Other than monthly and peri issues, I can't think of any thing I don't like about being a woman!

I suppose I'm closer to the POV Sideways expressed. I like being me, and I love my life, but isolating out things I love that are "me" because I'm a woman is difficult. I'm not a mom, and have never been interested in being a mom. I love being married to my hubby, but if I were a he, I'd find someone like him, but a she. I'm not much into hair, makeup, and clothes (although I must admit I do like a nicely cut Ralph Lauren outfit!). I suppose I have some traditionally generalized female aspects to my personality (like being able to multitask), but how much of that is being female, and how much of it is just how God created me specifically? Who can really say? I'm not unhappy or ambivalent about being female. It hasn't prevented me from doing anything. Through exercise and physical therapy, I have developed sufficient strength to be able to do anything I really want to. The biological challenges of being female (PMS, my breast fibroids) can be minimized with lifestyle changes. There are some social challenges, expectations and such, that can be annoying, but if it wasn't being female, it would be race, social status, ethnicity...everybody has something that someone makes assumptions about. I guess what it boils down to is that being female is certainly a part of what I am, but I find is has so much less to do with who I am than other factors, so it's not something I really think to be thankful for (or not). It just...is.

I mean, if I were a man I'd probably have different tastes and love that too. *shrugs*

I guess what it boils down to is that being female is certainly a part of what I am, but I find is has so much less to do with who I am than other factors, so it's not something I really think to be thankful for (or not). It just...is. I've always liked to come up with reasons why I'm thankful in different situations. Kind of like Pollyanna, I guess. For example, when I lived down the street for my parents, I enjoyed the fact that my kids were so close to their grandparents and that I could co-op with my mom in homeschooling. I loved being able to be a part of the same 4-H fair that I was in. It was wonderful bike riding down the familiar back roads I'd loved exploring as a child, and attending the church we loved so much and being involved in their huge Christmas productions. When we lived 500 miles away from my parents, I had some favorite parts about that, too. It was nice not having younger unmarried siblings give me parenting advice, for one thing. My favorite part--it was that season of our lives that we really grew up and became our own independent family unit. We made decisions on our own without feeling like we had to ask Mom and Dad. I do the same thing about just about every situation. My favorite part about living in the city is being close to places. It was wonderful having a Walmart just a couple of minutes away. We could also get a lot more channels on the radio and TV, and DSL actually serviced our city (if we had been inclined to sign up). My favorite part about living in the country is the beauty of the outdoors. I love being able to have chickens and ducks and we're thinking about getting a goat. We have a huge garden, and the kids can run and play and we don't have to worry about them running into the highway. So I guess that's the same thing I'm doing with this thread. It's not to figure out why being female is superior to being male, because it's not. God made both male and female, and they are both good. But sometimes it's nice to count the blessing, especially about something we couldn't change anyway. I mean, if I really didn't like living in the country, we could always move back to the city. I don't have to list my favorite parts if there really aren't any benefits. But I'm a woman and I can't ever be a man, not even if I wanted to. If I had been created a man, I probably could think of reasons to be glad for that, too. It's good to dwell on the positive and not the negative. So I think it's fun sometimes to remind myself of all the positive things there are about being one. God made me a woman on purpose, and so I'm thankful that's what He's chosen for me.

Well, I can't sing soprano, even though I'm a woman. I have a low alto voice, and often in choirs I'll sit with the men and sing tenor. I don't sound like a man, I just have a low voice.

All right! Another tenor! I started off tenor but trained myself to sing alto, then soprano, and if I am careful (!) I can hit some quite high notes without screeching or going off-key. I think, though, that my favorite is singing in the lower register. I can relax and just sing then. When I sing high, it takes too much concentration on sound, etc.

Yep, me too. Sometimes I sing soprano, but my voice sounds too thin to me and I just can't get as much volume as I can when I sing low. A couple of years ago I played Mary Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life" and had a lot of high solos. I worked on breathing techniques and learned to sing soprano, but I still prefer to sing where I'm comfortable.

I love carrying babies and nursing them. I was just saying to our house guests the other day that men miss out on so much, concerning pregnancy, but I'd rather have it that way. I consider it an honor and a privilege to carry life.

Oh, see, I'm a first soprano and hate it. I've been a member of ensembles, choirs, trios, etc and have always gotten stuck singing the absolute highest part because I can. I do it well, but really do not enjoy it at all. Just curious, what do you not like about it? I prefer singing harmony myself, not only because it's more comfortable but because I just enjoy singing harmony and adding beauty to a song. The melody is often boring to me. But if I could sing soprano, I would enjoy the fact that I'd get to sing more solos. They don't make many solos in the contralto range.

I enjoy choosing a harmony-note and just singing along with others, listening to the varied tones. Parts of the liturgy where I attend are sung. I sit on the second row, and I listen as the others behind me sing, choosing a harmony they are not singing, and we just make beautiful music before L-rd in those short singing-prayers. I admit that I enjoy that -- maybe a little too much for times of prayer. I am not one who enjoys singing publicly anymore. I used to, when I was in church but not in my home-church. Now, I can get really bent out of shape when I help the praise team during worship, although I do it when asked. But I so enjoy congregational singing, a time when I can relax and sing my heart out. My voice is about four whole steps below the point at which I would be an octave higher than my husband, so that makes it interesting when we are doing the singing parts of our Sabbath meal together. If he starts the prayer, it is a little higher than my voice-comfort-zone, but if I start it, he can easily sing along an octave lower. He has a pretty good range as well. Does anyone know what the common natural range is for a woman?

Women don't have a common natural range because everyone is different. You're voice part is founded on where you voice is clearest, not on your range. I would guess that most women can easily sing from middle C to an E 10 notes above, as an average. However, an alto would add some notes to the bottom and a coloratura would add notes to the upper range (possibly as much as an octave.) It's common for women to be able to sing about two octaves, generally a few notes more than that. I love being a first soprano when a song is well written. There are lots of opportunities for singing harmony as a first soprano... you just have to be singing the right music or flip the tenor part up an octave. Harmony is loads of fun!! I hate being a first soprano when I am 5 notes above everyone else and all the other parts mesh so nicely. That's poor writing. It's pretty cool, though, to have others be so impressed by something that comes naturally to me (singing high notes.) That's not saying I haven't had years of voice lessons to hone my God-given talent, but I think you understand what I mean. The other thing I dislike about being a coloratura is that dh is a second bass and so we don't blend very well in a duet. We've tried changing a few things around, but it never works out. It's either too low for me, too high for him, or our voices are too far apart to blend well.

I've never heard of a coloratura. Is that another name for a first soprano? I only know of first and second sopranos, alto and contralto, tenor, baritone, and bass. I'm the lowest female in our family choir, but I think most of my family sings on the low side, anyway. We have several altos and two sopranos. My sister (dance4joy) is the only real strong soprano we have. My mom and I take the tenor parts, although my mom would rather sing higher, and my little brother just joined the tenor part last year because his voice changed. He was singing soprano before that. My other brother used to sing tenor and now he's a bass, and my dad always sings bass.

Here's an article about voice parts. Coloratura refers to a voice texture which is typcally the highest soprano a refers to agility and lightness of sound. Although Coloration can apply to anything (like a light, rapid flute part,) when it is used alone as Coloratura it always refers to a Coloratura Soprano. I didn't know Dance4joy was your sister!!

I didn't know Dance4joy was your sister!! Yep, she's my little sister! She's got a beautiful soprano voice. Our voices blend together nicely when we get a chance to sing together.
