Don't we all try to mold our kids?

I still thought it was a bit extreme, Michelle sitting on that couch telling two full grown adults that their parents had decided that they were not allowed to kiss.

It would've made more of an impact (to me) if Josh had told his parents that he and Anna had discussed the matter and they had made a commitment not to kiss. THAT would've been a lot more meaningful.

it could have also simply been that they decided separately that they themselves didn't want to go down whatever paths...and then when they met they decided to ask their parents to keep them in line. So if that's the case, then Michelle's "advice" shown on the show could have just been her reminding him (and her) of their commitment.

Well, to me the word different is just that ... different (as in, not exactly like me). It doesn't mean odd or bad or freaky. Coming from a large family or homeschooling is only different in that it's not what most families do, and that's fine.

Telling a pair of 20 year olds who are engaged and financially able to provide for themselves that they are not to be alone together and are not "allowed" to kiss even... that's weird (to me anyhow).

I honestly think this is the key Ruth. Being 20 years old and able to financially provide for yourself, even without the engagement piece ,fits yours ( and my) definition of "being an adult". However, it simply does not ( especially for unmarried females) for families who subscribe to the teaching of Gothard and the ultra-patriarchal movement.

It isn't so much that they are "weird" as it is that they ( on this and other family issues) simply have a different worldview. Unmarried adult children, in this subculture, are still until the authority of their parents so this doesn't seem the least bit weird to them...but silly to us.

Amy Rachelle "Duggar" is also "Amy Jordyn"

That would be fine, but I don't think that is the case. If it were I think Michelle would have said something along the lines since you have decided to wait to kiss then we will help you keep that commitment. But what was said is that both sets of parents had given permission to hold hands but that they could not kiss until their wedding day.

I would tend to agree with you Kohls, I doubt that was the case either. However, we must remember that, while it can seem as if the Duggars live in a different world , they do live in the United States where the legal age of adulthood is 18. Mom and Dad Duggar can't "make" them not kiss or anything else. And it isn't as if these kids have never seen the outside world..they are TV stars for heaven's sake.

Let's face it....most kids do end up living lives very similar to their parents and, stats prove, the more commonality of background that a couple shares the higher the probability that the marriage will be happy and lasting. It just makes sense that Josh would seek out a mate who was raised in a similar manner and with the same values.

I have seen a few Duggar specials ( although not this current series) and never in a million years would I raise my kids that way. I disagree with just about everything they do parenting-wise.

However, I don't see any reason to hint that Josh is a brain-washed "victim".

Although, I suppose Jim Bob and Michelle could be threatening to have him written out of the show

what is so sad about that? i think it's a wonderful way to keep the day of when they do "kiss" a very special time. i am all for it, i have to catch myself saying i wish i would have done this different, or i wish this but then i know it's the evil one messing with my mind (where the word says the battlefield is) and i know that when i asked Jesus to "forgive me" i know he has, and i know that i am a NEW CREATURE, so this new creature loves how the duggars do thier family.

Okay, Monday night's episode was pretty interesting. Apparently they do now have a garden, but both the girls and boys were shown tending it (I've always thought gardening was traditionally women's work).

I liked the scene where they were trying to push over the tree, and one of the girls (Jinger, I think) sasses that because they are boys they have to do everything the hard way. Of course, her suggestion turned out to be the right one.

But I guess one reason why the older boys don't have very many house chores is because they are sometimes called upon to do work projects at their Father's real estate properties. I also liked the scene of Michelle taking maybe six younger boys out for shoes. I think they bought 30+ pairs of shoes at a dollar per pair.

The only line that kinda bugged me was that the kids beg to go out shopping because it's an opportunity to get out of the house. I'm guessing they don't do things like swim practice or martial arts practice away from the house. With that many kids there'd be no way they could ferry everyone to different activities away from the house, so they have to stay at home for the majority of their time, especially the girls who don't go off property as much with their dad.

On that topic, something interesting I noticed in the episodes you sent me....they have that big play house with a kitchen and the little boys were "cooking" and at least one was wearing a pink frilly apron. I don't think they are quite as insanely rigid and controlling about gender seperateness as they are sometimes made out to be.

Since I finally saw the courtship episode (gaaaahhhh! I think when they are 35 they are going to so regret that was broadcast on cable tv) I can really comment on it. IMO it was very clear that Josh and Anna made the no kissing rule themselves, though according to the way they'd been raised, and Michelle's comment about holding hands was in jest, because they came to her and JimBob and asked whether holding hands would be appropriate. Josh said several times that his parents did not make these hard and fast rules but gave thier perspective and then let the children work it out themselves.

Haven't seen it, of course, but I wanted to comment that I feel the same way about shopping, and so does my husband. It's not the only time we leave the house, but I do enjoy shopping time so I can get to town.

I heard that comment...and will admit it sounded weird, but I think it was edited kind of weird...they didn't exactly give the whole context of what that person said, just that one sentence. Many things we all say could be spun to sound bad if they just took one sentence out of a whole convo.

I suppose so, Sarah, but the overall editing of the series has been very positive towards the Duggars, or else the Duggars wouldn't be doing it.

What do you guys think about the editing overall? Do you think they've treated the family respectfully and positively or not?

I think overall it's been fine, but I have seen some editing t hat has made things look not so good...though I don't think it is intentional, just the way it came out. Overall I would say good though.

I'm behind on this thread because our cable got "improved" and the DVR wasn't recording the show. I'm catching up with the re-broadcasts, though, and I just finished watching the one with the Bates family. I would like to say that anyone who thinks the Duggars dress weird hasn't seen the Bates. I take back everything I ever thought or might have said about the Duggars' clothes. (Although I still do wish Michelle would have a makeover.) I also laughed out loud when cousin Amy said the Bates dressed like the people at Silver Dollar City.

Also, I think the editing has been very fair, objective and pro-Duggar.

Yeah, it turns out the Canadian family wasn't the one they met with after all, although I haven't seen the episode yet..but just know the Bates are from the south east..and the Canadian family doesn't dress weird at all..yes, the girls were in skirts, but the clothes were very stylish.

I'm kind of dissapointed that they are not meeting the Canadian family, that I know of.

Oh, I suspect Discovery will find a way to get all the ginormous families together at some point. This seems to be the year of the eleventy billion kids.

They come out a little dark, but here are some pictures of the Arkansas reception from a blog of someone who does know them.

On the Today Show the dresses looked purpleish, but here they look royal blue.

Does anyone know if the shows are being broadcast online? I've missed the last few.

I looked and couldn't find any. That's why I had to wait for the re-broadcasts.

OK, I just caught the re-run of this show today and all I can say is: Oh my! I thought maybe you were exaggerating a bit on the clothes... and then I saw those dresses...
