Just wait until you get him home and have to tell him "oh, he's ___ weeks old, but his adjusted age is ____" As if it isn't hard enough to keep track of one age, they'll want you to know both so that when he is two months "behind" he's really "on time" with the adjustments to his age (have they told you about that yet, like 12 week olds usually have good head control but he won't probably until 16-20 depending on how well he develops muscle control but since he was early they subtract the weeks he should have been baking? So if he were 12 weeks early and 12 weeks old, he would be a newborn with the adjusted age and then start meeting milestones from the "adjusted age") Okay, getting rambly, heading for bed- so glad he is doing well- he will be home before you know it- wasn't it just yesterday that he wasn't even getting breast milk and now he is NURSING?! Keep it up mama!

Yeah, the adjusted age thing is weird. I'm having to keep it all straight. I had a girl ask me in Babies R Us today when I was due...I confused her...I told her Oct 17, but he is 6 weeks old! HAHA..I then explained. Yeah, time is really going by fast...sometimes anyway, some days it seems like forever.

Thinking of you, Big Isaac, tonight, and praying that you rest very well (and his mom and dad, too).

Erin - I don't know what your options are with preemie nipples, but BigBee had a favorite type. DeeDee hated it - but she refused a bottle after about 4 months and I was able to nurse her so we didn't try to many with her.

There are differences in the shape, softness and the size of the opening. The nurse who helped with DeeDee (I had to nurse her until she was full for a day before she could go home) said that they get used to milk hitting one part of the palate at a certain intensity / force and then another nipple feels different. I also remember her saying that babies that have to work harder than they are used to get frustrated.

I'll visit with the nurse more on it later, but I am not sure we have any options of the nipples and stuff. They are the ones who handle that and I assume they know what they are doing....

We had to start a new medication today since his red blood count was low, mainly because of immaturity and how fast he's growing. But she said its VERY common to do that.

They upped his feed to 39mls.

They also said he hasnt had any spit ups, he was having spit ups and reflux badly so they started him on Reglan yesterday.

Yeah, I was wondering how many types, preemie size, they would make.

I just makes more sense to make them for 3-6 month olds.

Alternately, maybe you can 'adjust' to match the bottle if you KWIM. The lactation consultant may have suggestions. It is the opposite of her goals, but still...

Yeah, I'm not TOO worried about it. I mean, they know what to do, and they arent pushing him TOO hard for it yet. He's still got some other "work" to do before he comes home.

Have you asked why Isaac has to take a bottle? At least one of my kids never would take a bottle.

Nate never would take a bottle, either. But I would not make a deal out of it unless it was the only thing keeping him from coming home.

he will need to take a bottle anyway since she plans on only being home from work a few weeks after he comes home...so the bottle is necessary for them (though I do think it very odd that they have that requirement for ALL babies)

4lb 4.4oz

We had a good day. We nursed and then cuddled for three hours. Just a couple heart rate drops but he is getting better on bringing it up on his own. Still refuses a bottle. They say for some reason "little white males" have a hard time getting the hang of a bottle. They say girls and boys of other ethnicitys do fine, no idea why but I've heard that from several nurses AND parents.

Wow, that's a good weight. Well, I hope he accepts the bottle soon, but how wonderful that nursing is going so well!

We are BOTH a little stubborn but Klay moreso than me. He definitely has his daddy's personality.

Klay was just there ( I couldnt make it and they needed us to resupply milk so Klay made a quick trip)and said he had taken 12mls of milk and they thought they could maybe get him to take a little more after they burped him. He has a little bit of reflux and needed a "break." So maybe we are getting there.

Quick trip - So, he was speeding? I think that is the only way to move it along.

I remember my dad patting my brother's stomach to make more room (of course he was about 3 and 'full' with most of a plate of food left)

Yeah, the nurse told him "if mama is going to leave you and go back to work you have to take this nasty bottle"

I really dont need help adding the guilt Regardless of what they think I love my baby and am a good mama.
