one year a young mother came to the door with a baby that looked to be around six-eight months old. She had painted whiskers on the baby. Baby in the crook of her arm, a dingy pillowcase in the other. She Looked afraid when she sort of held the baby up and said "trick or treat, she is a little mousy". The lady was sooo thin.

I just stood there for a second, then said I had some other candy, wait a minute. I loaded her pillow case with tuna, ramen noodles, a loaf of bread, peanut butter, and all the candy I had left, and five dollars.

She cried. I cried.

It was the most God filled October night I have ever had. And it was Halloween.

Later I thought about the guy in my old neighborhood who used to put chic tracts instead of candy in kid's bags. The ones with cartoons of priests and nuns burning in hell.

I had a spiritual epiphany that night. It totally changed my thinking on several levels.

One year I was a headless body with a blood covered ax.

It scared some trick or treaters so I never did that one again. And one outraged mother was OFFENDED I was holding a real ax.

No head, Blood and a real ax. You are scaring me too! Eeeek!

As a kid I wasn't allowed to celebrate Halloween until I moved in with my grandparents. Prior to that we'd shut off the front of the house and go to bed at like 7. I enjoy TOTing. I enjoy going to Halloween parties. I see the significance of it being before a holy day. I understand the history behind it.

I must say that i've had some awesome costumes over the years though.

I do respect the beliefs of those who feel it is a Satanic Holiday, and choose not to celebrate it.

I don't celebrate Satan on Oct. 31st. I don't worship him, do terrible deeds in his name.

I see no harm in it being a candy and spooky decoration day.

I only get annoyed that about the only trick-or-treaters that came to my house last year were teenagers...

Oh I hate that! Teenagers that show up with Wal-Mart sacks and painted faces! I don't like to give to them so I'll only give them one piece.

I used to have quite a collection of those...I probably still do, I've just packed them away somewhere.

I hate chic tracts with a passion. They have probably turned more people off to Christianity than big haired ladies in denim jumpers.

Hey! That's a great idea for a costume!!!

Amen to that.
Have you seen the one's made specifically for African American audiences? *shudder* I don't know what that man is thinking when he writes/draws those things.

I have seen them. A former pastor used to have a variety he kept in the church hallway for people to take with them. I would grab them up when no one was looking, and hide them under the toilet bowl cleaner stuff in the women's restroom.

A couple of years ago the Things got tracts that had pics of a guy's life of sin and it had drawings of him shooting up, making out with prostitutes, and before he was saved there was a pic of him with a gun in his mouth. *shudders*

I hadn't even checked the boys bags yet until a girlfriend called me about them. I checked their bags and tossed them before the kids could see them.

Are they trying to scare kids into Heaven??? Geez....

A lot of people try the scare tactics when it comes to salvation. Sad really.

I'm going to try and not be intimidated by all the 3, 4 and 5 star members.

Well it's like i'm at a swimming pool and the water is cold -- i'm going to jump right in!

I do not celebrate Halloween.
Peter 1:13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”

I am not here to judge nor change minds, just to offer up what i feel speaks to my spirit.

Jesus said, in Matthew 5: 13-16 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

QUESTION: Do you feel you can still be salty and celebrate Halloween?

Romans 14:13-14 Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way. The Law of Love I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died.

QUESTION: Is it possible that even though it does not grieve your spirit that you celebrate halloween, it possibly may cause confusion or disillusionment to some brother or sister who has yet to come to Christ or who is new in Christ and is weak?

Jesus said in Matthew 18:6 “Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea."

QUESTION: Along the same lines, are we putting too much confusion unto our little children expecting them to understand that we are to the light of the world and set apart but yet we participate in a holiday that is known for witchcraft, ghosts, demons etc.

Well, that's it -- thanks for taking the time to read.

Along those lines, celebrating Christmas can do much the same thing due to commercialism, incorrect date of birth (wrong time of year), etc. At some point, all of this crosses the line and becomes legalism. There seems to be a disconnect between intent and judgment.

All this is solved by knowing that God knows the heart and we do not. Certainly, we can refrain from activities, but our intent should be to teach others (particularly new Christians) not to judge the intent of people unless we have been told exactly what the intent was. In reality, much of the bad reputation carried by Christians is derived from this self-righteous judgment of others.

bluestone, thanks for the encouragement. I needed it.

WesP, I agree that understanding intent is huge. Because i believe most Christians who celebrate halloween or Christmas have good intentions.

Certainly judgement is never needed . I know i have too many issues to be picking up a stone. When discussing such issues, the question of self-righteousness is hard to be avoided. When we claim to be right all by our self, we are all wrong in about 6 billion different ways.

quote:

Wes P: "Along those lines, celebrating Christmas can do much the same thing..." and "Certainly, we can refrain from activities, but..."

By the way, i don't celebrate Christmas nor Easter. I feel that our walk with the LORD is a personal one. Personally, i found myself refraining from activities if i see them as blurred of the truth. As i wrote above, I feel Him calling me to be holy and salty and not to be a stumbling block for His Name's Sake not for my own (cuz i sure do like candy ).

Ephesians 5:8-12 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.

Thanks again for going easy on a 1 star

(((hugs for one star Resting in Him)))

If you really want to get a bunch of stars, diving into these debates can do it if the discussion get heated. We tend to get a bit tongue in cheek alot lately, so keep that in mind.

I understand about not wanting the truth blurred by our human holiday traditions. I get ambivilent about it myself at times. It can be hard to know where to draw the line, especially when it comes to being a role model for someone else. As far as Halloween goes, I don't mind discussing fear, bats, bones, costumes, etc. but I get annoyed with the glorification of evil.
