I fall so easily into it that there have been some very embarrassing moments in the past. I so easily pick up on accents, so absolutely without intending to, that I fear that those I am speaking to think I am mocking them. And one time, just out of the BLUE, I did it to someone from England. Where in the world did THAT come from???

I understand. Having worked in the theatre it comes a little second nature to me. I hate when I do something in public though.

I was thinking about something to post on this thread, and your talk about accents fit right in with what I was thinking. Here's a rule about talking southern: the diphthong "aw" is not pronounced anything like a short o, like northerners pronounce it. I remember having a Sunday School teacher from Pennsylvania who talked about Don, who was in our class. Trouble was, there was no Don in our class. He had to spell it out, "D-A-W-N" before any of us could figure out who he was talking about.

Oh! And you reminded me of another thing. Some southerners have more syllables in some words, especially short words.
grits -- gree-its
said -- say-ed
man -- my-an
short -- show-ert
Oh. And Californians can't say "I" -- they say "Ah."
And Californians say "is-is," and I actually heard one say "is-is-is" on the radio! They also say "are-are." For example, "My preference is is to go."
Does anyone know what region says "terlet" for toilet? I can't nail that one down.

Okay. Could be, but the person presently in my life who says that have never been there. Sometimes, I wonder if they say it that way because saying "toilet" bothers them -- morally or socially or something.

I'm pretty sure it isn't a southern thing but perhaps from New York (as mentioned), New Jersey, or from somewhere in the Midwest.
By the way, I get teased at times because I say "DIE-uh-pur" for diaper, which some pronounce as "DIE-pur" and "DIE-uh-mund" for diamond which some pronounce as "DIE-mund." I am teased for pronouncing route as "root," rhyming with boot.
Lets see, what else.
I say pecan like "p'con." Pralines are "prah-LEENS" to me.

I grew up in Buchanan MI and once on vacation to Roanoke VA visited a Buchanan VA. But they did not pronounce it the same even though both towns are named after President James Buchanan. In Michigan we said Bew-kan-un and in Virginia they pronounced it Buh-kan-un.

At the service today, the teacher was talking about a particular Scripture in the Apostolic Writings, and he asked someone to look to see if the you in it was plural or singular. When they told him, that far-northwestern teacher said, "Oh. Not 'you' but 'y'all.'"
I had forgotten at the moment, but hearing him say this reminded me that the Hebrew and K Greek scholars among you probably haven't! -- That both Hebrew and K Greek you, translated, will be either "you" or y'all." Hee-hee-hee! So yes. I thought of this thread and y'all.
So y'all gotta admit it: y'all are more biblically correct than the rest of us! Rejoice!

That reminds me of my high school Spanish class in Virginia when the teacher told us that there was no English equivalent of the 2nd person plural. The Spanish 2nd person plural is only used in familiar settings, and a different form is used for formal speech. I sat there and thought, yes there is an English equivalent. "Y'all" is the correct translation, the translation that most closely fits when that form is used.

I actually try to stay away from using a Southern accent. I prefer my uppity Nawthern sounds.
