All these name threads got me thinking...

Did your parents ever tell you what your name would have been had you been born the opposite sex? Or, did they have a toss up between naming you the name you have and another?

Had I been a boy, my mom said my name would have been Seth. She never did get a boy, but when she got a male cat, she named him Seth.

My parents were so convinced they were having a boy that they showed up at the hospital dead set on the name "Christopher Michael." Needless to say, they did not name me that and scrambled to come up with the oh-so-original-name of "Amy Michelle" (<---Amy was a top 10 name at the time and Michelle was a variation on Michael... my dad's name). After that, they had two names picked out for all subsequent pregnancies

I was to be Trevor Allen or David Andrew.

Later she said she could have named me Norma Jean after her aunt instead of after her grandmother.

I'm thankful for my great grandmother.

I would've been Paul Sebastian

They also did not even have a girl name and kinda just pulled Cynthia out of thin air on the spur of the moment.

That's an easy question to answer.

I'm the second of four girls, and each time the boy's name they had picked out was Joel Robert. Joel, because my dad's very best college friend died in a car accident as a very young adult, and Robert is my dad's name.

No, they wouldn't have had two Joel's, it's just that, obviously, since they never even used Joel, they had no need to pick out a second boy's name.

I used to think that if and when I had a son, I might like to name him Joel for my parents.

That's funny! I would've thought in that case, they would've made it Christina or Krista or Kristen or Kirsten or Christiana....

My mom wanted to name me Heather, but my dad wasn't a fan so they decided on Michelle. I am glad I like Michelle a lot more than Heather. The only boy name they had picked out and never got to use was Isaac James.

my mom just KNEW I was a girl so they didn't have a boys name picked out (that I know of...better ask.....)...asked...yup, she was so sure I was a girl that boy names never came up...lol.

I was however supposed to be named Mary Ruth...but they took one look at me and knew it didn't fit. So instead I ended up being named Sarah Elizabeth.

I think my mom told me they had Joshua Michael picked out if I were a boy. (probably the #1 and #2 names of 1981, LOL).

my mom just said they were leaning towards Joshua Joel for a while, so it probably would have been that....my little brother ended up being Joshua Samuel.

eta....my mom said with my little brother she wanted Joshua Joel and my dad wanted Samuel Adam...so they compromised with Joshua Samuel. Boy my brother wouldn't like it now if he had been named the same as a beer....hehehe (it was founded several years after he was born)

My parents never had a boy's name picked out.

When my dad was 12 or 13 he had this dream that he would have 3 children; girl, boy, girl. Then it was kind of fuzzy after that. He thought it was a prophetic dream and my parents only picked out the female or male name required.

In fact, my sister was thought to be a boy by the sonograms of the time. My mother's doctor kept asking what boy's name they had picked out and my father kept saying 'Sarah.' He was honestly that sure.

Now my youngest brother wasn't covered by the dream so he had 2 names picked out. I think he was going to be Rachel Joy if he was a girl.

I don't think my mama ever picked out a boy's name. Not sure though. I know she did say that she almost named me Genine Victoria. I much prefer my name, Desiree Leonora.

Not sure about if I was a boy. I'll have to ask my mom sometime.
She also really liked the name Carolyn though, so I almost ended up as that.

My mom always loved "TJ" and would have called me that, but I have no idea what the initials would have stood for.
My dad wanted to name me after a girl he taught once....her name was Apple Delight. Luckily I became Amber instead.

My dad wanted to name me Elaine. But if I picked out my own name, I'd call me, Amanda :)

Since both my sister and I are adopted, they didn't have to worry about what sex we were. HOWEVER, my sister and I found out our real names before our parents had them changed legally.

My original name was Susan Marie (which I do like cause my mom is Marie) and my sister had two names (Anne first; apparently the foster mom changed it to Karen Ann).

You know, I never asked. But they did have trouble settling on names.

I was almost Sarah Elizabeth. For a while my dad called my Sarah, then "Cookie" and then finally got it through his head that I was Maggie, for better or for worse.

They also switched my brother's name around, making the original first name second name. It's wierd reading some of the pre-adoption journals and baby books, 'cause they call him "Thomas" throughout, but then he came and they decided James Thomas was better.
