I typically use an NIV.
Our pastor teaches from the ESV, English Standard Version....and that's "unofficially" the "official" bible for church....it's the "version" that's in the pews.....
My wife usually uses KJV, but, I am not good at foreign languages.

At the moment, I'm painfully picking my way through incil for the third time in three years. That's the New Testament in the language of a mostly Muslim people group. That's a capital dotted i, BTW, which should indicate which language I'm wrestling with, now. The undotted i is similar to the most common vowel sound in the English language, the schwa -- the vowel between the b and the l in the word able, for example.
If you ever find yourself taking God's Word for granted, try reading it in a different language. Slowing down the pace and untangling the meaning from a different perspective will bring fresh insights to light.

I have a few translations: KJV is what I grew up on, but I switched to the NIV in my early 20's. My first NIV was a basic leather-covered bible and it's the one I use the most to this day... it has all my notes from over the years of serious spiritual growth. I tried transferring my notes to another bible, but that wouldn't work. Other translations include NJKV, NASB, and the Jerusalem Bible

I use the NLT. I've found it's easier to read. I know some have said with the NIV there might be some passages missing. I think that would be the same with NLT, no? I also have a KJV, but find the Middle English very difficult to read. Thee, thou and the words ending in -est get me screwed up.
RestinginHim, I like your idea about carrying around Bibles in your car trunk! Letting someone choose which Bible they would like to have for themselves is a fantastic idea!

I think, I can never get enough. I have several study Bibles. Lately I've been into the Application Bible, NLT. But, I never cease to return to my good old NIV from 23 years ago. The (font ) print is easier on my eyes, too.

I mostly use the New King James.I find it the easiest to understand
and love it!

I mostly use the Webster Bible but I grew up on the King James Bible and use it a lot too.

The NT is my favorite tool for learning to read a new language. The first time I tried reading it through in koine Greek, I had about 30% comprehension. The second time, maybe 40%. Five years later (2.54 pages per day), I could read it with a reasonable degree of proficiency.
Use something -- an elementary textbook, Berlitz tapes, whatever's available, to acquire a starter vocabulary + grammar in the target language. Then, download and print out the NT in the new language, grab a dictionary, and commence. Write out definitions in the margin as you go. Rinse and repeat.
At the beginning, you'll recognize (or look up) one or two words per sentence, and reconstruct the rest of the verse from memory, and recognize a few more words. To answer your other question, though, I suspect God may discredit Islam, and I want to be ready when a billion of our fellow men are wondering what to do next. It's an approach to evangelism that a person who enjoys linguistics, even as a hobby, finds rewarding.

I have used the NASB for 35 years, and the NKJV for about 15, but recently added other versions to that.
I also regularly read the ESV and (OT) the Artscroll (stone edition) translation. I like the Hebrew Names Version of the World English Bible (HNV/WEB). I occasionally reference Holmans translation.
I also know a bit of Hebrew and look up passages in the original as well.
Never cared much for the NIV. I stay away from paraphrases like the LIving bible and Message.

I've got an NIV (Archaeological Study Bible ^_^) and a NKJ... I love the NIV but I wouldn't mind getting a couple other bible translations like the NASB.

I love the lyrical nature of the KJV, but I mostly read the NKJV for clearer understanding.

I use all translations within my understanding, NIV, Amplified Bible, Message, 26 Translations, and NLTB. Also the 21st Century Translation. There are major translations on the market, but what is helpful for you to understand when God is speaking directly to your spirit and no one else. I have studied the Hebrew & Geek Study Bible, this has the meaning of the actual words written in the Bible. The NIV Life Application is a great tool for studying.

I have heard the ESV was a great translation. What do you like about it? I have one but rarely open it.
I prefer the NASB that was produced after 1995 -- or was it in 1995? Yeah, I'm the one with the gigungous looseleaf Bible in the attache case. But I am also the one with the itty-bitty whole NASB that is small enough to fit easily in an average shirt pocket. I also still have and use the electronic Bible I bought in Sam's Club @ 1990. It is KJV.
But I have just about every English version printed in the US since the last century. Just about.
Oh, Sisrev! I should tell you! I bought a children's Bible so I could take the art out of it and put it in my looseleaf Bible. That was the cutest biblical art I had ever seen. it makes me smile everytime I open that Bible. You can buy your own Tanakh quite inexpensively, if you want. But you probably knew that. Stone's can be picked up at common book stores.

You know how some Bibles are just the "New Testament"? This one is the "Old Testament".
I should add that the Tanakh usually has the Bible in either Hebrew or in Hebrew and English. Tanakh is basically an acronym for the whole "Old Testament".
Oh, I should see if I can find those children's pictures on the Internet. They are wonderful! They are a mix of beautiful crayon art and childlike drawings. I just love them!
