Bob Saget is a stand up comedian. One thing he tries to stress is that his stand up routine is NOT Full House and it is vulgar which are his own words. He even says "don't come here expecting Full House, don't come with the kids, etc". The content on CC doesn't surprise me at all. As for the content in general it isn't funny anymore. It isn't so much getting old and being the kind of person who has no desire to hear such things but the vulgar schtick is just O L D. : /

All the more reason to love Bill Cosby and Jerry Seinfeld. They both state up front that they DON'T use vulgarity. Seinfeld always says that he doesn't because it's too easy. Anyone can walk on stage and start f-bombing or being vulgar, and some people will always laugh at that. But in order to make people laugh without vulgarity, you have to genuinely be funny.

I know that I'm showing my age, but the stand-up comedy of Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Bill Cosby, Shelley Berman, and Bob Newhart was truly funny and didn't need cursing or potty humor or sexual humor. There were others, too, that I haven't mentioned. The garbage that passes for humor these days is appalling. Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy are really funny, but they seem to have to put in the obligatory "f" words, etc., just for the shock value, I guess. However, once you know it's coming, it isn't quite so shocking anymore, just sickening. -Dave (an old prude)

A word is just a word is just a word. Its shock value or status as a vulgar thing are a product of filters you apply. I've grown up in an area where that infamous "f-word" is just another word. It has no shock value and isn't considered any more vulgar than darn or shoot. If that's all a comic relies on he's not going very far in the business. You still have to be funny. Especially post-Pryor and Murphy, or Lenny Bruce for that matter. As to the roasts on Comedy Central, they are based on the old Friar's Club roasts, which were private affairs and were a hundred times worse than what you see on Comedy Central. For the record, Bill Cosby and Sinbad are two of the funniest people I've ever seen and neither one has ever used foul language in their act.

Even my teenagers like Bill Cosby better than mot of today's comics. Hubby likes Jeff Foxworthy, and I guess there re comedic ACTORS we all like, like Jim Carey and Steve Carell. My girls were talking the other day about seeing a clip show of old Saturday Night Live stuff recently. They were talking about how much funnier the show was when their dad and I were kids, than it is today.

I agree that the SNL of days past was much better than what is being shown today. The actors just had great chemistry. But I digress: it IS amazing what passes for comedy today. I mean, look at a show like The Honeymooners. No sexual references. No cussing. Just good CLEAN fun. Same with I Love Lucy and other shows of the 50's and 60's. Remember Lucy and Ricky even had twin beds. Things that make you say, "Hmmm...!"

They show reruns of The Color Honeymooners on American Life TV. Unfortunately DirecTV does not carry the channel (though I'm more interested in WKRP, 60s Batman and The Green Hornet, also shown on that channel). quote:

I'm in the minority as I actually like the current SNL stuff though the old stuff is great also. Especially Land Shark. Part of what many perceive as declining quality of SNL might be due to this: back in the 70s aspiring comics didn't have many options for consistent national exposure. But now with more of these type of shows, a fourth major broadcast network and of course Comedy Central (and other cable outlets) there are more options for up and coming comics than SNL to gain national exposure so SNL can't get all the best comic actors they want. Great discussion BTW.

Our kids favorite CDs to listen to are Bill Cosby's "Wonderfulness" and "Himself", from the 60s and 70s. They LOVE 'The Chicken Heart That Ate New York City", which is my all-time favorite comedy routine. They also love "Chocolate Cake for Breakfast". If you haven't heard them, check 'em out on the net. As for old TV sitcoms, Green Acres was the funniest IMHO.

I despise Bob Saget with ever fiber and ounce of my being. He is as crude as crude gets. No wonder worldly people call him "god". And Comedy Central deserves to die off television forever.

If you want a very funny comedian who is family friendly check out Tim Hawkins. We saw him in concert and my ribs hurt for a day because I laughed so hard. We took all of our kids and they loved it. He has a great stand up routine and he does a lot of song parodies- he has some videos on his website. I recommend seeing him if he is performing near you.

Wow, that's news to me about Bob Saget! I always thought he was such a nice wholesome guy. Of course I've only seen him in "Full House" and "Funny Videos." I find it irritating that some people think you have to be vulgar to be funny. It's just not true. Look at Bill Cosby, Steven Wright, and Rita Rudner, they don't use all that vulgar language and they're hysterical. And then of course there were all those great "oldies" like Jack Benny, George Burns, Carol Burnett, Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, etc.

Worldly people. They do this was anything they virtually admire. I don't know if it's a new trend or what, but often I see people making remarks, "*so-and-so* is God!"

That's not much of a new trend. Or have we already forgotten the "Clapton is god" junk? Comedy roasts are always like this. They're meant to be completely over-the-top, offensive, and ridiculous. At least they are now. It's probably the only time of the year when comics can say whatever they want and don't have to worry about someone blowing smoke about it the next day. Bob Saget hasn't been a "goody goody straight man" since the 90's. Full House ended in '95. He had that role in the dumb movie, Half-Baked, where he used the now infamous line. Can't quote that one here. I wouldn't anyway. Hate that movie. Ah well. Watch any comedy roast, you'll see the exact same humor. It wasn't something new they contracted for him. For the record...I don't think SNL was ever funny. Nor do I watch Comedy Central if I want a laugh. If I have a craving for repulsion and a headache, maybe.
