Eek! While it is great, it's also really, really, REALLY long! Not that that makes it bad, but wow, it just goes on! Which you especially notice when you're playing it on Rock Band. : )

I would say
Final Countdown - Europe -- Cheesy, I know, but it's just so much fun.

Many of the string of Barry Manilow hits in the 70s. He built a career on those type of songs.

And the Metallica ballads "Fade to Black" & "One". The new one "The Day That Never Comes" does come close to that.

Also while it may be in the "familiarity breeds contempt" bin Stairway to Heaven is an excellent example of that along with Dream On.

One more: "Forever Yours" by Michael Sweet.

Some nice ones have already been mentioned here, but especially Barbara O'Reilly!

How about Plush-Stone Temple Pilots also?

A couple of others that I thought of that may not be on the A list, but still pretty signifigant are:

Walking on Sunshine-Katrina and the Waves
Head Over Heals-Go Go's
Creep-Radiohead

Stay With Me--Faces. One of the coolest opening riffs ever!
Can't You Hear Me Knocking--Rolling Stones
Wild Horses by the Stones has a good build.

  • Where The Streets Have No Name-U2

  • This is the correct answer. Probably the best intro ever.

Oh gee...how could I forget those????

I was listening to Aerosmith today...Joe Perry ROCKS the house! (and my earphones!) (and he's definitely in this old lady's top 10)

Mr Crowley - Ozzy Osbourne (though the tribute album version w/ Tim Owens singing, Yngwie on guitar and Derek Sherinian on keys SMOKES the original and really punches you in the chest when the band comes in)

    Thunderstruck - AC/DC

Santa Monica - Everclear: not the intro, but the way the whole song builds w/ each verse getting angrier than the last, but not really getting louder or more heavily orchestrated. I didn't really like the song until somebody pointed that out to me. Now I love it.

The absolutely best intro: "Procession/Story in Your Eyes" by Moody Blues on the Every Good Boy Deserves Favor album. How can you beat the entire history of western music compacted into 4 1/2 minutes?

I really like that song! Although I almost like the remake of it that Kids In The Way did better than the original!

Rebirthing - Skillet - I WANT that incredible orchestral rock opening for my cellphone ringtone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIQ_NkmYw3g
Absolute - Thousand Foot Krutch - the build on this one is just phenomenal. Goes from semi-ballad to screaming in a single verse.
Move - Thousand Foot Krutch - great intro
My Heartstrings Come Undone - Demon Hunter
