I get curious about things. Sometimes, just silly stuff, but I wanna know! Do you do this?
Well, tell us about what you were curious about, looked up on the Internet, and what you know now -- or do you really know it at all? It is the Internet, after all.
Also, add things you don't know -- maybe someone else does know.

Do people sneeze while asleep?
One source said:
Sneezing is a reflex, which means that it’s an uncontrollable physical response to an outside stimulus. When something, say a piece of dust or a strong odor, stimulates nerve endings in the lining of the nose, the stimulus travels to the central nervous system and is then routed back to the muscles of the face, throat and chest. Once stimulated, these muscles go to work and cause us to forcefully expel air from the mouth and nose. Or, in other words, we sneeze.
Because the nose lining tends to swell when we lie down, making it even more sensitive to sneeze-causing particles, it would seem that sneezing would be likely during sleep. However, since there is little airflow in most bedrooms at night, and little movement to stir up dust and other particles, the nose is not bombarded by as many foreign particles as it is during the day. Furthermore, the area of the brain responsible for the sneeze reflex relaxes while we sleep. So, even when a particle does touch the nose lining, the brain doesn’t notice, and we don’t sneeze.
But another source, where people answered for themselves, said that people do sneeze while asleep. Some of them were awakened by sneezing, and some remembered having sneezed.

Here's something I don't know and can't seem to find information about.
When I was a teen, I read a novel in which the peasants were mutilated in order to give them the look of having a perpetual smile. This novel was purported to be based upon history. Did someone really do this kind of mutilation? Can you find this in the Internet and show me?

Whenever I get curious about something, I go look it up on the internet. Some of my best finds is when I am searching for something and end up stumbling upon something else completely by accident.
One of those times was when searching on history for the Boston subway system and discovering that Cincinnati has a secret subway system that was built but never put into use at all, who knew?

Thank you for trying, AprilMtns. I remember so little of the book. I was in my very early teens when I read it, about 45 years or so ago. I read a lot of dark novels and poetry back then, but this savagery stood out in my mind.

Another thing I looked up which might be boring to most of you all is the history of Top 40 radio in New York City. I found out that 2 of the popular stations had subtle evolutions into what they became, but especially one long standing station which surprised me as well.

My wife and I have been wondering lately what the life cycle of those nasty critters are that swarm around ripening fruit (I have forgotten what they are called, and it isn't fruit flies). Go ahead and guess on both and test your knowledge of Hollywood trivia (or cheat and look it up online).

No kidding? Just last Friday we were commenting amongst ourselves at work how it seems only the northern cities have subways(?), and thought maybe Cincy would be the southern most city to have one, if at all. Well, now I know it sorta has one.

I actually read it just a few years back it was part of my English class, when I was getting ready to pass TOEFL, engl as a second language test for college
It is based on historical facts in France when poor orphans were mutilated on purpose and sold for circus, and even poor peasants wold sell their children for that.
Plot:A gothic fantasy about a man whose face has been torturously carved into a permanent grin, and his journey from circus freak to aristocrat, and back again.
Book is called The Laughing Man by Victor Hugo. Orig written in french. An Excellent piece.
(generally dont lounge, but saw this thread and wanted a one evening break from the theol folder zoo i usually live in  )

Do you dream in colour or black and white? (I suppose it depends on how rich you are). Also do you dream in stereo or just old style mono sound?

Most of the time when I look up something on the internet it's in response to a conversation between my husband and I, or the kids, or the whole family. For example, we were eating Reuben sandwiches the other day, and the kids wanted to know why they were called that. Erick said he thought they were German, I thought they had something to do with a Jewish guy, but I thought they were invented in New York, so we looked it up. It was really interesting.

I will look things up based on a conversation. OR sometimes I'm just reading my email and see something in the top google ticker thing and am inspired to look it up. Or I see a "how-to" page and read about it.
This morning I read about do's and don'ts on a resume.
Anybody look up how much time people waste looking things up on the internet?

Well I don't know what they have to do with anything Jewish or German, but I do know they got a lot to do with that miscellaneous can of sourkraut you got sitting on the pantry shelf that you don't know what to do with.

We were both partly right. According to one of the stories, it was a German immigrant who ran a restaurant in New York that had Jewish ties. The other main story was that it originated in Nebraska.
