techne -> have you been published? (7/27/2008 10:08:37 AM)

if so, what (i.e. genre or content) and where?

i'd like to know the genre, and whether you were published by a larger publisher, small or independent press or whether you were self-published (a la lulu or blurb or whatever).

Why do you ask?

put simply, i'm curious.

and i'm interested to see where people are placing themselves in the larger context of publishing, rather than only these forums.

think of it as a survey.

Poetry & short stories- small journals (I even got real cash money for some!).

I have a few more pieces out right now. I haven't finished anything big (yet).

Wait... are we counting technical writing? A psych journal or two... & I've done some manuals for work, but they are in-house.

Okay, in order:

First book (a Christian men's suspense novel) lost to PublishAmerica in 2001 (came out six months later, spring 2002). When I realized what I'd done, I wrote another.

Secured a top-flight agent for that new novel (again, Christian men's suspense). That book, and two more (as-then-unwritten sequels), sold in a very nice deal to David C. Cook/RiverOak.

The next book, a stand-alone apocalyptic thriller, was just contracted with Sheaf House earlier this month (pub date fall 2010).

Another book, the first in a new series (again, men's suspense), as a well as a stand-alone SF novel are presently being shopped by my agent. I'm also in the middle of ghostwriting a memior for someone.

During all this I started attending Christian writing conferences (mainly Glorieta, outside Santa Fe; I was also on teaching staff there the last three years), and in September I'll be attending my first ACFW conference in Minneapolis.

That's about it!

No, I haven't been published, but I've been trying for sometime now. :( (So far I have over 30 rejections. Yeah, I know, small number.) It can be so hard and frustrating at times, especially when you have no idea what you are doing wrong or why the publisher didn't want the manuscript. But I'm going out again very soon, so hopefully this time will be my IT.

I"ve also written some in house manuals for work, helped my pastor with his autobiography, just small stuff like that, nothing really 'big'.

I guess I've technically been "published" but only in very small magazines (you know... the kind you can only buy online from the publisher's website) and e-zines. Most have paid a few dollars and I think $10 is the most I've ever gotten for a short story and $5 is the most I've made on a poem. Really, I prefer writing novel-length manuscripts and only work on short stories/poetry in between that. I have 4 complete novel manuscripts, none of which have been published, but I think there might be hope for the most recent one. The others are probably better used as "practice" and will probably never see publication... and that's probably best [;)]

I sold my nonfiction book about the First Amendment religion clauses to a small royalty publisher. Not many copies sold so far, but I'm still hopeful.

I have also sold several non-fiction articles to established Christian magazines.

For my paying job, I have written a number of brochures as well as articles for legal and industry magazines.

Then there are the two childrens' books I have been trying to sell for a while and the novel I have just started shopping around. . .

I published a book in Nov 03, My Walk with the Lord. It is a POD book, and I used Selah Publishing Company.

I have many published stories, poems, articles on the net (google my name, Irvin L. Rozier), and I don't know how many times people have requested to put some of my writings in church bulletins, veteran publications, newspapers, etc.

I also have a couple of stories in two other books. The authors asked my permission to do so.

I write as inspired by the Lord, and it all belongs to him.

And may I recommend My Walk with the Lord. I got it for my dad and he just LOVED it. Great devotional. :)
