My husband took his first church at the end of February as senior pastor, and as of yet, we really haven't made any changes. Most of the changes we are planning on making we think aren't going to be very controversial, but one of them we want to make we think has the potential to be unpopular.

There's a picture of Jesus hanging on the wall of the sanctuary, by the piano up front. It even lights up. It's a very popular rendition of Jesus, although a very innacurate one. I doubt it really looks much like Jesus at all. Blue eyes, roman nose, white skin, etc. LINK
Although I am not necessarily opposed to pictures of Jesus, I do think that having one up in front of you in church while you were worshiping could be a violation of the second commandment. My husband agrees with me on this.

However, there are some old people in this church that are very attached to this picture. They complain if we forget to plug it in. If we were to move it, we would probably be accused of kicking Jesus out of church.

What would you do if you were in this situation?

Everytime I hear My Jesus by Todd Agnew, I think of that picture.
I used to like that song...

armydude, still like the picture and song. My mom has it in her living room. I wish I could paint that well, don't you? Actually wish I could sing as well as Todd Agnew, Don't you.

I don't like it because I don't believe the picture it paints is complete. Accurate, yes. Complete... no.

I don't care for that blonde jesus anymore than I care for the black jesus. I do like the jewish jesus smiling but the images of jesus battered and still on the cross can be creepy. Granted, I love our Lord for what he did for us. What He went through was more than creepy, but to have it hanging in bronze over the lecturen each morning doesn't feel right.

This all boils down to personal feelings and everyone has a differant take on their preferences and feelings.

Of course, being a cartoonist, I've had some fun with images of jesus and angels, etc. I am glad that God has a sense of humor.

I must admit that I've not read the entire thread but I did have a thought. No doubt someone else gave the same idea.

What about using the picture as a visual in getting to know Jesus. If you placed the picture in the front and asked people about who Jesus was. Rhetorical of course or you'd have debates. Would you recognize him for who he was if the man (in the flesh) walked into the sanctuary. What would he be like? Would he come across as actors have protrayed him in movies, especially ones that were done many years ago? Cold, serious, stoic or would he come across as smiling, friendly, compassion? What did he look like. Clearly not blonde. etc.... Describe his family, typical men of the region and time period. He had long hair and a beard....

You get my drift. It may make a great sermon on getting to know Jesus and recognizing him for who he is rather than what we think he looked like.

I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest using the pic as a sermon. Visual aides can make an impact.

Blessings!!

I talked about this with Rev Bob, and he agrees with you and your husband. I vaguely remember his first church and a similar problem, however we had the blessing in that a member of the congregation had brought a Jesus picture to our housewarming, and we had an easier time, because we had a glassed in porch area and made it into a sort of garden like prayer area.
In any part of the church...well, I'd have to probably let Bob advise on that, but it would make me uncomfortable for the same reasons it makes you all uncomfortable.
Your engagement picture is lovely. By the way, where did you all meet?

Hi, Allisonbrett, yes, there have been other suggestions about using it in a sermon. Thanks you for your suggestion.

Mrs.Bob, welcome to forums! Thank you for the compliment on our picture. My husband and I met in our homeschool support group. We've been married for 13 years now.

Rev Bob and I met at Texas Christian University. I had gone to Abilene to hear Pat Boone minister and sing, and Bob, well let's just say Bob was having a weakness for a Chocolate Milk Shake and had lost his keys.

Sounds like a neat story. They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, right?

Yes Sister, that has been my experience. Bob has been in and out of the kitchen all day. We are preparing for a wedding, and he has a cheesecake weakness, as most of the men do. I always try and take extra food, especially because the bride's husband is going to Iraq at the end of next week and I think all of us going are preparing as much as we can so they will have more time together and she will not have to cook so much.

back to the stoy, Bob had lost his keys, as he did from time to time. Actually they were right next to the milkshake. We later went to a campus meeting and I heard Bob lead a singing, well, he was a little rusty at first, but it was about all I needed to hear to know that he was the one. Always remember you have each other, and that God has blessed you. You look like a lovely Christian Couple.Don't let thins like the picture get to you too much. Bob and I have weathered quite a bit. I wouldn't trade anything for the journey.
God Bless.

I want to personally thank you for being here for Sylvia. It is never a mystery to me that strong women of God find each other. God Bless you.

The picture does appear to be a violation of the second commandment imho, However the matter would have to be addressed with delicate efforts. Using the picture in a sermon could help matters. If this helps, then progress to a sermon to inspire the congregation to think about what Jesus really looks like.

A lot of people seem to be hung up on pictures of Jesus. Sometimes I believe it is because there is such great anticipation of the event when Jesus will come again in glory. I suppose it is rational for people to want to know what Jesus will look like, however it is necessary to reassure the people that Plain and Simple, Jesus will know his children.

Blessings to you both, I am sending our best wishes and will likely be off the forums the rest of the day, Sylvia was beset with itching after she went out to the garden, and it appears I am going to have to go get her some lavender oil and liquid benadryl. She had horrible itching after picking several handfuls of blackberries, and we suspect its chiggers. Soon as I get her clean clothes and throw the ones she was wearing away I am off to the drugstore...
Blessings to all
And thanks to the brethren in the garden section for guiding me to these items. Sylvia would be very disturbed to hear about what I read regarding what chiggers actually do.

There is no commandment in the Bible that states that having pictures is violation of biblical principles. Your fears and doubts regarding this issue are unfounded.

I disagree, Cloak. That's a conviction that we hold. As I've stated earlier, I'm not asking for a debate on the second commandment, because I understand that there are people who disagree with our views on that. I'm asking about the best way to approach this subject with our congregation when we know that there will be disagreement on it. It's helpful to see the kind of reactions I'm getting here to know what kinds of reactions we might face. It's helpful to hear from other ministry leaders who have made unpopular decisions, and it's also helpful to hear suggestions as to the when and how to make such a change.

I thought that the Lord should be in our hearts, so that others can see Jesus in our lives, not stuck on a wall.

Lisa, I know you must do what you think is right, but, have you worried this might get you voted out? I am not saying that should be a factor just wondering if that has entered you thoughts. Does it matter if the others in the congergation have a different view? Do you think that they hold the view very strongly, strong enough to cause division?

I'm still wondering who had a camera during Jesus' earthly ministry. Someone email me a JPG.

I haven't worried about it. I don't think they would vote us out anyway. Erick has a board meeting next week, and he's going to talk to the board about it and get their perspective.
