Here is a question I cannot put off. It came to mind because I am in the market for a newer car. I know car matters for women. Every car means something. I would like to find out what a car says about a man. Please fill in the blanks. I have included pictures to help you with answers.
So, here it goes:

If he drives a Corvette (Corvette picture) then he...
If he drives a BMW (BMW 380i picture) then he...
If he drives a Crown Victoria (Crown Victoria picture) then he...
If he drives a Convertible (Mustang Convertible picture) then he...
If he drives a truck (Dodge Ram picture) then he...
If he drives an SUV (GMC Yukon picture) then he...
If he drives a motorbike (Yamaha Thundercat picture) then he...

Really? The only thing I would care about is if the car cost more than the guy's yearly salary Or if he had a truck so tall that I couldn't get into it (I live in Texas, so it's a real threat)

Corvette - is fun loving, maybe a wild driver
BMW - has money or is deeply in debt, a bit pretentious
Crown Vic - is on the conservative side, but doesn't care about gas prices
Convertible - is trying to relive his teen years (P.S. did you know that most Mustangs are purchased by 40-50 year old men who couldn't afford them in their 20's?)
Ram - doesn't care about gas prices, again has money to burn or is in debt, or he legitimately needs it for something (work, etc.)
SUV - either he needs the space for something or is a bit wasteful
Cycle - either he cares about gas prices or he's a daredevil.... or both

Seriously, it didn't matter what car my husband drove while we were dating. (He drove an '89 Corsica that was only on the road because his dad is a mechanic.) I'm a bit against brand new vehicles in the first place, though - it's a total waste of money with depreciation.

a car that works well and CLEAN is the main thing. Paid for cash is a good thing. M'love and I drive small paid for pick-up trucks. I love riding around on our Goldwing motorcycle but that is not why I love him.

As long as it is clean and runs well and isn't a total drain on the budget it's fine with me. More important is the DRIVING of it.

Right. And don't try to be a cool macho race car driver and race around town at 100 mph. That would so turn me off.

I don't really pay a lot of attention to what someone drives.

I have preferences on what automobiles I personally like, but that's different.

I know some very rich people who drive some pretty pricey cars . . . but (a) they can afford them and (b) they bought the cars based on more than just looks and "visibility"; in fact, the people that I'm specifically thinking of couldn't care less if anyone is impressed with their cars.

Incidentally, I also know some very rich people who drive nice vehicles and simultaneously also some pretty beat up vehicles. Again, they buy vehicles based on their own wants and needs; not to impress anyone else.

My late husband drove a Chevy truck that was about 8-10 years old by the time we met each other. I loved that truck.

Additionally, I'm not really impressed with small zippy cars; I find them uncomfortable and I don't like being so close to the road.

To *this* woman, all that matters about a car is that it is safe (and safely operated) and paid for. Bonus points are given if it was paid for in cash.

I have known women IRL who were very concerned that a man drive a flashy car. These women were shallow in other areas, as well .

They were assuming that a flashy car meant the guy could afford it, and by extension, could afford to spend big bucks on them--but as has been pointed out, this could very well mean that he is just deep into debt.

Nothing wrong with new cars if you plan on driving them a long time. There's a lot to be said for being the only owner and maintaining it correctly. Everything depreciates. Leasing is probably a bigger waste of money.

But I really don't care too much about the car the guy has, but if he has a ton of tickets then that would bother me.

If he drives a Corvette then he...thinks a whole lot of himself or is in the middle of a midlife crisis.
If he drives a BMW then he...has money, but not a whole lot of money. BMWs are kind of passe.
If he drives a Crown Victoria then he...is 60+ or acts that way.
If he drives a Convertible then he...has spent too much time in California.
If he drives a truck then he...either uses it for work (if it's dirty) or is trying to make up for lack in other areas.
If he drives an SUV then he...has a family, unless there is a bike rack on the back.
If he drives a motorbike then he...has a death wish.

I knew someone who made a good amount of money (6 figures) yet drove an old truck - so old you could hear the truck coming a mile away (almost a mile). Frugal would be the nice word that comes to mind (the not so nice one comes to mind too.... )

The biggest thing a car can tell me about a man is if he's paying too much attention to it. As if he needs a status symbol or a means to impress women.

It can also tell me that he plans ahead (it's paid for) or his concern about the environment (gas-guzzler or eco-friendly). Anything else is a stereotype.

Get what you need (and can afford) first, then get what you like.

My snarky former reply aside...I think men think women care a lot more about cars than they do. And no, every car does not mean something.

Auben hit the nail on the head: "The biggest thing a car can tell me about a man is if he's paying too much attention to it."

Yes a car matters...where I live the mass transit system stinks, so if you don't have a car, life is going to be difficult.

Yes, it means you have transportation.

It says that he has transportation.

Seriously, for most women, the car a man drives isn't an important signifier. Women pay much more attention to how you treat them than what you drive.

Yep, you betcha. I agree 100% (my tongue-in-cheek former reply aside).

I suggest you avoid the urge to paint it black with bright yellow streaks of fire on it, though. And no fuzzy dice.

I never saw the appeal of those big fuzzy dice...

However, my grandmother kept a length of fuzzy yarn (like they sold for wrapping packages in the 70s) taped to the roof of her car. It was hot pink. I asked her why, and she said "So I can find my car in the parking lot." So I just let it go.

If it's in front of my house, he's arrived.

If it's at church, etc; he's most likely there.

If it's by the side of the road somewhere, he's got a problem.

That's about it. I was with a guy yest, and after he picked me up, I couldn't remember what it looked like in the parking lot when we left... it wasn't important to me. What was important was that he was with it

Wow. I asked a question a year ago and mistook the replies as the car being important. BTW, I drive a 1996 Ford Crown Victoria similar to the one in my original post. I am looking at a 2008 Chevrolet Impala SS (like that V8). This car is more fuel efficient than my 1996 Crown Victoria. The car has some issues and I don't fix cars so I am looking for a reliable car with a warranty. Then once the warranty is over -- we'll see. I like the no debt replies though, that got me thinking.

Thank all of you for your replies. God bless.

We've matured since then.
