What is so amazing to me is that Palin didn't buy into the postmodern feminist message that a husband and children will slow women down professionally. In many ways she is a great example for this generation, and others to follow.

But what I meant by needing to discuss this with our daughters, is what many of you have hit on in this forum. The idea that women can have it all is a lie. Everyone -- men and women alike -- must prioritize at some point. So if I give my six-year old daughter the impression that sure, women are superheroes who can run the nation while raising a young family, then she will expect that this is possible and even the norm. But not all men would step in like Mr. Palin, and not all women would have their infant son in tow at political meetings.
Not the norm, and possibly for "a time such as this," and certainly not anything to condemn. But as a woman who grew up in a "do anything and everything you want" world, I personally would have appreciated a more realistic, Godly discussion about priorities, family, and career during my adolescent and teenage years.

I agree with you Anna. My generation was raised to believe we could do anything. I believe that we can do anything we set out to do, yet each of us is born with gifts and talents, strengths and weaknesses. We have to learn where our strenghts are and what our weaknesses are and how to work with others to use our gifts or compensate fo our weakensses.

I too would have appreciated more discussion on priorities as a teen/young adult. I would have appreciated my parents telling me about the messages broadcast to us over the airwaves. My generation was raised with the slogans, "you deserve a break today," and "Have it your way." Unfortunately, the parents of those in my generation catered to us, reinforcing the message of the media.

In our house we have made a habit of discussing the messages the kids recieve from the media and how it relates to life in Christ. We also take opportunity to have great discussions about the numerous social issues the kids come home from school with. It's been interesting to sit and listen to my own kids talk with other kids about some of these issues. In particular, it's been interesting to listen to them speak with other kids about environmental issues. We live in the country on a small farm. The kids have animals and chores and have developed an understanding of how nature works that most urban kids can't relate to. Same with guns. We can shoot in our backyard and we hunt on our own property. The media has ingrained into us over the past 40 years that guns are bad, that guns destroy. My kids understand that guns are not toys, that guns do kill as they have to clean what they kill and cook venisen, etc.

Well, I would. Most especially when both parents are in the service.

While DH isn't in the military anymore, he still works full-time and we support each other fully. The kids haven't suffered. They adapt and are wonderful, normal kids.

In that case, I would probably agree with you. But I do think that are women who are called to military service...

I'm one of those moms. I definitely feel like God has opened doors and for whatever reason, wants me to stay in the service for the time being. It wasn't until after my deployment Afghanistan this summer that I felt confirmed about this. He has a reason for everything.

I admire and look up to Sarah Palin and would say that she's a much better example of a women than some of the women that the media sure broadcasts sometimes! Being a woman in her position isn't going to be easy but I think she can do it. While she's not perfect, neither are any of us. As a working mom, she seems to set a good example. If she can make it in the workforce, in that aggressive, stressful environment, anybody can.

I prefer my daughters and sons for that matter find their role models at home. I know little or nothing about the VP candidate and will not judge her because of that.

I think parent's are the most important model kids will see.
