Hi all!

I haven't had the greatest of mornings, and no Bible verses came to mind to start the weekly thread with.

So I went to Biblegateway.com because I know they have the verse of the day. I went there hoping it would having meaning for me for today. So I read that verse and said yes, that is what I need to do. Just keep pressing on, and be thankful for the prize at the end.

We are going to pick up my oldest from camp today. Long story, but she's having a hard time right now. Maybe I'll have a chance to share that verse with her later.

Good afternoon, Dee, and thank you for starting off the weekly chat! I thought of it a couple of times this morning, but just didn't have the inclination to start it. It IS a great verse -- encouraging, and one that I've heard mention a couple of times over the weekend. I'm sorry you didn't have a good morning -- hope your afternoon has been better, and that your daughter is encouraged by you as you drive her back from camp.

I heard from Ginny last night and let her know we really missed her in here. I know she won't mind me sharing this . . she had a terrible week of pain and sickness from her abcessed tooth, and even tho I asked her if she got it fixed, she/we got sidetracked and I didn't get an answer. Hopefully, she'll be able to come post when she gets home this evening, but I know she'd appreciate our prayers also.

I've posted some things in my thread again about last week, if anyone would like to read them. Just use the link at the bottom of the page & go to the last 2 pages of my thread. Today I've been busy trying to catch up on the houswork. Feel like I've made a dent anyway.

I've been following your thread Leah. I'm so glad there were blessings in the midst of the grief.

Thanks for the update about Ginny.

We picked up E from camp this evening. Then we stopped by and visited my grandparents. They live near the camp. They are both 90 and my gma broke her hip this spring. All things considered she is doing quite well. I'm glad we stopped, even though it got us home late. Unfortunately we all have to get up in the morning because I'm taking my middle two to the orthodontist for an evaluation. But I put off calling all summer, and I'm just fortunate that I'm getting them in before school starts.

Been following your thread. Sounds like a loveing get-together after your brothers funneral. The whole family is still in my prayers.
So you have blackberries in your yard? I went picking at my dads house last week. They were really good..but not nearly enough.
Could'ent do any bakeing with them or anything. But the kids enjoyed eating them.

My "sister get-away" was nice this year. Started out with me and Pam traveling to our older sisters house. What should have taken us four hours, took us six hours. We stopped for supper, and continued traveling north. We had just stopped for gas, when I asked Pam to take over driveing. We only had two hours to go. It was dark outside by then. So we left the gas station, and got back onto the interstate. We had just gone about three miles when we noticed we had a flat tire! Pam pulled over, and there we sat. Good thing we both had cell phones with us. I called my husband to ask if I had a spare tire..and Pam called her road side service company. Good thing she had something like that! So there we sat. Waithing for the service to try to locate us. Then a police car went past on the other side of the interstate..he flashed us with his big spotlight. We figured he would get off the interstate and come to our rescue. Which he did. But the wait seemed sooo long. He stayed with us until the tow truck finally found us. So between the two guys they got the tire changed. But we noticed the small spare tire also needed air in it. The service guy told us we needed to go back to the town, and get air in it. We did..but once we got back to the gas station, we discovered we did'ent even know how to put air in that tire! Had to go ask some guy to help us once again! I'm thinking me and Pam need to take a class on changing tire's and putting air in them! Here we are..two adult women...who have no clue how to change a tire or fill one!! That's just sad. But I must say, we sure did laugh at how helpless we were. LOL
I did'ent even know that tire was UNDER the van..let alone where that jack was...or how to even use it..or how to crank down that donut tire. And you know what? You can only drive 50MPH on one of them small tire's. But we finally made it to Sue's house around 11PM. Next morning we left in her car..for Minn. My brother-in-law found another tire for my van, while we were gone. My tire was shot..guess the tire walls were shot even. Our trip to Minn went w/o anymore mishaps. The visit with my cousin was really nice. But the time sure did go fast. My cousin looks pretty good. She needs to rest some during the day, and she is alittle weak, but all in all, she looked pretty good. Her hair is comeing back even. Guess she goes back in for treatment next month. Sure was nice to see her again and spend some time with her.
St Paul, Minn. sure is a big town. I don't think I could live there. But it was nice to visit. The grass around the area was dry and brown. Guess they need some rain. Even the Mississippi River looked low. You could see sand bars and the shoreline looked dry. It was still pretty tho.

Good morning, Barb, and welcome home! I was wondering this morning if that wasn't where you'd gone. Glad your get-together went well for you -- excepting for the flat tire, that is [;)] . . . the last time I had a flat on the highway, I was driving a small truck with one of those donut tired up under the back end. I knew it was there, but couldn't get the bolts loose to get it out. What a pain in royal behind! And No One would stop to help! I finally had to walk to a house about 1/4 mile away & wake them up to use their phone. Not fun! I had roadside service, too, but no cell phone at that time. In fact, that's when we got our first one -- Bill decided he didn't want me on the road without one after that.

The berries aren't in our backyard, but nearly. They are on the neighbor's property behind us, but no one picks them so we get to [:)] . . . Even with all the rain we've had, tho, they are starting to burn up. In fact, this morning was probably the last picking we'll get from them. I may walk over Saturday to see what I can get, but I'd venture to say it won't be many. I only took one pail this morning and was afraid I wasn't going to fill it, but I finally did -- so 5 quarts this morning. That makes me about 6½ gallons altogether this season.

Thank you for the prayers. They are much needed and appreciated. I also appreciate you & Dee reading my thread and your kind comments.

BTW, Dee, your grandma is really doing well to have recovered from a broken him at 90 years old . . many elderly don't recover from that and wind up in a wheelchair or even a nursing home. That's wonderful that both your grandparents are still with you.

I'm supposed to have Garrett today, but he's not made it yet. We shall see. I'm feeling really tired, so think I'll retired to the chaise for a bit & do my devotions, then read til he gets here..

I did'ent get much accomplished today. Was one of them "take me here..take me there mom" days. Went looking for a sofa and washing machine for Katie, at the second hand store. Did'ent find anything tho. Then I needed to take Cody to his football camp. Now I have to go pick him up and bring him to his 77 football game. And all this running around starts before school is even in session yet. They don't go back to school until the end of Aug [sm=hammerhead.gif]

It's a HOT 90 degrees outside, with the dew point at 72. I had to start the central air again. Just dislike shutting everything up. I love them windows open. Suppose to be this way through the week-end. [:'(]

So whats for supper? I'm makeing a noodle dish, and grilling hamburgers. Will have a garden salad on the side.

I think I'm making pigs in blankets. I had 13yo, K, put the dough in earlier; I just need to go wrap them.

Leah, yes, I was amazed at how well they were doing. Neither of them was even using a cane, although getting around isn't so easy any more. Gma was in a nursing home for a while, but they took her out. If she went into a wheelchair I don't think she'd end up back at the nursing home. I am so glad that we decided to drive down; E could have had a ride back today but I just felt like we should go.

This morning the news at the ortho wasn't that great. The middle two will get braces. My 13yo (K) may need jaw surgery to get her teeth where they should be because she is no longer growing. If she was younger they could do a different treatment. So I feel bad about that. And if she needs it it's not just an outpatient procedure; she'd spend 2-3 days in the hospital and would need 2 weeks off of school. If she needs surgery on 2 jaws they would do it about 1.5 hours from here; just one jaw they could do 30 miles from here. I think she is taking it all better than I am.

A friend will spent the night with K, the one that is moving. Her brother will come over tomorrow afternoon. We were going to go swimming tonight, but it's only 73F out. We keep trying to go, and it keeps getting put off so I feel bad about that right now too.

Barb, I've not gotten much accomplished either, and I don't even have the excuse of running kids everywhere. Didn't have Garrett today, either, so guess I can't even blame him [:D]

We have temps very similar to yours today, and I've kept my nose inside since my berry-picking escapade this morning. It's supposed to rain tonight then be in the low 80s tomorrow [sm=funny.gif][sm=dance.gif][sm=funny.gif] . . . that's my kinda weather [:)]

I stripped the meat off the bone, cut it it smaller strips, coated it with lemon pepper seasonings then braised it in olive oil. Have stove-top stuffing and chilled stewed tomaotes on the side. Easy supper, and it's waiting on Bill to get home. He had to call a tow truck this morning to get out of our driveway [8D] . . . work van woudln't start. He thought it was the starter gone out on it again. Hard telling what he'll be driving when he comes home [&:]

I did'ent know my oldest needed eye glasses, until she went to get her license to drive. Poor kid passed everything until she took the eye test. Failed that one. She even cryed. I asked her WHY she did'ent tell me she needed glasses. And how long she could'ent see. Said she was in grade school when she noticed she could'ent see the blackboard. That's why she always asked to sit up front. WHY did'ent you tell mom, I asked her. She said she did'ent want to wear glasses and knew we really could'ent afford them anyways. Goodness...did I feel like a bad mom! Looking back, I must have told them kids to many times I could'ent affort something. But it was always them designer clothes I was talking about. Not Eye Glasses. So don't beat yourself up about the braces your child needs or even the surgery, if needed. Us parents are only humman afterall.

When the weather is so blasted hot, who wants to do anything around the house? You just don't have it in you. Today the dew point is suppose to drop off some. Just for today tho. Then we go back up for the next five days. I'm thinking of turning off the central air, and enjoy it today. But so far the dew point is still at 70...so I guess I'll just wait and see.
Gonna work on them granddaughters dresses again today. My neighbor will be over at noon to help me. So far we have all three cut out and have been working on the top on Emma's dress, Right now I'm working on the sleeveless arm holes. It sure does look to big for a 4 month old. But I messured all three girls..and it's right on. Working with a pattern sure is more difficult than makeing them quilts [sm=hammerhead.gif]

That made me think of a picture I saw this morning or last night. National Geographic put out a magazine that is totally focused on China--I guess because of the Olympics there this summer. I will read it from cover to cover. Very close to the front cover was a picture of ducks--eight of them, I think. They were alive but packaged as a group in a polyethylene bag (or something like that) with a hole for each head to stick out from the sides. Imagine taking that home for supper on the back of your bicycle!

Barb, you do a lot of sewing/knitting/crocheting. I need to get back to doing that. When I was at the baby shower last Saturday, the aunt of the baby gave a beautiful crocheted blanket of very soft and fine yarn. It's beautiful. I'm thinking that perhaps I could do that (I have crocheted before though it's been a while and I've never made anything too substantial). It would be nice to give something like that to my grandchildren when I get them. Starting on such a project before any are even conceived gives even a better chance that at least the first one would get done on time. As for sewing, I used to do so much sewing. I made many of my boys' clothes and many of my own including big projects like a couple of winter coats, three woolen tailored coats, wedding dress and bridesmaids' dresses, three-piece suit and more. I should probably get back to doing more of that again. It's a way to have clothes in the styles, colours and fabrics you like that fit properly.

I'm sitting at The Forks beside a large window, elevated a bit so that I can see over much of the main plaza area. The sun is bright, there are some fluffy clouds and people are out enjoying it all. A cluster of five middle aged women are sitting around a table beside a fountain. A dad and his three ten-to-twelvish children, all with mountain bikes have stopped close by to refresh themselves with something to drink. People of various ages, sizes, cultures and disabilities pass by me inside. What a diversity of clothing styles. I love seeing the African and Asian women in their distinctive clothing. The variety of disabilities and mobility aids are instructive and always get me thanking God for the blessings he's given me. By another fountain is a woman in a long skirt and bald head, talking to a man. She must be a cancer patient. I think it's cool that she's not too shy to take her pink cap off and let her baldness show. In the centre of the plaza is a round canopied area. In the winter it is flooded with ice for recreational skating. In the summer it's a place for salsa and other kinds of dancing, various forms of entertainment and people simply escaping the sun. Beyond that, hidden by still-young trees, is the river bank. There are many benches people sit on to socialize or simply enjoy the view and from there the bank slopes down to the river--some places in grassed terraces and other places in broad steps. They lead to the harbour that is probably teeming with various sorts of watercraft. When I was here on Sunday, the water taxis were out, speed boats, motor boats and canoes. There is a riverboat or two to add to the mix but I haven't seen it yet this year. A man in a motorized wheelchair (and no companion) just passed me. He must be a victim of thalidomide--just a bit older than me--with one arm half the length of the other and a few fingers without the hand. It is awesome that people with handicaps have access to places like this. Just before him was a man with a camera with a lense two to three times larger than the camera. I wonder what he is photographing.

I love this place that has become the quintessential Winnipeg. There are lots of places to shop and eat but there are many ways to enjoy The Forks even for people with little or no money. It's central--right downtown--so it's easily accessible for everyone. When I was a kid, the area was a no-man's land and dilapatated old buildings owned by the Canadian Nationa Railway and blocking access to the very origins of the city--the meeting of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers. This is now a National Historic Site and nothing may be constructed here until archaeologists have excavated the land in question. This is happening right now on the plot of land that will hold the new Human Rights Museum. A huge canopy covers the dig but the public is welcome to come watch. I'd like to but I have to get up the courage to do so. I think it would be fun.

I'm going on and on. I think I'll stop here and save the rest for my own thread.

I am having some trouble with a creditor who is making my bankruptcy hard to accomplish. Please pray about this. It is turning my stomach into knots.

Do you mean that that one creditor could put the whole bankruptcy process into jeopardy? When you were telling me about this earlier, I thought it was just your loan from him that would be affected, not the whole bankruptcy. NOW I understand why you're so nervous! {{{{{{{{{{Ginny}}}}}}}}

That's an interesting visual Maggie, ducks in bags! Wow, you've sewn some wonderful things. That is a wonderful gift. It's interesting to hear about your people watching. I got to do a lot of that while at the amusement park on vacation. I'm normally too antsy to just sit and watch, but I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

Good to see you in here Ginny. Praying about the bankruptcy. I was so hoping things were going to be better for you in that area.

I was able to tell my oldest yesterday that she's doing a good job of pressing on, towards the prize! She is going back to camp tomorrow. I'm glad; I told her Tuesday that she was welcome to stay home if she liked (of course). I also told her that it felt to me like she left their defeated, and that made me sad. So I feel good about her going back. She spent a bunch of time today on the computer and phone (mostly) working on communicating with the folks at camp about her ride back. There's a parade in town tomorrow, and a girl from here is coming back to march with the band, and she finally called E tonight so they could work out the details.

K had a friend spend the night (the friend that is moving). Then her younger brother came over after lunch. So I had 5-6 kids here all day. God is good; even with all those kids here he gave me alone time with my oldest when I needed it. With her leaving tomorrow I was hoping we'd be able to talk some today. It was a pretty good day, but I'm tired.

Actually, ducks in bag (just one bag); and I went back to the picture to count the ducks. There are 14 of them, each sticking its head out of a hole in the bag.

As for sewing, I don't know that it's a gift so much as having a mom willing to take the time to teach me. I was nine when I sewed my first dress. It was pink with a lined lace bodice and slim long sleeves with a ruffle at the wrist. I'm guessing that my mom must have done a lot of the project but if she did, she never let on and I've always thought I did the whole thing. I did a lot of sewing in the following 8 years and was 17 when I sewed my velvet wedding gown and the three bridesmaids' gowns.

Not all my projects were totally successful. The three-piece suit I tailored for my husband (I was 20 or 21), I misunderstood one direction in the pattern which resulted in a bit of an unusual back vent in the jacket. There was a neat, small rectangular bit missing from the supposed-to-be-sharp corner of the underneath flap. Then there was the winter coat I sewed--probably the same winter. The store called the fabric winter coating but it was a knit--and knits don't keep out the cold winter wind--even with a lining. But I bravely wore it to university and back all winter anyway. Oh. And dh often wore the suit I made--along with the bright pink and purple paisley tie I made him before we were married. He never seemed to mind the unusual detail in the jacket vent.

I can't sleep. I think I had too much tea today. I'm not sure when I WILL be able to sleep but I hope I don't stay up too much later. I'm super tired and have a dental appointment at 8:30. It's now nearly 2:30. I can't go back to bed after the dentist because I told my mom I'd pick her up just after noon to take her to the airport. Sigh.

Maggie, sure hope you got some sleep last night. And the dentist app. went well. Yes I love knitting and crocheting. Sewing is new to me and so far I'm not likeing makeing these dresses [:'(]
Have Emma's almost done. Just have to hem it up. I have Isabelle and Lily's cut out. Just have to sew them together.
Why have 14 chickens in a bag? Someone gonna cook them up?
I love to hear you describe folks walking around. You make it seem like we are there seeing it with you.

Dee, glad you had a good day yesterday. It's always special spending time with one child. Today me and Katie get to spend some time together. I'm takeing her to another second hand store. She is still searching for that sofa. I can't beleive she will be moveing out this week-end! I just try NOT to think about it. My "little girl" will be moveing out [:o]

Not chickens. Ducks. Alive ones. It's a picture I saw in the National Geographic yesterday and I presume the customer buying them would be cooking them. Maybe a restaurant?

I just got back from the dentist. I don't like dentists. I don't like their needles and whatever it is that they use that smells like cloves nearly gagged me. Further, insurance isn't paying the whole shot (first time that's every happened for me) so it's a double insult. And I have to go back twice more in September. The first thing I did when I got home was open up a chocolate bar. [:)]

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with the dresses. Too bad we didn't live closer. We could exchange jobs--I'll do the dresses and you clean my house.

I tryed this dress on my daycare baby. She is the same age as my Emma. Well the dress was way to big on her. It does fit the older girl tho. She is two and a half years old!! It's never gonna fit Emma. I used the 1/2 size pattern. It must really run BIG. [sm=hammerhead.gif]

Good morning, all . . . . I didn't realize I'd not posted in here yesterday. Had read several times, so guess I just thought I'd posted [8D]

To answer your questions, Dee, I was fine, still am, and no, I do not have Garrett this week . . only found that out about 11:00 yesterday morning, tho. I'm glad you got to enjoy some alone time with your daughter. She sure sounds like a mature young lady, Dee.

Barb, sewing garments is a lot different than making quilts, for sure. And yes, I had lots of problems getting those smaller sizes to fit . . had to basically cut my own patterns for the tiny ones, which didn't always work so well. Maybe you can use that dress for one of the older ones, and try to cut another for the baby. Not very encouraging, I know, but been there, done that. I tried to use simple patterns that would be easy to cut down in size, but even figuring out which ones those would be takes some experience in working with patterns I think . . . . . . . . . it would be hard to let Katie go [:o] . . glad you're getting some special time with her too.

Maggie, I like to watch ppl like that too, tho I am not in places to do it often. They're right, tho, you describe it so well -- feel like I was there with you [:D]

I baked blackberry cobblers yesterday . . . Tuesday Bill worked in the shop & was chatting with his favorite boss. He mentioned that I'd been out picking blackberries, and Jimmy goes, "oh, I love blackberries!", so Bill took him a bowl the next day. When he gave them to him, his boss says, "tell Linda she belongs to me!" . . . . . . . I told Bill to tell him it took much more than that to own me. Then Bill told him I was making a cobbler and would send him a piece. Well, the other boss' wife was nearby and heard that, so she pipes up & says, "tell her it better be more than 'a piece.' " . . . . . . so, I made two cobblers yesterday -- a small one to send to them and a regular one for us, tho we'll be sharing ours with others. Bill went off carrying the cobbler this morning, and I told him to tell his boss there was a lot of blood & sweat went into picking those blackberries, so they better enjoy it [:D]

Went to help clean the church this morning, and was going to go to gym afterwards, but opted for breakfast out with my cleaning friend instead . . . I thought that sounded like MUCH more fun, don't you??? [:D]

Yeah, Dee, it was a gift from my mom. I was blessed in many ways to have the mom I have.

I'm at The Forks again and did another people-watching "report" but I put it in my thread to spread it out a bit. But I have to share this one thing.

I'm sitting outside in the shade of a building. In front of me is the canopy I mentioned yesterday. When I arrived, two men were assembling a stage at the far end of the circle under the canopy. They were hardly finished when a large, ten-ton truck pulled up (in a place where there isn't supposed to be motorized traffic) and several men quickly unloaded a pile of sound equipment. While they were setting it up, another golf-cart-with-trailer came by to leave garbage cans and place stands to which he tied rope as a barricade. It's been fun to watch. I have no idea what the event is or when it starts. Furthermore, a huge storm is predicted for tonight so I'm not sure how this will take place (they're under a canopy but still outside). Should be interesting.

Yes, Linda, out for breakfast with your friend would be way more fun than the gym.

I decided it was cool enough to go berry picking this afternoon . . still under 80 today! WooooooooooooHooooooooooooo!! . . . love this weather, tho the heat is supposed to be back in full force tomorrow, and even worse for the weekend and next week. Owell.

Anyway, I got another gallon or so of berries . . had to replace the ones I used to make the cobblers yesterday, ya know [:)] . . . . then I took a shower and donned my mu mu . . . don't think I'll get dressed again, either -- will just lounge in it for the evening [:D]
