It would also help if the government would stop lying. I was very, very angry a few years ago when our local government put a tax increase on the ballot, telling us it was going to go to fix a specific road in horrible shape and needing expansion due to new shopping centers and subdivisions (it was causing massive traffic backups down the interstate at the exit, which is dangerous). Literally the minute that passed, they said they "changed their priorities" and those funds would now go to an educational program... that everyone had already voted against funding. My husband said he would never vote for a tax increase again, no matter what they promised it would be used for. It's been 4 years. That intersection still isn't fixed, and the area is more dangerous than ever, traffic-wise. In fact it's worse because the thing has deteriorated with that much traffic over 4 years. And people wonder why nobody trusts the government and politicians to do what they say they will. *sigh*

ORIGINAL: blessedinnyc Still, the best thing we can do is just not give tax cuts to anybody and start paying down our $10 Trillion debt. It will be painful in the midst of a recession, but it has to be done. It would be nice it they would do this. However they would look at it as "Hey now that we don't have to give this money back we can afford to do such and such." Just look at Obama's spending plan. He is planning on $250 million a year in new spending. Where is that money coming from? How does he plan on paying down the national debt? A major part of the problem is that congress is just as bad as most Americans with deficit spending. Sort of reminds me of when Wilma Flintstone got a credit card and her and Betty were running all over town yelling "CHARGE IT!"
