benelchi -> Dangerous food additives (7/25/2008 1:49:06 PM)

I have recently been made aware of two dangerous chemical compounds that are added to most of the foods we eat. The first is a compound made of sodium and chlorine, and they add it to almost every prepackaged food in the grocery store. It has been used as a food preservative for many years. The health risks of this substance are so well known that it is often the first thing a doctor will try to eliminate from his patients diet; it is a well known risk factor for cardiac problems. The other really dangerous chemical compound that is often added to food is dyhydrogen monoxide, that stuff will kill you if you breath it. Elite athletes often take large amounts of this substance to enhance performance, and there have already been a number of deaths reported do to a dyhydrogen monoxide overdose.

Hardy har har.

Salt and water. <-- Highlight here for spoiler

Aw, Tricia, now we can't have any fun.[&o]

There. I hid it. Sorry!

Well, it's Dihydrogen monoxide (there's no "dy" in nomenclature like that) and sodium chloride. Write out the chemical equations and it's simple. :) I replied mainly because that dyhydrogen was bothering me, lol.

Want to have some fun though.... google dihydrogen monoxide and look at all that stuff that comes up. Hehe.

CoeurdeLeon_ -> RE: Dangerous food additives (7/25/2008 2:14:16 PM)

Even small amounts of dihydrogen monoxide left unattended is VERY dangerous to small children.

The effects of extremes in temperature on it make it hazardous for everyone.

I'd stay away from it.

phosadaud -> RE: Dangerous food additives (7/25/2008 2:19:49 PM)

If you test your toilet, you will find it there too... Ewwwww! [:'(]

CoeurdeLeon_ -> RE: Dangerous food additives (7/25/2008 2:28:02 PM)

Ugh.

I just learned that it's used as an industrial solvent and coolant and that it is a major component of acid rain. The more I learn the more frightening it is.

I found out that it is one of the primary additives that people use to keep their Lawn's green. Some gardening experts advocate using this stuff regularly.

What about pets and children? They're putting chemicals on their grass with no regard for what it might do to their kids or the family dog.[&o]

I know.

I have even heard that in new housing developments they are considering a proposal to put in underground pipes to deliver this stuff directly to the landscaping of pubic buildings. And they are not even doing an environmental impact study before doing this.

phosadaud -> RE: Dangerous food additives (7/25/2008 2:51:48 PM)

It's also a critical component in making nuclear power. The madness must end! [:@][&:]

Did you know that in a BWR reactor that this substance can become so deadly that maintenance workers must ware protective clothing when servicing the turbines used in generation of electricity; once the dihydrogen monoxide from the reactor has come in contact with the turbines extreme care must be taken to avoid any exposure to the people maintaining the turbines.

CoeurdeLeon_ -> RE: Dangerous food additives (7/26/2008 9:54:35 AM)

Even after careful washing, fruits and vegetables that were in contact with it remain contaminated.[:o]

phosadaud -> RE: Dangerous food additives (7/26/2008 11:35:00 AM)

Tell me about it. I wash and I wash and I wash and it's still there... [:@]

IonMoon -> RE: Dangerous food additives (7/26/2008 12:13:24 PM)

I understand your concerns, but a lot of people depend on it for their employment. Do you really want to shut down the whole DHM industry?!?

I use it on my garden, and it wouldn't do nearly as well without it, I am sure! In fact, when I forget to put it on my house plants, they DIE!

Well, don't you find it disturbing to know that they regularly use chemical compounds containing sodium and chlorine as preservative in your food!

Yes- I will agree that sodium chloride in our food should not be tolerated. It is also used in a lot of medications- even some that are over-the-counter.

I try to avoid it, but it is in some of my favorite foods. We should start writing letters to the manufacturers demanding it be removed.

BTW - Did you know that in the city of Berkley, CA, some people distributed a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide, and they were able to get hundreds of signatures once people were aware of the dangers of this substance.

phosadaud -> RE: Dangerous food additives (7/26/2008 1:23:43 PM)

Berkley is always on the cutting edge..

One thing I hate is that where I live I am forced to pay for it whether I use it or not. How wrong is that?

That's not exactly how I would described it. More like always off their rocker, or out of their mind, etc...

Don't complain! We only pay for what we use here, and it still costs us more. Ironically we produce much of this stuff in N. Cal, and then they ship it to S. Cal and they use as much as they want for free!

CoeurdeLeon_ -> RE: Dangerous food additives (7/26/2008 2:17:29 PM)

There are obviously some very BIG problems with regulating this stuff.

Christians are supposed to be the sodium chloride of the Earth...that's just cooky![&:]
