The second part of your question is harder for me.......though I love the things I do.....and will probably love them when married I think I will do them less.........even now, even as much as I love hiking in the woods alone, or watching the waves crash as I write in my journal, I gladly give up those things when I can do things with the girls.........I imagine when I am a mother and wife many of the things I do now will not have as powerful a pull on me .......make sense?

I'm pretty sure I won't marry a man who doesn't love being outdoors. IF we can't hike/bike/ski/climb together, I doubt I'd be interested. If he doesn't, that's completely ok because I don't like running with anyone at all.

I do mostly day hikes, but backpacking is definitely in my to do list in the future.....so, want to go trekking in the Himalayas? Kili? I'd like to do the R2R2R of the Grand Canyon? Are you up for it?

My friend k wanted to do the r2r2r a few years back but it is really hard to get a permit..........
I would love to go to base camp but have not considered spending much time backpacking the Himalayas.......
I have backpacked or day hiked small sections in the Rockie's, smokies,Appalachians blue ridge,sierras, cascades , green and white mts and the pacific range......I have also backpacked along lake Superior in the UP, in Indiana, south Dakota and the badlands of both n and s Dakota........
I did not backpack in Alaska so mostly did day hikes and some kayaking.....
I want to go to the south west........Bryce canyon, canyonlands etc.....I have never backpack any where near there........so would like too.
So no I probably won't trek the Himalayas unless I marry someone who is a big time climber.....with losts of money......there are so many beautiful places near by to backpack......,

Wow, Joy, that's pretty impressive. I 've done a lot of day hikes, and climb a lot of the lower peaks here in Canada/the rockies. I have plans on doing all the 54 14ers in colorado. THat was unbelievable. My next vacation next year, the plan is to go down there and climb a few then do the Pikes Peak marathon. You bike? Ever heard of the Leadville 100 mtb bike race? YOu should try it.

I used to work for someone who was doing the Lewis and Clark Trail in sections. He always invited people from the office to join him.

I don't mtn bike......LOL give me a road over dirt trails and tree roots any day.
I don't mtn climb either.....you all are crazy LOL....well I would probably do mtn hood or Rainer if I was still in good enough shape and lived out there to train......
I am impressed you want to climb all 14ers.......I read a book about a young man who was attempting to do them in the winter no less......just crazy if you ask me.......
Though I don't climb I love reading books of expeditions.....got hook when I read "Into thin air" ........it is by the same author as "Into the wild" which I thought was a good book......I did not like the movie as much though did you?

I have both of them. Into the Wild rocks. I loved the movie; almost as good as the book. Into thin air? The book was great, the movie, not so much. I see every Everest movie or climbing movie. You should see the guy I posted in this thread. He's unbelievable. Look in one of the previous post with the link to Dano. You'll be amazed. Of course, he's dead now. LOL.
Nah, I'm a starter mtn biker....and loving every minute of it. And climbing...that's when I actually live in the now...because trust me, there's no time for thinking about anything else, lol. That's why it's addictive. I think adrenaline junkies are addicted to those type of sports because they feel so alive and in the moment. I'd be one of those guys but my daughter keeps me grounded.

For a second, after reading my last few post, I was down and troubled...then I asked myself why?
I loved doing all the things I use to do......I love the freedom to travel and having no responsibilities or anything to tie me here......but you want to know a truth that just about floored me?
I loved running a house, taking care of my father, and being so involved in the girls lives more........the past seven years, even though not always as fun or adventurous, were far more rewarding then the years before.......
I wonder the opposite of you PH......I wonder if now that I have more of the single life again is it possible for those things to as rewarding as they use to be?

Well, I don't know. Before I had a daughter, I went and did all the crazy stuff that I wanted to do....bungee jumping, jumping off a plane, parasailing, all the stuff that you'd do if you didn't have any responsibility and if you died, no one would suffer much. But as soon as I had a daughter, as much as i wanted to be adventurous, I couldn't take any risk anymore because there's something more important. But would I enjoy them again? Im sure I would, but I also would be a little worried before I jump because if I die, what would happen? So, maybe the joy wouldn't be the same, Know what I mean?
So, i don't take much risk now. My daughter goes on a lot of hikes with me, even the ones that are difficult. We went on a few this summer, that required some help from bolted chains to reach the top, and she was fine. She's as adventurous as I am, which I'm glad to see. But there's no way I'd go running to join an Everest expedition while she's young. I just won't enjoy doing things knowing someone will suffer greatly if I lose my life. Being with my daughter is a calmer way of adventure...no adrenaline, but a lot of rewards that last beyond the moments of pleasure.

What do I do when I'm down?
Scream at God a lot. "Why aren't you listening!!!???" or "Why won't you answer me?"
Other than that I just deal with it. Life must go on so I must go on with it. I have neither the time nor the opportunity to have any other "coping" activity so I pray a lot.

So when I remarry I will probably change coping styles a bunch, but I'll also have far fewer problems to cope with.

I read, watch a movie, sing out loud, dance, workout, hug my kids or my mom, make a plan for something I want to do, write and crank up the music! **suddenly I hear Point of Grace - How You Live (Turn Up the Music) in my head**
basically whatever gets me not thinking about the pity party i'm wanting to give myself.

I'm probably the odd one here when it comes to music that I play when I'm down. It's Metallica all the way. Sort of goes with the whole adrenaline junkie image, lol. And it helps get rid of all the angst. So, needless to say, their Cd's have been overplayed lately.
