"I voted for the first 6, lol! Here's why..from birth to age 12, I was a messy clutter bug. At 12, something "clicked," and from ages 12 to 24, I became a neat freak, but I was also sentimental, so I developed good organizing habits, and I did do some purging every couple of years.. At age 24, I got deathly ill, and due to that, became messy..Even on my better days, my joints hurt, my brain was confused, etc. In the next couple years, when I got to 90% better health, and was able to work part time, but not full time, I became neat again. When I switched to full time work, for some silly reason, I also decided right at that time to keep everything ..and it was right during that time someone gave me a bunch of old dolls, and old needlework and craft stuff, and someone else gave me boxes and boxes of old dishes. I was too exhausted to keep it up, so became a full on clutter bug/pacrat. I was even saving all my church bulletins there for awhile . It was so bad, I had to start storing stuff in the laundry room and the bathroom. My mom said ENOUGH! She didn't say I had to get rid of 1 thing, but she suggested my sister and I trade rooms, thereby giving me the room with more storage space. By this time, I had quit the full time job, and was home with my sister. Well, that was at least a year and a half ago, and I'm still not all done. I threw away all the old bulletins, old school notes, etc. I passed out all but about 4 or 5 of the dolls amongst the little girls at church. I gave the dishes away to a former coworker who had plenty of children and grandchildren that needed them NOW(not later, like me). I took several carloads of various things to the Salvation Army and the King's Christian School thrift store. I gave away some of my stuffed animals. I tossed old magazines. I donate used issues to my gym. The craft stuff, sentimental stuff and documents that I DID keep are all in plastic boxes or stacked drawers or paper files and labeled neatly(I got a brother labeler). I got rid of quite a bit of home decor stuff, and I am in the process of arranging what I kept. When it's all done, I'm going to post pictures. Books are back in the bookshelf. Anyway, it's much much better, and although I'll always be sentimental, I hope I never let it get that bad again. My clothes are still in the bathroom closet, my bedroom closet has all the storage/craft stuff, but at least my mom has the laundry room back. I'm 36 now...so now I hope what I am is a healthy medium. I'm also learning to do things like if I don't have the time/energy for a huge, all at once cleanup, to at least pick up one or two things everytime I pass an area. That does help. " Only at this point, I am finally done with the organizing part, yay! Now I just have to hang shelves, curtains, a border, some more pictures, and arrange the decor that goes on the shelves.

what if you have more things than space and you don't know how to purpose the area. Put the stuff in 3 piles, keep, give away, and throw away. Then the stuff you keep, get organizing drawers, or put in the cupboards, or use it as decor, or store it in the closet, depending on the kind of stuff it is. Also, like I said in another post, mentally divide the room into "mini rooms."

The big thing bugging me right now is the kids toys. We need a system where they can put them away on their own without throwing them into a bottomless pit of a toy box. Get something like This! I think they would work well for toys and other stuff, they have ones that roll too... just something to give ya an idea.

Everything is in a set....if it doesn't go in a set then there is ONE box it goes in (small box....and anything that doesn't fit in there gets tossed). All cars go together in the cars bucket....music stuff in the music bucket....blocks in the block bucket, etc. It works much better with the number and ages of our kids now. They are allowed to get out one bucket per room (and they aren't generally allowed to play in the living room...so it's two buckets max at a time...one in the girls room, one in the boys room). They can;t get anything else out til that is picked up. That's why for toys, I like the basket, box idea better than the 3 drawer idea. It gives the kids a better picture of the seperateness. But for an adults things, the drawers can be great. I tried to do basically Sarah's system when I worked at a preschool, and to some extent I did, but that preschool was SO chaotic, it was hard to keep it up. However, if I ever have my own in home preschool (which I would love to do), or have my own kids, I will use that system.

I don't have that "organization gene" either...the closest I can get is sorting silverware. I'm thinking of just throwing EVERYTHING out and starting over. If I did it a little at a time I could probably handle it...but the ADHD doesn't help either... Wonder if I could pay someone to come and do it...and maybe I could keep it up... If you are that overwhelmed, I think it would be worth it to hire someone. Just make sure you get someone that will listen to you and do it your way, and not try to take charge.

I think the ones I dislike the most are those little 4 inch dolls that come with a bunch of itty bitty accessories, including socks and underwear and brushes and bottles. That's one of the reasons that at the preschool we made a distinction between table top toys and toys you could play on the floor with. Although anything tiny enough for a kid to choke on wasn't allowed in the door at all, well, there were some exceptions, like the marbles for the marble maze, but they were used only under close supervision.

ORIGINAL: JJB1222 I do have some of those drawers, but I'm thinking of getting more. A lot of places have those plastic drawer carts on sale right now because students are headed back to college. My Wal-Mart had them on sale a few weeks ago and probably still does. You might look around now while it's the back-to-school season.

Hmm, not sure if I am allowed to do this but try this website... www.flylady.net It has helped me out immensely with keeping my home on the up and up. It has a lot of good stuff in there, all based around routines. Let me know what you think of it. Okay.. Stacey

I also like the little drawers for craft supplies and stuff like that. I could have a whole house of plastic furniture.

I personally am not a big fly lady fan...I find her stuff to be way too overwhelming on a day to day basis I agree. Plus, to me, its too much of a "DO IT HER WAY," type of thing, whereas I believe each individual, family, classroom, offfice, whatever or whoever it is, needs to find what works best for THEM, and not be so dictated to like that. If I did the fly lady, I'd get worn out, frustrated, and sick.

I'm not familiar with her, but she sounds like the Martha Stewart of organizing.

Good ideas. You're right about the little one's toys. I think if they have too much around them they get over stimulated anyway and are less likely to play with any one thing for very long...at least that's what I've observed of my own.

I'm in the process of purging at least half of the kids toys and clothes ... they have way too many!!! I've already sorted through most of my clothes and donated what I don't wear any longer ... I just have to pack away my maternity clothes (holding out a few more weeks until the temperature is more consistent ... that way I can pull out the fall/winter wear and pack up the mat clothes all in one go)
