so I could keep on once the class was over. It's not as close as I'd like (actually in the nearby town where I work) but it's better than nothing. I have struggled to be regular at it, as I don't have anyone to go with and the classes they have are not at times conducive to my travel there and back. But I have made a commitment to myself to go at least twice a week and three times when I can get there on Saturdays, even during my school year. It will be hard, but not impossible. I'm making plans right now to order my Tuesdays and Thursdays to accommodate this. I've given myself permission to just ride the stationary bike for 30 minutes if I don't feel up to a real work out in the pool. I have yet to learn how to use the weight machines and am too embarrassed to ask, so likely that will be awhile in becoming part of my routine. There are weights available by the pool, though, so part of my personal routine is to get out and do some upper body strengthening with those.

aAAAGGGGH... I'll bet this is all too much information. But I putting it out in public will maybe help me be more accountable to doing it.

Is it important in a mate? Well, I don't plan to marry a couch potato, but I also don't want to marry someone who is never home because they are too busy working out, nor will I last very long in a relationship with someone who demands that I put exersize high on my priority list (I don't mind being encouraged, though). I would also hope that we could enjoy some physical activities together...it would help me be in better shape myself and would be something that would benefit our relationship.

That's my take on it. Great thread, btw.

I like going to the gym and using the weight machines then some cardio on this machine called, Arc Trainer. There is a class called Rumba, and Body Flow that I like too. It is only twice a week for 45 minutes that I can get this body in there, though.

Cycling is one of the absolute best exercises you can do to recover from a knee injury. It is often the recommended exercise for recovery after knee surgery.

And it is a lot of fun too!

I have major cartridge loss in my knees, so I do not do anything at the moment.

That's what I have.

Speaking of breaking bones, I broke my arm at the elbow playing with a couple dogs.

You can actually build up the cartilage in your knees (slowly) with the right type of exercise ... and cycling is a good option. Other options are the elliptical and water walking or water aerobics. You do not have to be immobile ... if it has gotten to that point, you really need to see a Dr. ... being unable to move can cause so many health problems. God made our bodies to work best when we do the physical work. (That is why right after a major oporation they have you up and walking as soon as possible.) Y'all need to ask your doctor about this ... and get out there again. I have chrondomalacia in both my knees (cartilage damage) and it keeps me from running at times ... but there are so many things I can do ...

I saw all the comments about breaking tailbones and rollerblading ... I had a compound fracture in my wrist (both bones severed in half and my hand was stacked onto my arm ... actually overlapping it for 5 inches!!!!) from not wearing protection while rollerblading. I insisted on having a brace, and the Dr. finally gave in after thirteen days ... I then swam on it and it healed incredibly well. In fact when it was time to take the brace off, the physical therapist told me (on my first visit) that I had better function of that wrist then most people have of in a wrist that had never been injured. It was the exercise that strengthened it and allowed it to heal well beyond any expectation.

As to what is spinning Miss Pam ... it does involve an indoor bike ... but it is a bike that is designed to simulate the experience one would have on the road. It is VERY intensive (especially my classes ... we do a lot of intervals and burn up to 1000 cal./hour ... depending on your fitness level and effort ... you will burn a minimum of 500) incorporating high speeds intermittent with climbing mountains. I have had two participants come up to me with their "fitness testimonies." One of them lost 35 lbs in three moths and brought her blood pressure back to the normal to low range. (She was able to ditch the medication.) The other started with a cholesterol level of over 400 and brought it under 200 after 12 weeks in the class.

I did not know that cartilage could be rebuilt. I always thought that once it is gone, it is gone forever.

It IS very hard to heal ... because there is no direct blood flow to cartilage tissue. But ... with the correct type of physical therapy and exercise program you can increase the blood flow around the cartilage ... and combined with the hormones that are stimulated (that testosterone will kick in and make you grow more muscles ... which will stimulate bone and connective tissue growth ... for women the growth hormone kicks in) with the activity and the right diet, you can VERY SLOWLY begin to develop new cartilage tissue. Sometimes the old cartilage needs to be removed ... your doctor will know what is best for your situation ... just don't let it stop you from being active. Inactivity brings on a host of problems. (Diabetes, peripheral artery disease, heart disease ... even cancer and dementia are now linked to a sedentary lifestyle.)

So take care of yourself mister!!!

Shew .... had to edit my post ... forgot a few words and it didn't make sense ... now good night!!

Speaking of water aerobics. I'm going to be teaching water aerobics soon. It is a great way to rehabilitate for those with joint issues and other injuries.

Everything psalms said is true! Thanks for posting all that wisdom, psalms!

I enjoy biking the most for regular exercise and consider it one of the best forms and least boring. I also go hiking and kayaking but not as much.

My doctor told me to go to a Physical Therapists or take Pilates too... I haven't done either yet, but based on what I'm hearing here Pilates sounds like something I should consider.

If you're able to choose your own Physical Therapist try to find one who uses Pilates. Joseph Pilates, the man who developed the exercises, did so for wounded soldiers during WWI. He came up with movements that could be done while they were immobile in their beds. It's truly wonderful for rehab.

I love the elliptical machine (pretend to be running but low impact!). I also swing dance - the West Coast swing variety . No need to have a steady partner or SO and more fun to do than the gym LOL. It's easier on the knees as well (smooth, not jittery).

Ok, I guess im sold...

Buglady, Go for your Pilates certification! I learned to love Pilates during the time I was injured last year. I hated Pilates before, but after consistently doing the one DVd that I have, and I saw the results, I'm completely sold on Pilates. It's very good for core work out and flexibility.

I would love to do Pilates, however, I can't get the breathing thing. This is partly due to being a trained singer--to be told to breathe in the upper torso and not in the tummy goes against everything I believe in! LOL

I signed myself and my mom up for a class but the class was canceled and now the teacher has opened her own studio, at prices I cannot afford. Still, it would be nice to have a few private lessons, just until I had figured things out, and then could use a DVD.

DOOOO it. (I was trying to write it with the appropriate accent. Did you ever notice how verbose he is as a Governor, yet not so much when he was in the movies ... ???? )

I have worn down the miniscus (sp?) in both knees so I can't do high impact things like playing basketball or running without pain or doing more damage. I was told by the ortho doc there is very little blood flow particularly to that area of the knee so it may never heal. I'm sure that now that I don't spend so much time kneeling helps. Do you have any other suggestions for what I could do for exercise?

You can do some quad strengthening exercises …

FIRST ONE:

• Lay on your back on a flat surface.
• Bend the knee of your uninvolved leg (the one that isn’t injured) to a 90-degree angle, and keep your foot flat on the surface. Keep your involved leg straight without the knee bent.
• Slowly lift the involved leg six inches off the floor (by contracting the front thigh muscles). Hold for five seconds.
• Slowly lower your leg to the floor. Relax and repeat 10 more times.
The knee of the raised leg should remain straight throughout this exercise. Focus on lifting by using the muscles on the front of your hip joint.

SECOND ONE:

Lay on your back on a flat surface. Place a rolled towel under your ankle between you and the surface. Push your ankle down into the towel roll. This will cause your knee to straighten as it raises off the surface you are laying on. Straighten your knee as much as possible and hold the position for five seconds. (Avoid any type of bouncing motion!) Relax and repeat 10 more times.

THIRD ONE … WALL SLIDES:

• Stand upright with your back against a wall and feet shoulder-width apart.
• Slowly bend your knees, sliding your back down the wall for a count of five until your knees are bent at a 45-degree angle. (Do not bend too much further than this, as it will cause increased strain on your knees.) Hold this position for 5 seconds.
• Begin straightening your knees for a count of five, sliding up the wall until you are fully upright with knees straight.
• Repeat the above steps 10 more times.

And balance them with some light hamstring exercises:

Lie on your back with your knees bent in a 10 to 15 degree angle. Without moving your leg, pull your heel into the floor. This will cause the muscles on the back of your thigh to contract. Hold this for five seconds. Relax and repeat 10 more times.

Here’s a link to therapy exercises for the knee:

Necessary evil. I dont enjoy excercising in and of itself, I just realize the many health benefits that come from being healthy. I enjoy the benefits however.

I do ballet and occaisonally swimming. And with all the walking around church that my youth pastor makes me do, I get plenty of exercise.

I want to study martial arts.

No regimen. No time. I'd certainly like to get back to one. Preferred exercise is a stationary bicycle, cause I can ride it year round and catch up on my geek TV. Star Trek still rules!

Have to agree - stationary bike for me - especially when it feels like it's over 100 degrees outside.
